Rose Bowl Renovation - New Scoreboard / Video Replay Board

As you know, the Rose Bowl is going through extensive renovation. With Saturday being the first home game since the renovation started we were able to see some of the progress. Temporary scaffolding has been erected where the press box / suites are being extended and other areas are being worked on. The most visible improvement is the replacement of the old scoreboard and replay board.

The Tee Vee is clearly better but . . .

But overall the north end system is a big drop off from the old system.

The old system provided clock, down, yards to go and score info. Now the only thing you can see at the north end is the tee vee with a subtle ad for a paint company on the screen. The north end provides no clock, down, yards to go and score info.

I was seated in the alumni section. In order to see, for example, how many yards to go for a first down, I had to turn around and look at a scoreboard on the east side next to the flagpole. Or I could look at the south end scoreboard.

The public address announcer generally does not announce time, down and yards to go information and for good reason, that stuff is on two scoreboards. The problem is that depending where you are seated, you have to turn around or in an entirely different direction to get what is key information.

Agree, that's was the reason to add the east score.

The old ones also showed who had the ball. I was looking for that football next to the team.

The other thing that was bad was they showing the scores of other games.

How can you read all of them before they take them off. They show a different one on each of the ad-boards.

That's not the only change though

the new “retro” scoreboard on the opposite side is absolutely terrible. It’s nearly unreadable as many elements on it are either too small, or the lights of the numbers are so bright you can’t read what the labels as they’re not lit up. It’s the worst scoreboard I’ve ever seen.

Oh, and the UCLA-script on it is so small that while it may have been written in blue and gold, from far away it looked like raider-colors. I hate it.

You're right about those labels for the south side board

It’s like they didn’t think about night games. You see a bunch of numbers and have to guess what they relate to.

I 2nd that

They need to add lights to the ‘retro’ board to make it useful for the night games.

Other than the great looking new tee vee

The new south and north boards fail the eye test.

And to think this goofiness occurs in connection with a school you have to be really smart to get into.

Seems like there ought to be some sort of simple scoreboard board across the top of the TV

Low tech, but where clock, down, and distance can be seen easily. Like this.

(I can offer no follow up on the fate of Derek and Sharaine)

Well let's do a couple of geographic computations here

If Derek lives in Hawaii (which he must as he is Hawaii’s biggest Bronco fan) and Sharaine is in Denver (and you kinda think she is, after all she had to be at the game to read the scoreboard message unless of course Derek asked Dr. gbruin to take the pic and publish it on BN with the expectation that Sharaine is a BN aficionado so she would see it on the Net rather than at the game and I am going to put that possibility in the “not too likely” column) their "relationship" must be characterized as like really long distance which does not appear to auger well for potential marital bliss.

I was disappointed with the new reply screen

Having been to Tennessee and Texas the past couple of seasons and the crapiseum for the Minnesota-$C game this year, our screen pales in comparison. Its definitely an improvement over the old one, but not nearly as nice as what some of the premier stadiums (and even the crapiseum) currently have. I wish they would have kicked in a bit more for the renovation and gone with something that could have rivaled those.

And yeah, I like the throwback feel they were going for with the south side scoreboard, but the execution completely failed.

Here's another video of the new expanded HD video scoreboard.

I was actually pretty impressed with the new screen (view from section 16). They showed this clip before the game and it pumped me up… like I said, it was BEFORE the game.

Here’s the clip.

That clip gave me goose bumps

There is glory in this program…these kids and this coach need to make their own glory, not “return” us to glory.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Anybody have a clip of the Jimmy Johnson interview?

I missed it and was wondering what he said about his brother.
