I won't have any contributions for a while
Mrs. Fox 71 has ruled out football in favor of American Idol 2.0. That show would be tolerable with the sound off, but that’s not going to happen. I would rather listen to Lee Corso any day than this.
No offense to the BN men,
but it doesn’t surprise me to see Freesia leading the pack.
Many years ago, my wife worked for a company that had a weekly football pool. With her not being into college sports like I was, I naturally was kind enough to lend her my extensive expertise in picking winners. I knew who the powerhouses and doormats were. I knew who had all-star talent, and who the whiz coaches were. Sure, I’ll help, I magnanimously offered.
When all was said and done, “we” had an OK record, above .500. But, every week, there enough surprises and upsets to keep us from the winner’s circle.
Without me, Mrs. Bruinut picked winners along the lines of “blue beats orange” and “stripes lose to tiger paws.”
In two years, Mrs. Bruinut won the pool exactly twice. In those same two years, because I was out of town, I was unable to “help” her exactly twice. I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is “Yes.”
The question I have
How do we get more BN women on the frontpage? What can we do to make it happen and get more to join freesia? I know there are some terrific regular commenters here. It’d be awesome to see more participation in the coming weeks/months so when we make our next round of selections we havve more great choices.
People smarter than me will have to chime in,
but here are a few thoughts.
It’s inherently awkward and probably not so effective to put out a general “call for women.” Better, I think, to proffer invitations to specific individuals. I can think of several, right off the bat. Come to think, I don’t know of a single female BN contributor whose writing I wouldn’t want to read.
Similarly, it’s probably better to offer specific roles or tasks than a general invitation intended to increase female participation. For example, as with Bellerophon’s Bruin Bites, perhaps a regular “column” to be penned by women? You could poll the women, privately or otherwise, on what kinds of posts they would like to see regularly.
And, in recognition of peoples’ busy lives, men and women alike, the invitation might be less daunting if responsibilities were shared. Maybe, one or more regular “columns” could be job-shared by several women, such that no one of them had to put in burdensome amounts of time.
Of course, all of this glosses over the tireless and prolific contributions of the current BN front pagers, of whatever gender. Worse, in thinking about how to attract women contributors, I may well be guilty of stereotyping and unintentional condescension. I should shut up now.
Thanks for offering the thoughts nut
I think its an important conversation and would love to hear more folks on this.
Three of you picked OSU to cover at ASU?
Oh man… you have more confidence in the team than I do! I guess they could do it, 17.5 is three scores, but… Tempe isn’t nice to us historically.
With my performance
perhaps I should recuse myself from making any more football commentary…
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
I am enjoying my lead
Which I will probably relinquish this week. Go everyone I picked!

If you want to know my secret
It really is that I have none other than to pick teams I like. And being married to mr. F, someone that I can regularly bounce sports ideas and theories off of since he is so much better at insight. Except in baseball. I rule in that. Figure skating and gymnastics too.

I've always wondered how Vegas sets the lines on the beam
I don’t gamble, so I’m not very good when picking against a spread.
I’m more interested in wins than covering a number the handicapers pick to split the bet.

for the beam
Probably an over/under on if they will score a 15 or 16 combined score

The Arrested Development nerd in me can't help but laugh
That you used “Mr. F” in everyday conversation.
