BN Gameday: Oregon State Second Half Thread

Brehaut is off to a solid start in Corvallis. Let's hope he can keep it up. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Well ... it has been a while since we have gotten to write a short blurb leading into second half with a smile in our faces. FWIW Coach Rick Neuheisel's UCLA Bruins at least showed up in the first half in Corvallis. At the end of first half the Bruins are up by a score of 21-10(boxscore). The score could have been dominating if not for three holding calls and a special teams meltdown towards the end of the first half giving up a TD to Beaver punt return team.

The Bruin offense has generally looked pretty sharp in the first half. We are throwing it down field. Our receivers are catching with their hands (including Embree) and the running game churning out chunks of yards at the time. Even the defense has made some huge plays in the first half giving us momentum including from much maligned guys like Sean Westgate. Except for one long drive the Beavers had in their first series which resulted in a FG, the Bruin defense held the Beavers in check.

But hey we need to stay even keeled. Remember after all this is Oregon State we're playing.  These guys lost to Sacramento State.  At home.  So, no need to make radical conclusions about the state of our program just yet. Plus we saw the meltdown at the end of the first half. Still it's more fun to write this kind of blurb than the ones we had to write during half time of San Jose State. Let's hope the Bruins instead of keeping it conservative turn on the after burners in second half and close this out.

GO BRUINS.

I agree DC needed more carries

But in this game he had 6 carries for 36 yds. Coleman has 6 for 44, both had a long of 12. CRN needs to find a way to get good carries for both. Lasering in on one player or system is exactly what gets CRN into trouble, IMHO.

Yup

Why not sneak JJ out of the backfield, imagine someone trying to keep up with the speed of Smith & Carroll on crossing patterns. How is a LB going to keep up with them if you line them up in the slot? If you bring a Safety down, give Shaq or whomever a one on one matchup. It’s not rocket science but these coaches are just retarded.

It's difficult to cover as a defender

Because you’re moving laterally, you don’t know if someone is filing the space behind you, if you’re trying to trade off zones, it’s much harder to do so going laterally than vertically.

then had a KO returned for TD. It’s till cool~ Expecting OSU to just lay down and look what happens.

If we didn’t have talent, this would be more acceptable. However, that is not the case. This team is pathetic in every facet imagineable and Neu/Tresey have got to be 2 of the most retarded coaches out there. It is time for them to pack their shit.

Don't worry coach

We’ll be kicking you, too. Stay tuned.

Wins are way better than the alternative. Let's go shock Stanford!

Yep

I am not planning on conceding a loss up at the firm.

by Nestor on Sep 24, 2011 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That was ugly. 2-2 but feels like 0-4.

Neuheisel should be the Bruin fan he claims to be and leave.

That was the worst exhibition of coaching I’ve seen since Billy Barnes. And it was worse than Barnes.

Disgraceful. Shameful.

Wow... when was

the last time we were in 1st place in the conference and felt this bad about our team?

by rich87 on Sep 24, 2011 3:33 PM PDT reply actions

Yep

rick needs to own up and take the heat off his players by apologizing and giving credit for team wins AND taking full responsibility for losses, to the press/media. Haven’t seen him do that YET.

by LoyalAlum94 on Sep 24, 2011 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

ALMOST

an apology by rick. Almost.

by MathBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:33 PM PDT reply actions

Given the talent that we field ... fail

I don’t think anyone can intelligently support Rick’s continued employment after this season (outside of not letting DG make another coaching hire—but that isn’t really supporting Rick).

Thank god!

Players pulled together here. Need for our linebacker play to improve tremendously or Luck will slice and dice us…. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Bruins… I know I will :)

I used to not get

how you folks could watch a UCLA game and chat at the same time.

Now I get it. It’s what enables you to watch, without kicking the dog.

C'mon guys. This was nit SJSU at the Rose Bowl.

A conference win on the road is a win is a win. II’ll take it.

It just as easily could have been a loss.

We shocked a #7 Texas last year

We can shock a #5 Furd. Right? Right? I think we can do it.

We certainly have the talent. Everyone agrees with that.

out of 61 plays. With the best passer of the QB’s starting under center.

Anyone else a bit confused by that aspect of playcalling?

D-line

Is still my biggest problem with this team, linebackers bad too….we NEVER rush 4 and get pressure. BADDDD.

by selby4000 on Sep 24, 2011 3:37 PM PDT reply actions

Go Bruins... beat Stanford.

I’d be happy to wind 6 more games and have Neu back. But all that really matters is that we figure out how to have a defense to stop Stanford. I think our offense can score 30 points on anybody if we don’t make stupid mistakes.

Congrats on win. 1-0

This is NOT an overly talented team. I will be up in Palo Alto next week. It won’t even be close.

First 29:28: pretty good

Mixing plays, throwing punches, going for the win.

Last 30:32: Let’s get back to what we do. Soft cushions, sloppy special teams, ultra-ultra-conservative play-calling.
