This is great!
When I saw Bradley was let go a couple days ago, I hoped Klinsmann would be the replacement. Great move, and hopefully what we need to get over the hump.

Wow
That was the first name that popped into my head when I heard that Bradley was fired. Now about finding an elite striker…

Oh boy
I sense a lot of “WTF are you guys doing?” coming at practice…interesting to see how he coaches players who are half the size of those he’s used to!
Should be awesome!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
If they learn to play D the right way
No reason they can’t do it. Definitely have the speed upfront and the goal scorers. Midfield could be better but it’s not the weakest link IMO.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
half the size?
I would think he’d be more surprised at the relative lack of technical fundamentals compared with coaching the German national side or any of his European club experience as a player.
Ugh
I am not happy about this at all. I hope I’m wrong, but I see this going absolutely horribly.

totally agree with you
also, won’t be surprised if he resigns or is fired before 2014.
2 coaching gigs spanning 3 years, neither ended well.
However, I will say on the positive side that he has tried to ‘shake things up’ at both previous jobs, which may be a useful thing for Team USA even if he flames out in a couple of years.
What?
Damn! Coming from you, Ryan, that just totally pooped on my party. Sometime (soon) you’ll have to explain this in detail.

I disagree with Ryan
And I follow this game closely as well. I was more than impressed with what JK did with Germany back in 2004. I think bringing in someone like him will help usher in much needed culture change in how we have been playing this game at the national level. It also sends a clear signal on how serious we are about this game. Is he going to be lights out? We will see but there are reasons to be excited.
As always I agree with Nestor
Okay, not always but I think this is a very good choice. JK style of soccer is much needed in the US as well. I am excited for the team, the players and the country.
That's where I was, DC and N
I think the program needs someone like this. And even if things go badly, are we really any worse off? But both Ryan and N know the national program much better than I do, so it will be interesting to watch how this goes.

How can Ryan and I disagree?
When we are the same person?
I think concerns about Klinsman are valid. It was indeed his assistant coach Loew who was focusing on the Xs and Os during Germany’s World Cup appearance. But the fact is Lowe did it under Klinsmann. He managed that program, and injected life into a program that had been sleepwalking for a while. Germany finished 3rd in that World Cup but their loss to eventual WC Italy was a heart-breaker.
I think it will be very interesting to see what kind of personnel Klinsmann assembles around USSF. For the time being though I think there are reasons to be excited.
That is one of the most intriguing aspects of Klinsmann
He got rid of the old gaurd at Germany and went for a large number of young guys. It was bold move that almost won the championship. Will he do the same thing for the US? I am excited.
Plus, unlike Bora, Klinsmann is living in the US and has loyalties here.
That's exactly the point
he injected life into it. But that only works when you got full support of the federation. I’m sure he’ll come up with a good concept not only including the men’s team. Let him do his work, let him get the staff he requires and give him time and he’ll do good things for soccer in America. I guess it’s a lot easier for him to work in the US cause soccer is still kinda young sport so he doesn’t have to deal with some old experts who are questioning his concepts.
It's going to be interesting to see who he puts on his staff
He’s pretty tactically inept so he’s going to need another Jogi Low to handle that. Who he gets to be on his staff is going to be absolutely critical.
As for what he brought to Germany, a lot of that were American ideas with regards to fitness and training. They’re things we already do so he’s not bringing that with him. He also did a lot to change their youth system there, but we’ve just implemented a new youth system that was developed in conjunction with the Bundesliga and includes a lot of the stuff Klinsmann introduced there.
I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think Klinsmann’s strengths fit what we need right now and his weaknesses could be crippling. Most scary though is that in the last five years Sunil Gulati has only spoken to two people about the job, Bradley and Klinsmann. There are so many more available, better managers out there that could have been approaches in 2006, last year and again now.

Now he just needs to find
a good assistant coach who knows a thing or two about x’s and o’s cause Klinsmann is everything except a good coach in a classic way. Even when he was coaching Germany the real coach was always Loew. Klinsmann is more of a motivator.
I like it
Klinsmann is a legend. He knows what he is looking for in championship squad. He obviously knows what it takes in terms of conditioning and tactics. I think this a very good move.
