UCLA Football Gets First 2012 Commitment
Steven Lakalaka from Punahou school in Hawaii has committed to the Bruins. Welcome Steven! Unfortunately it looks like this article is still behind the pay wall, but there is enough here to determine that Lakalaka will likely be coming in as an athlete.

Awesome name. I can imagine a rowdy student section chanting Laka-Laka-Laka-Laka when he scores.
Scout has him listed as a fullback.

a dream i have
is to not only have a rowdy student section chanting, but a sea of blue filling the Rose Bowl chanting Laka-Laka-Laka-Laka as well.
"Boom shaka-Laka-Laka!!!" sounds great.
He could get a theme song and become our Touchdown Tommy.

Across The Face

Gotta think big picture here guys.
Punahou is the best school on the Islands for producing football talent. The more inroads we make there the better.
To wit, I have done a bit of research on who else goes there, and we’ve offered a 3-star TE, Luke Kaumatule. 6-7, 230, offered by UT, Oregon, Washington, etc.
DeForest Buckner, a 3-star DE also plays for Punahou, though we haven’t offered.

Kahuku and St. Louis seem to field consistently better teams overall
But at least in the case of the former, I think academic concerns would be a big red flag.
Punahou
football really hasn’t been very strong since the class with Teo, Toma and Hilliard graduated. This year we do have some big guys and LakaLaka should do well provided he keeps healthy.
A shame too
but Hawaiian players are never slouches on D-1 football fields. Must be something in the water :)

Not sayin he is not a good pick up
Just that if he were remind me of Roby Toma, he better be linked to an elite level player. Which was the only reason we took a commitment from a player of his caliber in the first place.
