UCLA Bruins Saturday Open Thread - Golf Championships, Baseball And Softball

Trevor Bauer will be pitching his last game at Jackie Robinson Stadium this afternoon - pending the selection of NCAA Regional sites. (Photo Credit: Scott Wu)

This afternoon is shaping up to be a big day for the Bruins, with four games/matches awaiting us. Softball is already underway in Gainesville, with UCLA trailing Florida 4-2 in the 6th inning of this NCAA Regional semifinal; gametracker and audio available. UPDATE - after falling to Florida 4-2 this morning, UCLA will be playing the winner of Bethune-Cookman/Jacksonville this afternoon, 3pm Pacific, available online at ESPN3.com.

The Bruin Baseball team looks to bounce back from last night's 4-0 loss to Cal this afternoon @ JRS, 2pm first pitch. Trevor Bauer takes the mound for the Bruins for the penultimate home game of the season for UCLA, opposite Cal righthander Dixon Anderson (4-2, 4.29 ERA, 11 starts - 56.2IP - 33K/15BB). Anderson was a 6th round pick last spring by Baltimore as a draft-eligible sophomore, so he does have talent, even if his peripheral numbers are not what we are used to from our starters. As Ryan wrote yesterday, this looks to be a great game to go see, particularly for folks that like watching a pair of top pitchers duel. As always, Gametracker and live streaming audio is provided through UCLABruins.com, and Ryan's Baseball twitter will also share the action from JRS.

Both of the Golf teams are in action today. The Men's team is in the midst of the NCAA Western Regional, held in Rancho Santa Fe. After two rounds, the Bruins are in 2nd place, 4 strokes behind U$C. Bruin freshman Patrick Cantlay currently leads the individual leaderboard with a -8 after two rounds.

The big story of the day may end up coming from Texas, courtesy of the Women's Golf team. After completing their third round early this morning in Bryan, the Bruins enter the final round of the NCAA Championships with a 7 stroke lead over Purdue, and a 12 stroke lead over 3rd place Virginia. A Bruin also holds the individual lead, with Tiffany Lua leading Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora by 2 strokes (-4) entering the final round. The Bruins will begin final round play at 12:25pm Pacific time, with Lua part of hte final group beginning play at 1:09pm. The NCAA will be streaming live coverage from holes 16-17-18 starting at 1pm (with UCLA's groups hitting that stage of the course later in the afternoon). Team leaderboard and individual leaderboards via NCAA.com.

This is your open thread for all of today's action. Go Bruins!

Women's Golf is underway

Very early in the round – Bruins are even, Purdue is 1-under so far, UCLA holding a 6-stroke team lead over the Boilermakers.

Nice, Bruins sports overload today

slight OT: does anyone else have the NCAA.com Tshirt ad below the womens golf stream featuring that hideous mustard and ketchup T? I had to shrink my browser window to cover it (never mind the relevancy to recent marketing issues).

Also

I’m yelling “Noonan!” during every trogie’s backswing. That still works via internet, right?

It's just a great thing to do

With technology today, it’s cheap and easy, and a great way to expose the smaller/nonrev sports to the masses. I’m running back and forth between this computer stream and the Tour of California on the TV.

Ballgame!!

Bruins baseball wins 2-1!!

Bauer wins what is likely his final JRS appearance. Also, that’s his 7th complete game in a row. Amazing.

Yeah, more bats would have really helped this year. Thank goodness for Bauer.

We’ll have to hear from Ryan why Cal threw that fit after the final out. Poor little bears.

Purdue’s Gonzalez only needed to sink a 15-footer for a birdie, and couldn’t! So we’re still 2 strokes up.
