NOT (really) Naming a Starter at QB!
So camp wrapped up on Saturday and CRN still hasn't named a starter at QB. With about 10 days til the season opener at Houston it's still anyone's guess as to who will take the first snap. Nestor's recent post outlined strong arguments for both Prince and Brehaut to be our #1 QB. But after reading those arguments and hearing Neuheisal repeat ad nauseum "the competition makes them both better" I am beginning to think that there's no reason to name a definitive starter -- at least not in any long-term, the-other-guy-can-relax sort of way.
If there are really good reasons why either should start AND the competition is forcing them both to up their game, why not keep the competition going til one of them proves it ON THE FIELD, in a game? Realistically, if the guy who is initially named the starter struggles, we're going to want to see what the other guy can do. They are too close overall and have differing strengths. Even the most educated guess could be the wrong one.
So my vote is for CRN to kind-of name a starter for Houston. In as much as we need one guy to take the first snap, a starter should be named. Just like we started camp. CRN said, well, Prince will take the first snap. That doesn't mean he will take every snap with the first team, Richard Brehaut has earned a shot too. And I still think the same argument could be made: I think that both Prince and Brehaut deserve a shot to show what they can do on the field, in a game. When a competition is this close for this long, it is in the team's best interest to see who can perform the best when the bright lights are on (or in the scorching Texas midday sun).
I know there are those of you that think by not choosing a starter we are handicapping both, so let me be clear -- I am NOT saying we shouldn't pick a "starter" to get more reps and prepare for Houston. I am just saying they should both continue to prepare like they are going to play and if the first guy isn't getting the job done, say for the whole first half, maybe the other guy should get a shot to see if he can do better.
If any of you guys have any thoughts on the matter, I'd love to hear them!

Good thoughts
I don’t feel that Neuheuisel needs to hurry up and name the starter as well. Plus never hurts to keep Houston guessing.

My only concern
is for the starter to get enough reps with the 1s. Other than that, always good to keep’em guessing.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Ditto
we need to choose a starter now. At this point, reps > competition, at least imo.
