BN Gameday: Oregon State Second Half Thread
Well ... it has been a while since we have gotten to write a short blurb leading into second half with a smile in our faces. FWIW Coach Rick Neuheisel's UCLA Bruins at least showed up in the first half in Corvallis. At the end of first half the Bruins are up by a score of 21-10(boxscore). The score could have been dominating if not for three holding calls and a special teams meltdown towards the end of the first half giving up a TD to Beaver punt return team.
The Bruin offense has generally looked pretty sharp in the first half. We are throwing it down field. Our receivers are catching with their hands (including Embree) and the running game churning out chunks of yards at the time. Even the defense has made some huge plays in the first half giving us momentum including from much maligned guys like Sean Westgate. Except for one long drive the Beavers had in their first series which resulted in a FG, the Bruin defense held the Beavers in check.
But hey we need to stay even keeled. Remember after all this is Oregon State we're playing. These guys lost to Sacramento State. At home. So, no need to make radical conclusions about the state of our program just yet. Plus we saw the meltdown at the end of the first half. Still it's more fun to write this kind of blurb than the ones we had to write during half time of San Jose State. Let's hope the Bruins instead of keeping it conservative turn on the after burners in second half and close this out.
GO BRUINS.

Hey dude
We get it. Our program is in tough shape. But don’t come here to attack our coaches and denigrate our program. Try that on your blog.
I'm just kidding around
It’s obvious OSU has problems right now, and I know you guys aren’t exactly hot on CRN, either… Not trying to poke :(
There are plenty of places on the internets
where other Pac-12 teams can have fun at UCLA’s expense. We are all frustrated here but that doesn’t mean we are going to let other teams’ fans come in here and pile on.
I pile on my Beavs here more than anything if you see my comments
but I can take a hint
You are welcome to stick around and have fun

I agree DC needed more carries
But in this game he had 6 carries for 36 yds. Coleman has 6 for 44, both had a long of 12. CRN needs to find a way to get good carries for both. Lasering in on one player or system is exactly what gets CRN into trouble, IMHO.

UCLA just seems snake-bitten when they’re doing well. I hope the players play the second half angry for having given up that ridiculous return to give OSU life.

This game is far from over. You break the will of a beat of team like OSU early. You don’t let them hang around. Who knows what will happen the rest of the game
We blew that chance
Up 21-3, if we scored a TD, that would have broken them.
Instead we punt, they return it for a TD and start the second half with a FG to make it a game at 21-13, instead of 28-3.

I see tons of open receivers all across college football running these plays
Yup
Why not sneak JJ out of the backfield, imagine someone trying to keep up with the speed of Smith & Carroll on crossing patterns. How is a LB going to keep up with them if you line them up in the slot? If you bring a Safety down, give Shaq or whomever a one on one matchup. It’s not rocket science but these coaches are just retarded.

It's difficult to cover as a defender
Because you’re moving laterally, you don’t know if someone is filing the space behind you, if you’re trying to trade off zones, it’s much harder to do so going laterally than vertically.

Rick became soft and settled for running three plays in a row.

OSU ANNOUNCERS
“UCLA Bruins doing everything they can to give OSU a lifeline.”
How come Joe Bruin's jersey has the full shoulder stripe?
by Objection Penguin on Sep 24, 2011 3:17 PM PDT reply actions
Yipe
OSU is still in this.
I’m thinking OT is now a distinct possibility.
Defense must hold.
DC will be a very good NFL player IMO
Cause real coaches will under stand his value and know how to use him
I don't care
what Angus Mclure’s bio says we don’t have a “special” special teams coach. Will this team ever be able to play a well coached 60 minute of football? After 3 years we shouldn’t be at this point. Never mind that we don’t deserve this kind of play
Larimore?
Did you not notice the WR crossing?
by McNown to Farmer on Sep 24, 2011 3:19 PM PDT reply actions
D-line
I say again: most overrated part of this team
Why is everyone complaining?
This is obviously the “bend” portion of out defensive strategy… we’ll hit OSU with that “don’t break” real soon…
10 tackles for Hester
cuz he lets OSU catch the ball and then tackles them after they make a first down…
10 tackles for Hester
Hmm, I wonder why…
Now let’s hear the average yards down field that those tackles are made.
Typical
Rush 3, drop too deep, give up easy crossing route.
by McNown to Farmer on Sep 24, 2011 3:21 PM PDT reply actions
Hahahahahahahaha
3rd and short? Riley dials up ANOTHER crossing route and we still haven’t figured that out.
Tresey = FAIL
Yawn!!!
It’s like watching HS football…UCLA shud be killing these chumps!!
by Trojanswearskirts on Sep 24, 2011 3:21 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I watched (part of) the DLS/Aquinas game on ESPN last night
those coaches would probably be offended by the comparison
formerly bruinhoo
Time for some more patented UCLA defense
The age old “bend over and take it until you break” defense.
OSU runs
They needed to give their receivers a rest
by McNown to Farmer on Sep 24, 2011 3:21 PM PDT reply actions
I don't understand why Oregon State ever runs the ball
They can get 10 yards on every pass play
I love Chris Horton
ThePredator48 Chris Horton
We are trying to lose this game. A blocked extra point now wow
Stanford
Luck will have 500 fucking yards on us next week.
by DaChiBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:22 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
What is the NCAA record for passing yards?
We’re going to see a new one.
by Seth Chandler on Sep 24, 2011 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Something like 710+ yards
Yeah, I can see Luck doing that against our D.
Short Pass
10-1 they throw underneath.
by DaChiBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:23 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
He was happy...
…that he didn’t tip it up to the receiver for a first down

Price hurt himself
Jumping after dropping a pick 6.
by McNown to Farmer on Sep 24, 2011 3:24 PM PDT reply actions
Don't sweat, Price..
better to get the INC than give up the first down
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Price hurts his knee on the celebration???
I may work with the Waves, but I'm still a Bruin!
(Formerly "HoozierDaddy")
haha you must not be watching the same team as me
we will run it 3 times and give the ball back
Troy is burning
by bruinbasketball on Sep 24, 2011 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions
what just happened?
Price deliberately knocking an easy pick down because of mistake last week?
At least he broke it up....
…but Price may have the worst hands ever
I don't think he was celebrating.
I think he was angry he missed the pick.
by Seth Chandler on Sep 24, 2011 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, man
I thought for a second Price might volleyball that pass to the receiver—like he did against Texas.
Finally
Tressey sucks. They were lucky. What do you think Stanford will do to us on 3rd downs when shitty OSU is 50%?
by DaChiBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:25 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Dude, under...way under
They’ll pull him after 300 yards and 4 TDs and Stanford is up by 35.
Luck + his back up will easily break 500 though.
Coleman
Coleman. Coleman. Coleman. NO other play right now.
by DaChiBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:26 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
UCLA first place in the PAC12
don’t get used to it
Troy is burning
by bruinbasketball on Sep 24, 2011 3:26 PM PDT reply actions
i love franklin too
but there are enough carries for both of them
I must say though
out of that group Price did jump the highest.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
to recap...
last game OSU only had like 23 yards… today they have 287 passing and prob near a hundred running..
sound familiar to anybody? SJSU anyone?
question if we win this game
prediction for OSU’s win total?
Road conference wins last 3 years were vs UW who finished 0-12 and WSU who finished 1-11. OSU gets to 2-10?
Pre-season, I predicted either 1 or 2 wins for OSU
Don’t recall which, but either one I believe was an optimistic guess now.

Finally – the right play calling.
by DaChiBruin on Sep 24, 2011 3:28 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
And......
Prince will have a “phenomenal” week at practice and will be named the starter against the furd.
if we run the ball next week
and control the clock, maybe we have a shot at winning?
ah who am i kidding.
A win is a win at this point. Whoo hoo!
U-C-L-A Fight, Fight, Fight! Go Bruins!
Go Lakers! Go Dodgers! Go Angels!
I'll take the win
But I still have a million concerns.

Congrats on the win, Bruins :)
I wanted a different outcome, of course, but hopefully this can be a stepping stone for the rest of your year.
cheers scotty
please get to 2 wins to be our best road win under CRN
Good Luck to you too!
Hang in there like us.
Good luck, scotty...
and bring it at the Civil War. I love me roasted duck.

Wins are way better than the alternative. Let's go shock Stanford!
U-C-L-A Fight, Fight, Fight! Go Bruins!
Go Lakers! Go Dodgers! Go Angels!
That was ugly. 2-2 but feels like 0-4.
Neuheisel should be the Bruin fan he claims to be and leave.
That was the worst exhibition of coaching I’ve seen since Billy Barnes. And it was worse than Barnes.
Disgraceful. Shameful.
Wow... when was
the last time we were in 1st place in the conference and felt this bad about our team?
Yep
rick needs to own up and take the heat off his players by apologizing and giving credit for team wins AND taking full responsibility for losses, to the press/media. Haven’t seen him do that YET.
Given the talent that we field ... fail
I don’t think anyone can intelligently support Rick’s continued employment after this season (outside of not letting DG make another coaching hire—but that isn’t really supporting Rick).
Thank god!
Players pulled together here. Need for our linebacker play to improve tremendously or Luck will slice and dice us…. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Bruins… I know I will :)
I used to not get
how you folks could watch a UCLA game and chat at the same time.
Now I get it. It’s what enables you to watch, without kicking the dog.

C'mon guys. This was nit SJSU at the Rose Bowl.
A conference win on the road is a win is a win. II’ll take it.
It just as easily could have been a loss.
We shocked a #7 Texas last year
We can shock a #5 Furd. Right? Right? I think we can do it.
We certainly have the talent. Everyone agrees with that.
U-C-L-A Fight, Fight, Fight! Go Bruins!

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over
and expecting diff results….Einstein
11 pass attempts + 1 sack
out of 61 plays. With the best passer of the QB’s starting under center.
Anyone else a bit confused by that aspect of playcalling?

by Trojanswearskirts on Sep 24, 2011 3:36 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
i dont care
im chanting undefeated, just for the hell of it
D-line
Is still my biggest problem with this team, linebackers bad too….we NEVER rush 4 and get pressure. BADDDD.
Go Bruins... beat Stanford.
I’d be happy to wind 6 more games and have Neu back. But all that really matters is that we figure out how to have a defense to stop Stanford. I think our offense can score 30 points on anybody if we don’t make stupid mistakes.
Congrats on win. 1-0
This is NOT an overly talented team. I will be up in Palo Alto next week. It won’t even be close.
And Brehaut is getting better...
the idea was clearly to manage this game…notice the 3rd quarter when we let them back in….but the offense seems to be OK.
Anybody else tuning into...
The highly anticipated Univ. of the Incarnate Word—vs.—West Texas A&M game?

head over there. Excuse any typos.
First 29:28: pretty good
Mixing plays, throwing punches, going for the win.
Last 30:32: Let’s get back to what we do. Soft cushions, sloppy special teams, ultra-ultra-conservative play-calling.
