BN Gameday: Oregon State Pre-Game Thread

A do-or-die game for Jet Ski and the Bruins this afternoon. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

The kickoff against the Beavers is scheduled for 12:30 pm PST. Our game thread is going up around 12:15 pm PST. So we have another Saturday morning to take in some other football action while getting ready for the Bruins (while hanging out with Ms. Mary and Mimosas).

In early action today notable games include Notre Dame's visit to Pittsburgh, which I guess is now ACC "country." UNC Tar Heels are taking on Georgia Tech, which could be interesting. It is always fun to watch Paul Johnson's offense. George is taking on Ole Miss in the SEC edition of the "Hot Seat Bowl." The game between Temple Owls and Maryland could also be worth keeping an eye on.

If you haven't had a chance, take a look at our BN pick'em thread here.  You can also check out our Oregon State previews here and here

So if you are watching other games today, share your quick takes, observations or pre-game nervous musings, here is our open thread. Have fun.

GO BRUINS.

Anyone know what channel it’s on in norcal? i have crappy comcast…

by aggiemd on Sep 24, 2011 9:29 AM PDT reply actions

I am getting it in usual Fox Sports West channel

Which comes in my Comcast package here in DC.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 9:31 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I usually get it on the comcast sports network, but it’s listing cal v washington at that time..

by aggiemd on Sep 24, 2011 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Cal game is on regular Comcast network. If you have the Fox college sports package you should get our game on channel designated for the West.

I'll be at the game today

Road tripping to Corvallis. If Rick doesn’t start Brehaut I’m running onto the field, tackling him, and serving the mandatory jail time.

Also, since I’m watching them now: does any college football team make more dumb mistakes at bad times than Notre Dame?

ND has been interesting

This is much hyped Brian Kelly’s second season. What is interesting about the game is how Pitt D is bringing pressure showing many different looks.

You won’t have to tackle Rick. Bre is starting.

Temple is thumping Maryland.

Their head coach, Steve Addazio, was villified at Florida last season when they continued to run the “Tebow” style read option with a pro style QB and their offense suffered.

I doubt Temple has the horses that Florida had, but Addazio is running the same offense and it is workign with the personnel Temple has. A credit to Addazio get the most of what he has to fit his system.

Wish UCLA was able to do the same.

by orlandobruin on Sep 24, 2011 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Temple lost a heart breaker against PSU last weekend

Obviously Golden gets massive credit for building a solid foundation and Addazio picking up right where he left off.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

And BTW

Temple’s DC is none other than Chuck Heater, one of the names mentioned during our DC search last year.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Heater was Florida's DB coach and Addazio brought him to Temple.

I know a lot about the Gators, considering how much I hate them . . .

Temple D looks sound and well coached

Nothing fancy, just hard hitting and physical. Good stuff.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

All the more reason to question the current regime

Tell me how the fuck Temple has a better coaching staff than UCLA?!

by Bellerophon on Sep 24, 2011 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

What's interesting to me

Is how these defenses are bringing in pressure. I referred to the Pitt game.

There was one series in which Pitt rushed one of their LBers from the end, but then dropped another one off into coverage. So they basically had 4 guys rushing the QB but because they mixed it up ND OL looked confused.

I actually saw Niners defense do the same against the Cowboys last weekend (gah! – before they choked). The D just rushed 4 but because they were bringing it from different angles it messed up the O. These concepts/schemes don’t seem all that radical but just a matter of the coaches throwing different templates.

I just wonder why we can’t see that from our guys.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Zone blitz

Usually involves the DE dropping back into pass coverage in the zone the LB would normally cover. The QB sees the LB coming and thinks the LB’s zone is uncovered, only to find a very large man there for the pick.

Domination on D Today.

Hey Nestor ...

as I’m watching Michigan I’m starting to worry that DG would actually try and hire Al Borges to replace Neu — you know, the UCLA connection thing.

Even DG isn’t that insane, is he?

by freesia39 on Sep 24, 2011 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Love Ed Hochuli

The guy is more ripped than most of the players.

Also, his bad call screwed San Diego and gave Denver a win a few years back. Besides the semi-guilty joy of that game for the Chargers misery and the Broncos win, Hochuli manned up and admitted afterward he blew the call and apologized. It didn’t change the outcome of the game, and the stupid Chargers still won the division, so I guess it all turned out right in the end.

Mike Riley:
On UCLA’s defense: They have done a nice job mixing some things up. They’ve hit us with some timely blitzes that have hurt us in the past. The biggest problem we’ve had is being able to sustain anything throughout the game. We’ve had our moments offensively where we’ve made some plays and looked good but it’s never been one of those games where it has been easy and to count on stuff and sustain things. They’ve basically controlled us in the past with their defense.

not sure if anyone is watching pregame on Prime Ticket

Rick was talking about the offense, got to the running backs:

“We have a good 1-2 punch at running back – it seems to bother people less than the 1-2 punch we have at quarterback”

Glad to see him maintaining a sense of humor – albeit gallows humor – amid it all. Really hope he can keep his head up and turn things around.
