UCLA Bruins Sunday Open Thread - Baseball And NCAA Tournament Play

Win a Championship, get an extra day on top of BN. That's what they are playing for, right? (Photo Credit: Official Site)

Yesterday was a huge day in the Bruin Nation, with the Women's golf team bringing championship number 107 back to Westwood. No titles being contested today, but a pair of UCLA teams are playing for elimination in NCAA Tournament games, as well as another team beginning to wind down its season.

The Softball team split their two games yesterday, losing to Florida before routing Jacksonville to keep their season alive. Today's game under way about 20 minutes ago in Gainesville, an elimination game against Florida. If the Bruins win this early game, they will immediately play the Gators again for the Florida regional title, and advancement to next week's Super Regional round, Gametracker and live audio are available, and today's games will be streamed on ESPN3.com.

Women's Tennis will be playing Duke this afternoon in Palo Alto, in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. While a berth in the National Semifinals is big enough motivation, the Blue Devils were the ones to cut short UCLA's season during last year's Round of 16. Today's matches begin at noon on the Stanford campus, with live stats available here.

And finally, Baseball will be playing their final home game of the season this afternoon at 1pm against Cal. Adam Plutko takes the mound for UCLA, looking to win the final home series of the year for the Bruins. Cal will bring left-handed sophomore Justin Jones (7-4, 3.05) to the mound. Ryan's preview and recaps of the first two games of the series can be found here. As usual, Gametracker and a Live Audio stream is available, as is Ryan's baseball twitter.

This is your open thread for today's games. Go Bruins!

According to these announcers

basically every player on our team is or has been hurt this season. That would explain a record below what we expected. Sucks that it’s something like injuries, which you wan’t do anything about.

Step away for just a few minutes and shit just falls apart...

Florida has put 6 runs on the board in the first inning, and there’s still just 1 out.

And now it is 9-0 Florida

Is it possible to get mercy ruled in the 1st inning? We might just find out.

Oh boy. Now...

our #6-seeded women’s tennis team will face off against… #2 seed Florida, who crushed #7 seed Miami 4-1 earlier today. Match will start at 4pm tomorrow.

Oh, and if we can also upset Florida...

in women’s tennis, then #1 Stanford awaits in the wings. Why are they #1? Well, Stanford is the only UNDEFEATED team in the country, at 26-0 (soon to be 27-0 in a few minutes after disposing of #8 Georgia). They’ve beaten us 5-2 and 6-1 earlier this season already. It’s only going to get harder from here on out.

But first things first, Florida. We haven’t faced them this year. We did actually beat them the last two seasons at the ITA National Team Indoors up in Madison, Wisconsin. But this year’s Florida squad is very young, with no seniors on the squad at all, and two Top-100 freshmen in their top 6 singles. And Florida’s top player is just a sophomore, Allie Will. She’s the #7-ranked singles player in the country, and has teamed up with freshman Alex Cercone to become the #2-ranked doubles tandem in the country. Florida also has the #17-ranked singles player in Lauren Embree.

As a comparison, our highest-ranked singles player is Noelle Hickey, at #41. Our top doubles tandem is ranked #23. Here’s what should be the matchups tomorrow, barring any last-minute switches, with the players’ national ranking included if they’re ranked.

Doubles
1. #23 Dolehide/Remnyse (UCLA) vs. #2 Cercone/Will (Florida)
2. #24 Hickey/Jones (UCLA) vs. #45 Embree/Oyen (Florida)
3. Johansson/Montez (UCLA) vs. Janowicz/Mather (Florida)

Singles
1. #57 McCall Jones (UCLA) vs. #7 Allie Will (Florida)
2. #41 Noelle Hickey (UCLA) vs. #17 Lauren Embree (Florida)
3. #76 Andrea Remynse (UCLA) vs. #91 Sofie Oyen (Florida)
4. #97 Pamela Montez (UCLA) vs. #42 Joanna Mather (Florida)
5. #77 Courtney Dolehide (UCLA) vs. #54 Alex Cercone (Florida)
6. Maya Johansson (UCLA) vs. Caroline Hitimana (Florida)

So based on the rankings, Florida is already favored in 4 of the 6 singles matches. If we can beat Florida, this WILL be a pretty major upset. Go Bruins!!!

Great preview, BruinKid

Thanks! You should FanPost this so everyone can see what our ladies are up against tomorrow. Dang, it sure would be nice to take Florida out once and for all one of these days.

Baseball within 1 game of 1st place in Pac 10

I’m sure Ryan will break it all down for us in his recap, but by my calculations, we are 1 game behind Oreg. St. and tied in 2nd place with ASU…

we play 3 games at ASU next week
OSU plays 3 at Oregon

As up and down as a season as it has been, it would be especially gratifying to win the final Pac 10 season (wait, will Colo and Utah field Pac 12 baseball teams?? I think it’s only a club sport at Colo and the Utes play teams like Salt Lake City Bees and Utah Valley).

I’m not sure how it works with conference champs vis-a-vis RPI rating, but I’m hoping we can steal the conference title and host the regionals + super regionals … but that might be a stretch.
