Juco Reinforcement for UCLA’s Beleaguered Offensive Line: Cid Coming to Westwood
One of the biggest question marks for this upcoming football season is UCLA's offensive line. As gbruin loves repeating over and over "line wins games." Karl Dorrell left Bruins' offensive line in shambles. Rick Neuheisel brought in one of the best OL coaches in the game - Bob Palcic - to deal with that issue in Westwood. I will not rehash the details of Palcic's unit's struggle due to injuries and other issues in last 3 years..
We had hoped that the line would show some signs of cohesion during spring ball. In true UCLA fashion they were hit with injuries as Jeff Baca broke an ankle and Kai Maiava missed number of practices due to nagging injuries. Bruin coaches have been on the trail looking for an offensive lineman from the JC ranks. It looks like they may have landed a quality recruit. Brandon Huffman from BruinReportOnline.com is reporting that UCLA has picked up a commitment from Citrus College offensive guard Albert Cid (confirmed by Jon Gold).
Cid is a 6-4, 320lb guard, who also had offers from Arizona and Utah. It is not clear yet whether Cid has already been cleared by UCLA admissions. Keep that in mind because admissions has always been a tricky issue with Junior College recruits. Assuming he gets cleared he could help with depth issues this Fall.
He sounds excited in his interview with Gold:
JG: What about the football program made you pick UCLA?
AC: "I want UCLA to be a winning program again. I want to be a part of that. I really like head coach Rick Neuheisel. I trust him."JG: So tell me about yourself as a football player?
"I'm 6-3, 325 pounds. I'll pull, pass block, block a defensive tackle, a defensive player, in any way, any way I have to. One thing I like doing is blocking to the whistle. A lot of people make the block and watch the game. No, you block until the whistle. I just like to dominate people. I like the feeling when you dominate somebody and they know you're going to keep coming for four quarters and not one play."
Good thoughts there. May be Cid can contribute the same way Ryan Taylor and Eddie Williams?
Here was gbruin's analysis and depth chart before spring:

Baca is not going to be available right away next Fall. By the way, the chart above doesn't include the name of freshmen coming in this fall. If you want to refresh your memory read gbruin's entire analysis.
If Cid can make any contribution this Fall, it might give coaches the luxury to move Sheller to tackle spot? It would be great to see Cid come into UCLA and contribute this Fall.
Welcome to Westwood Cid.

Good get.
We’ve had some decent luck with JC lineman transfers… I hope he pans out too! Welcome Mr. Cid!
Welcome to Westwood, Cid!
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
Perhaps to the Arabs/Moors?
I’m not sure how they referred to him.

Good pickup.
Positive of having a couple kids transfer out, opens space for what we really need. Still crossingnmy fingers, hopefully this will be a breakout year for the boys up front.
Welcome to Westwood Cid, should be good times!
Love the pickup.
But that depth chart is ignoring the incoming freshmen, C 6-4.5/265 Jacob Brendel, T 6-6/280 Torian White, G 6-4.5/280 Ben Wysocki, T 6-8/255 Connor McDermott, and T 6-8/265 Will Oliver. Not saying these guys will break the two deep, but still need to keep them in mind.

I've read his post several times
and nowhere does he mention the incoming freshman, and they’re not referenced in the depth chart. Perhaps this is a reading comprehension fail, i’m fairly prone to those. But as far as I know, unless you’re referring to the linked post, “Line wins games” it’s not.

Huh?
Read the post again. He has this right under the depth chart:
Our incoming freshmen, Jake Brendel, Will Oliver, Torian White, Connor McDermott, and Ben Wysocki are all expected to redshirt for the 2011 season. White, you may recall, was the prized OL recruit who shocked the Bruins on Signing Day by committing to *$c on TV, and then changing his mind and recommitting to U.C.L.A. when his family realized where his heart truly was. Of these 5, Wysocki likely has the best chance of moving up to the playing squad in the fall.
Maybe you should mention this is in gbruin's analysis
and not below the depth chart on this page. I think that is the confusion.

LOL This is a communication breakdown.
For some reason I didn’t make it clear that in this post, there was no mention of the incoming freshmen, and they weren’t included in the chart (as they are likely redshirt candidates). Mea culpa.

Depth chart + incoming class + XSF
indicative of the great job Palcic and CRN have done addressing the issue of the big uglies. Vast improvement in both quality and depth on the line. I think the results of their effrts will manifest sooner rather than later. Throw in the amount of talent we have on the d line as well and I think think we are truly on track. I know it’s been a rough ride so far with CRN but I think he’s built up the right way. Now time to turn all of this into W’s.
Across The Face
The X-man isn't back until next season, sadly.
However, by then we will have some excellent depth at Oline. We’ll have lost Maiava, Sheller and Harris, but we have lots to replace them. Not to mention this year’s Oline class is extremely talented and deep.

Totally right Oswego
didn’t mean to imply the X-man for this year, only to include him as part of what CRN and Palcic have brought in as far as quality talent and size on the line. I totally anticipate Big Stan taking a starting spot this year too, I think he’s ready to put it together.
Across The Face
Agreed on Stan.
And I wish we could have Xman this year. We NEED him.
