Sid Hartman and his hazy facts

Long time Star Tribune writer Sid Hartman is on video today with a hazy recollection of UCLA athletes being paid. Sid is a fixture in Twin Cities sports, and has the most senority of all the local sports reporters. Although, he is treated as a joke by other sports writers who refer to him as "Grampaw Sports" and question his legion of "Close personal friends" in the sporting world.

SidCast: College payoffs nothing new Sid Hartman recalls stories where college athletes were paid off. Sid's also got some parting words of wisdom for Judd Zulgad.

In this video, which is led on the Star Tribune site with a still picture of Bill Walton, Sid hazily recollects how UCLA athletes were paid.

He gives a number of dubious statements:

  • Sam Gilbert was a car dealer
  • A guard from Minnesota (whose name escapes Sid) got a new Pontiac (remembers the make) from Sam Gilbert after [J.D.] Morgan brought him out there.
  • Calls into question that "Lew Alcindor ... Bill Walton ... all those guys from all over the country went to UCLA because they loved it?" Implying they went there because they were paid.
  • John {Wooden] (who he loved) quit after he found all this out
