With all the discussion recently about how CRN needs to be more aggressive, I thought this was a really interesting read that brought up some great points regarding punting and coaching risk/reward.

An interesting update

I brought up an earlier article about the same guy from a little while back in the discussion on when to go for it on 4th down kicked off by bluebland.

Two new things struck me in this article. Amid all the other things about pretty much always going for it on 4th down, and always onside kicking – which you would call ‘hyperaggressive’ strategies – it is interesting that the same rational approach also suggests to him that you should never attempt to return a punt, because the risk of a turnover is a bigger potential risk than the reward of the incremental yards – a potentially ‘hyperconservative’ strategy. He has done his analysis and found that the ‘status quo’ approach may sometimes err on the side of not risky enough, and sometimes err on the side of being too risky.

And, the other thing – I would love Tresey to call an 11-man rush just once as a defensive ‘trick play’ :-)

This is what I was thinking too

Rather than rely solely on gimmicks or solely on traditional “conservative” thinking, he bases his strategy on research and data he’s found and he’s okay without necessarily having to be one or the other.

In regards to how this would translate into the college game, it seems as though a lot of his strategies are intended to demoralize and throw off the opponent mentally. Maybe it’s because the author of the article used the quote where the coach talks about how demoralizing it is to lose an onside kick, but I feel like a large part of his strategy isn’t the playbook as it is getting into the opponent’s head. While strategies like an 11 man blitz works well against a high school qb (I sure know I would lose my composure), when facing a more disciplined college offense the results may be different.

Another note I wanted to make is that my initial reaction to the article is that teams that rely on unconvention tend to come from smaller, and assumedly less physically gifted teams. The article notes how the (Pulansky) Bruins have a student body 5 times smaller than their opponent. The other team that comes to my mind is Boise State (though they have their own share of troubles now), who beat bigger, faster teams using unconventional plays. However you look at a team like Oregon, who runs an unconventional offense as well, and they’re stacked with athletes. And I was just listening to some radio analysis on the Patriots offense, which has evolved into a somewhat unconventional spread as a result of having a Tom Brady who can kill you with those short passes.

I feel like our (UCLA)Bruins falls somewhere in between. We don’t have a lights out passing or running quarterback, and we don’t have a Maurice Jones-Drew taking it the distance. What we do have is a core of experienced players who have the size and speed to match-up with anybody we play. As a fan I love to see more unconventional strategies, but in order for this to work we need to play soundly within our base offense/defense. Otherwise any sort of wrinkle we put in runs a large risk of failing badly. I wonder if this is what Rick sees and this is why he continues his conservative play calling.

With that said, at the point we’re barely beating SJSU, it’s time we take some risks. I’m all for creativity, and I’m on the same boat as everyone else who’s hoping that we kept our playbook close to the chest against SJSU to save it for Texas. Our team has the athletes to make things happen, we just need to make sure we utilize them.

The two biggest wins we ever had (in my opinion) were due to onsides kicks

In 65, after we cut the lead to 16-14, we did an onsides kick, then Beban threw a TD pass to Altenberg on the old “H-Post-H” play and we won 20-16 over just$c*. Then in the Rose Bowl against MSU, who had wiped us out earlier in the year, after we scored a TD (which we weren’t expected to do), Coach Prothro called for an onsides kick which we recovered, and went on to score another TD and take a 14-0 lead, in a game we eventually won 14-12 when 165 lb defensive back Bob Stiles stoped 235 lb fullback Bob Apisa at the goal line on a two point conversion attempt.

So I’m all for the onsides kick.

And so is Brandon Brazeal (sp?) who ran back two for TDs against Northwestern in CTS’s finest hour bowl win.

Yeah I saw this

It’s an interesting read. I was hoping someone would fanpost it and give it the write-up it deserved. Thanks qazplm3.

If you watch the video, there are some very interesting plays in there. I like how the receiver catches a pass and immediately plants himself for the lateral. It’s beautiful execution.

Didn't really give it a write-up

I’m really not all that confident my analysis of anything can stand up to all the great contributions of everyone in this community. But maybe I will get there someday :-)

Just go for it.

It’s all a continual process of getting there for everyone. One of my first fanposts was on some talking head’s projected NBA draft board that had Russell Westbrook as a lottery pick, when it was still early in his sophomore year. BN roundly destroyed me for taking seriously the early-season draft projections, which everyone said were garbage. I took a good beating on that one.

There is nothing to fear

You don’t need more than 75 words to start a fanpost. This is a great article and of course completely relevant to the discussion going on here at BN. Plus note the name of this team.

Exactly the sort of ballsy, fearless scheming

that our team needs desperately. When will it happen?

Not exactly new hat

Every xbox owner already knows and employs this strategy.

What's the unlock code for the 11 man rush?
