UCLA Baseball Regional v. UC Irvine Gameday Thread

Photo

Earlier this afternoon, the Bruins eliminated the USF Dons, in large part due to an outstanding pitching performance from sensational freshman Adam Plutko.  Plutko, making his first college post-season start, did not disappoint, throwing a one-hit gem for 7.2 innings, with 6 strikeouts and just 2 walks.  After a little bit of a threat by the Dons late in the game, the Bruins closed out USF by a final score of 4-1.

With one win down today, the Bruins move on to play the UC Irvine Anteaters.  First pitch is expected at 6 p.m. PST and once again you can watch the game online or keep tabs via GameTracker or Ryan's UCLA baseball Twitter.  With the Bruins' regular starters (Cole, Bauer, and Plutko) expended, Coach John Savage is expected to hand the ball to freshman Zack Weiss.

Once again, the Bruins have to win to extend their season and give themselves a shot at returning to Omaha.

This is your double-dose elimination NCAA regional baseball thread.

And now has to beat Baylor twice to advance.

Wow, Cal eliminated Rice

First top-8 seed out. Neither number 1 seed in that pair reached even the regional finals

If Cal wins and ORU wins...

Cal will be hosting a 3-4 matchup next week

by UCLA Band ' on Jun 5, 2011 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Can Cal even host a super-regional?

I have walked by their field quite often…calling it a primitive dump would be a complement. If JRS could not host the NCAA’s until a couple of years ago, I can’t imagine the NCAA letting Cal hold one.

That's a good question.

I wonder how DBU and ORU’s facilities are.

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh boy...I'm going to admit

I don’t watch a whole lot of college baseball, and therefore, I do not know how the tournament works. Can someone explain to me how is it that UCLA has to play 2 teams in 1 day? I didn’t know you were allowed to do that in ANY sport o.O

by notaznguy on Jun 5, 2011 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

Double elimination format

Both teams this morning had lost a game already and were playing to move on…

We won the right to play UCI (who has not lost so far) tonight.

If we win tonight, it forces another game tomorrow vs UCI again (winner goes on to the Super Regional, loser goes home).

by Go Bruinz on Jun 5, 2011 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Four teams per regional.

- Double elimination, meaning two losses in a round = season over.
- First round: 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3.
- Winners of those games play each other. Losers play each other—loser goes home, winner plays the loser of the winners game (loser of that also goes home).
- The 2-0 team gets whichever team is left and only has to win once to advance. The 1-loss team must beat the 2-0 team twice to advance.

by Go Bruinz on Jun 5, 2011 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

Man do we have some pitchers!!!!

1-4, Probably not a better team in the NCAA. We need some hitters though, power and situational. Too MANY LOB.

by BruinFaithful on Jun 5, 2011 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

Situational fluctuates.

We just need guys who can hit—for average and for power.

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I get that, but that fluctuates and is usually measured by small samples.

Overall, we just aren’t a very good offensive team.

In the long run, better overall hitters hit better situationally. It’s not like a .250 hitter magically becomes an All-American because there’s a runner on 2nd base.

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Understood.

But what are we hitting with runners in scoring position? It’s probably worse than .250 and definitely worse than our overall team average. That’s my point.

by BruinFaithful on Jun 5, 2011 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

In this game? Absolutely.

What I’m saying though is that it isn’t like you can just go out and recruit players who are “situational” hitters. We just don’t have a good hitting team overall, so we are going to be prone to a lot of games where we don’t execute offensively. (Our team’s AVG/OBP/SLG splits are .263/.353/.383. Unremarkable to say the least.)

I suppose what I’m getting at is that the “unclutch” label has been misused over and over again by the media relating to various MLB players throughout the years, but over the long haul the data doesn’t back up that players hit significantly different in certain situations that they do on aggregate.

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

There was actually an interesting article in Baseball Prospectus

about how left handed batters often are “clutch” simply because teams can’t play a shift on them with runners on base. I’ve never seen a shift in college, or at least it’s a lot less common, so it doesn’t really apply here.

KC at #5 could be interesting for Trevor

Royals have a killer core group of young MLB/MLB ready players and are looking to take a pitcher near-mlb ready (either Bauer or Hultzen from UVa, if either are avaialble).

No Beacom?

No outs by Vander Tuig in his second appearance of the day – was Beacom unavailable for some reason?

by jaffa on Jun 5, 2011 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Beacom is a LHP

I imagine Savage wanted the RHP to face the right-handed bats.

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I suppose

I’d rather have the fresh guy though, even without the platoon advantage. He pitched 30 innings on the year too, not exactly a LOOGY.

by jaffa on Jun 5, 2011 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

All three hitters he faced were right-handed batters.

I don’t blame the decision; it just didn’t work out. (Given his resume, I think Savage is beyond reproach when it comes to pitching decisions.)

by bruinhoya on Jun 5, 2011 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Glad we won the Pac-10 at least

I’m disappointed, but I’m still glad we won the conference title outright. I had preseason expectations of going to another CWS, especially since we still had Bauer and Cole, but I kinda knew right away from the beginning that something was wrong with this team when we lost our first few games that we shouldn’t have lost early in the season.

I’m gonna miss our ace pitchers =( We may never see anything or anyone like Trevor Bauer for awhile.

by notaznguy on Jun 5, 2011 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

Tough loss

I was there and was hoping we pull it off, especially with the UCI caveman in the stands yelling the whole game lol.

I noticed John was having some sort of discussion with Cole and Bauer in the Top 8. I am making the assumption he was asking if both of them can throw a inning or something. Looked like Cole was stretching in the pen and being ready when called upon.

Bottom 9 comes around and Weiss gets the hook. There’s Cole near the dugout entrance with a ball and glove at the ready. He seems like he was trying to get John notice him like “Hey skip, I can throw”. A minute later, I guess John told him now and from my angle, Cole just flips his glove and ball in the pen and stomps into the dugout pretty peed off.

Ahh..so many “what ifs” in the game of baseball. Could Cole on 2 days rest, go a inning and shut down UCI? Was it a smart decision by John, sending Weiss out to the 9th as he was already nearing 120 pitches? Was Vander Tuig the answer as he was so-so in the early game? I hate what ifs..DAMN IT LOL.

by BruinBaseball14 on Jun 5, 2011 10:10 PM PDT reply actions

I'm going to miss how much Cole cares

Good luck in the MLB, boys. You will be missed and certainly not forgotten.

by saudiboy on Jun 5, 2011 11:58 PM PDT reply actions

Starting rotation for next season

1. Plutko
2. Weiss
3. ?
4. ?

This is going to be hard losing Cole and Bauer.

Two things I am disappointed with as now its the off season.

1. Our offense was pretty much intact from last year. This year was more of a “how to strand runners on base” clinic..ugh. Savage and Vanderhook needs to get this shipped righted next season.

2. Our bullpen was a huge problem and lack of experience. Only reliever with the most experience was Beacom. Bullpen needs to be stronger next year. Vander Tuig needs to be more aggressive in the closer role (he has upside). He was for sure no Dan Klein this year (I miss Dan pitching for us).

3. Only small consolation was the PAC 10 title. I think everyone is more disappointed they ended their post season early and on a sour note.

by BruinBaseball14 on Jun 6, 2011 12:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Its an option

That John will most likely experiment with. Only concern is that he was a starter his junior year in HS. Had a unknown arm injury which put him on the shelf all of his senior year in HS. Another option is throwing Scott Griggs out there as a Sunday or Tuesday guy.

by BruinBaseball14 on Jun 6, 2011 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

If feels as if we're heading into the doldrums

This year, Pac 10 Championship notwithstanding, was a missed opportunity to build upon last year.

We’re going to lack pitching depth and the offense will be what it was. We’re not aggressive at the plate, and there’s simply no excuse for that.

It’s hard to understand what Savage is thinking sometimes, but he knows better than I.
