UCLA Baseball Regional v. USF Gameday Thread
The Bruins managed to stave off elimination by beating Fresno State, in large part due to the excellent pitching of national pitcher of the year Trevor Bauer. UCLA now faces USF again, after initially losing to the Dons 3-0 in the opening game, in another elimination game. Freshman stalwart Adam Plutko takes the hill for the Bruins in another must-win game. Win and the season stays alive, at least for another few hours. Lose and it ends in Los Angeles rather than Omaha for this year's Bruins squad.
Game is underway (start time at 2 p.m. PST) and you can watch it online or follow on GameTracker. Also, Ryan's UCLA baseball Twitter will have his updates, observations, and notes as the game unfolds.
If the Bruins win, they'll face UC Irvine tonight at JRS at 6 p.m. PST.
This is your NCAA baseball regional open thread.

When the hell do they ever call that?
Not a good faith attempt to get out of the way of the HBP? BS.
You don't have to get out of the way if the pitch is clearly within the batter's box
“If the batter freezes and is hit by a pitch that is clearly inside the vertical lines of the batter’s box, the ball is dead and the batter is awarded first base.”
http://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4183-2011-2012-baseball-rules-2-year-publication.aspx
And that pitch was clearly in the batter's box
I don’t think that rule has ever been called since Little League.
Gelalich 2-out RBI double
4-0 UCLA, still top 7th.
Florida's six outs away from locking up the first spot in the Super Regionals.
Up 11-1 on Miami in the 8th.
TCU was the first #1 seed to be eliminated.
Either #3 Dallas Baptist or #4 Oral Roberts will be in the Super Regionals.
In our paired regional, Virginia is up 5-0 in the top 4th.
If they win, the winner of our regional heads to Charlottesville next weekend.
Plutko has a real gem going.
1-hit, zero-run baseball through 7 is VERY impressive for a true Freshman in his first post-season game in his college career. We are looking at our Friday ace for the next 2 seasons.
Any chance he might leave after this season?

You can't leave early from a 4-year college like you can in basketball
You have to be 3 years removed from HS graduation or be less than 6 weeks from your 21st birthday on draft day. Plutko is here for 2 more years.
The age exception is why TCU sophomore P Matt Purke is eligible for this year's draft.
He turns 21 in mid-July.
And closer to home
Oregon State catcher Andrew Susac is a draft-eligible sophomore too.
What happened to him this year?
I thought, after last year, he’d be 1st round material for sure
Injury.
He only came back a couple weeks ago.
I’ve seen projections with him going in the late 1st/supplemental round.
He pitched 5 IP yesterday in TCU's loss to Dallas Baptist.
Gave up only 2 hits and 2 ER; got a no-decision.
His velocity is up now
But nowhere near as good as last year. Not top 3 pick material when you’re 88-92. He does have tons of leverage since he can easily return for his junior year.
Might be a better option if he comes back strong
He’d be looking at a bigger bonus at the top of the 2012 draft.
He can't leave until after his junior year.
If you choose to play in college, you aren’t draft-eligible for three years.
best rule in college athletics
I wish the NCAA would stand up to the NBA and insist on this for basketball.
Fielding error on Espy
Runners at 1st and 2nd, 2 outs in the 8th. Top of the order now coming up for USF.
1 pitch and the side is retired
4-0 after 8.
Plutko was dynamite – 7.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K,
Final in Gainesville
Florida beats Miami 11-4 and is the first team to reach the super regional
How far is that from DC?
Actually going to be in DC Thurs-Sunday
From the district, about 2.5 hours
Longer if you are traveling to/from during the commute (the beltway + I-66 is horrible). Actually a pretty nice, scenic drive once you are off the interstate.

4-3 ground out
The runners advance to 2nd and 3rd but now there’s an out.
Another 4-3 ground out
Runner from third scores and the other runner advances to 3rd. 2 outs though and UCLA leads 4-1.
4 pitch walk
Runners at the corners, 2 outs and the tying run is up at the plate.
Who will pitch next?
Who will pitch our game tonight? If needed, who would start on Monday?
GO BRUINS.
