"Best team in 9 years"

James Washington dropped in on the UCLA Alumni Band at our annual (whether we need it or not) rehearsal on Saturday and spoke about this year's football team.

He said that this was the best team in 9 years because there was actually competition for each position - something that has been lacking due to no depth in the depth chart and not enough quality athletes.  And he reinforced that everyone really is being held accountable for their individual results on the field - something that hadn't happened consistently in prior years.

James, while liking both QB;s, gave the edge to Prince because he has "faster feet."  That said, he noted that Brethaut throws a great ball and has had a great pre-season camp.  And his smile lit up the room when speaking about the potential in Brett Hundley.  He underscored that he doesn't know who CRN's pick will be for QB as and would all know when Rick announces his choice.

Star-divide

He really likes the whole defensive mind set and thinks that the Trecy approach is being well received by the players and that the defense is an attacking, not passive, group (thank goodness!).

As excited as he was, James noted that the rebuilding process begun after the Dorrell era has been painful and far more difficult than anyone imagined.  That said, he clearly thinks that the Bruins will have some success this year.  I certainly hope so!

Many of the UCLA

beat writers, people who have been covering the program for a long time, have said that this is the best team in quite some time. I hope it plays out on the field.

Read something that

made me smh the other day. I think it was from a beat reporter…he said something about how during the Dorrell years a few of the beat reporters would sit in the stands and count the guys who shouldn’t be on a Pac-10 roster. He said they’d get somewhere in the 40’s. He also said that this year, they had a tough time getting to 5 and that a couple were reaches..that’s a huge difference in talent gap. Can’t remember where I read it since I look at just about every source there is…although Bruins Nation and Bruin Report Online are my two favorite sources.

It was BRO

Good write up by Tracy Pearson.

yup

Tracy is almost crazy optimistic right now. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. But he did call our record just right last year, so maybe he sees something.

I think last year was the first time he missed ...

Otherwise, he has been really accurate through his whole career when it comes to laying out pre-season predictions. Perhaps that goes to show what an aberration last year was? I hope so.

Did I blow it?

I thought he predicted a losing season for us. I could easily be misremembering it though.

Of course it could be that I have forgotten everything about last year, which would be a really good thing (except for that being doomed to repeat it stuff).

IIRC

I think Tracy picked UCLA to get to about 7 wins 2010. I think his predictions were generally on the money. I mean who in the world could foresee us losing to Washington in Seattle. We should have throttled the banged up Huskies in Seattle. If we had won that game, I think the dynamic heading into ASU and Southern Cal, with a bowl game on the line would have been very different.

He picked 7 wins

before all the injuries. That was definitely doable.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

He even got it scary right

on bball predictions. Guessed something like 20+ straight games correct……even the Montana loss.

Him calling the Montana loss

Is pretty damn impressive. I know they were a dangerous or underrated team last year, but even now I can’t believe it happened.

Yeah he picked every game right until the last two weeks

He had us losing to AZ (which we won spectacularly) and both Washington games (we beat WSU) on the road. So he was perfect until the last two weeks of the season, really good for a preseason pick.

That is amazing

kinda makes me want to start placing on bets on every game he posts a prediction for…

I like this
everyone really is being held accountable for their individual results on the field – something that hadn’t happened consistently in prior years.

Of course, I want to know why this wasn’t done previously. But regardless, it’s about time.

For what it's worth

On Sportscenter’s Pac-12 preview segment last night, Herbstreit said UCLA is the team with the most to prove, but also the team he predicted to represent the south in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

But oh do I hope he’s right!

Like waiting for Christmas

I can hardly stand it, kick off already! Attending practices has been like previewing Christmas gifts but Mom and Dad won’t let on to what they’re really going to get you. If these guys play to their potential and stay within the game plan this could be one hell of an opening weekend! Saturday can’t come soon enough!!!
