OT: Maryland sets the new standard for ugly uniforms

We are getting the Florida version of just$c* against Maryland on TV tonight. I tried very diligently to fix the video on the TV, only to learn to my surprise that there was nothing wrong with it. Apparently that's the way Maryland wanted their uniforms to look.

A couple of partial Churchill lines come to mind. Never in the history of human endeavor has anyone created a sports uniform uglier than what Maryland is wearing tonight. If the Empire shall last a thousand years, people will say these are the ugliest unforms that ever were, are, or ever will be.

Oregon, you have some work to do if you want to reclaim the top spot in terms of ugly uniforma.

They are pretty disgusting

And they make me appreciate what we have at UCLA.

too bad adidas has already ruined those

it’s a little overwhelming but I like the fact they paid respects to the Maryland flag.

You know what it reminded me of ? a shirt that I had back in the late 60’s, back when modern art was the big thing. You would look at it and your eyes would get all screwed up.

Um,

Just think, somebody actually looked at those and said, “We’ll go with these. We feel these uniforms best represent our beloved and prestigious institution.”

There is something horrible going on in uniformdum!

I think the "u"’s are pretty bad too. Maybe we should post when we see decent unis.

did anybody see Georgia's Unis on Saturday?

How could they do that to such a storied and respected uniform?

Honestly,

I liked them. They looked sharp on the field, and they fit really well. I like the helmets, too.

Really?!

When I saw the helmets, I had an involuntary reflux to the movie, “Any Given Sunday.” All the teams have intentionally garish unis and over the top logos. The Georgia “G” is one of CFB’s old guard. I hate to mess with it.

Ironically, Boise State was also sporting some new flashy helmets and unis, and I didn’t mind so much. They are ‘new school’ to me. Oregon as well. They can do whatever they want with their unis. There is no tradition to offend. At least that’s how I see it.

Yes, I Really Did

I actually liked Boise State’s, too. They “fit” that team’s personality to me, I suppose. Speaking of “fit,” I am truly disgusted that ours—which are not at all attractive, anyway—don’t look like they fit any of our players properly. I just don’t think there can be any excuse for that.

I suppose I just haven’t watched enough Georgia football to take offense to the change, but the helmets looked good out on the field, I thought. Sometimes, these uniforms look good on a group, particularly a team playing on a green field, but when one starts looking at one player in the uni, maybe not so much. (That doesn’t apply to Maryland’s, though. They are just way too ugly any way one looks at them.)

As for Oregon, I have always thought their multiples were perfect for them. And, again, they always seem to fit perfectly. When you have a cheerful duck for a mascot, you’d better be a little out there and own it, I say, and they are and do.

All the uniform tinkering in college football

I don’t know if I am getting old, but it is turning me off. I like the fact that teams like Yanks, Dodgers have not done ridiculous tinkering with their unis.

I liked what we did with our retro look against Washington 2 years ago. Also, in hoops game last year as well (can’t recall which one but it spelled out “Bruins” in gold up front). That is fine. But just not big fan of trashy, dramatic tinkering. I find it gross.

Dang those uniforms are uglier than ours

We’re moving toward the “ugliest uniform in college football” designation with Saturday’s dainty little numbers, dark-blue-on-gold numbers, and tiny stripes. Maryland, though, has taken “hideous” to new lows. The state legislature may have to rescind public funding to that university for broadcasting such a monstrosity.

Typical Morgan Center incompetence and indifference. I know for a fact that they were flooded with complaints about what Adidas did to the formerly-best unis in the country: the tiny numbers, the idiotic microscopic epaulet stripes, the stretchy fabric that makes us look like beer-league softballers. Yet, nothing changed, nothing shook them from their inertia. They don’t care about football, they don’t care about alums, they certainly don’t care about the students (i.e. new Pauley seating), and it takes full-scale online rebellions before they even deign to accept feedback. I mean, really, how hard is it to have stripes that circle all the way down the shoulder? Depressing. We’re lucky they even launder the damned unis.

Sorry

But I love these uniforms. Is there no room for some avante-garde fashion in college football? Never hurts to get a little experimental – (also never hurts that can be pretty disorienting for the other team…).

by Maehew on Sep 6, 2011 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

Sure there's room for avant garde

But not all avant garde is good. Some avant garde sucks. In my opinion, Maryland’s uniforms were distracting. I couldn’t think about the game, which was a good one. Instead, I kept thinking that these uniforms are the only thing that could make me decide to turn the picture off and the audio on. (I opted to save my ears, because I was able to look away every so often.)

How’s this for an avant guard look for the Bruins. Sort of like the way Madonna does things. Our uniforms are much too small, so we change things around. We put our shorts and pants on, then put the pad on top of those. And maybe have every pad be a different color.

Or one blue pantleg, and one gold pantleg, with blue and gold checkerboard jerseys. You know, like the Dodgers have done, or like the Yankees have done, or like the Packers have done.

Or we could try to tie ourselves to a tradition of success, and duplicate the jerseys that Vermeil’s teams used, or that beat just$c* eight years in a row.

You know, I take it back. Just like there’s no crying in baseball, there’s no avant garde in football. There’s a right guard and a left guard, and sometimes a middle guard, but that’s it. There is no avant garde.

by Fox 71 on Sep 6, 2011 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

You may be on to something....

If a soccer goalie wears a brightly colored jersey to get his opponent to kick the ball at him, perhaps our defense could wear something gawdy and terrible that our opponents couldn’t help but run into them.

You can try something new

and avant garde that’s tasteful. This was not.

However, their goal was to get people to talk about Maryland, and that’s exactly what’s happened. They’re not exactly a football powerhouse but this got some attention…and it didn’t hurt that they won the game.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Twitter exploded. Everyone is talking. Oh, and Maryland won! We can call them crazy and laugh at them, but they got scoreboard. I bet they sold a few hundred or more of those at their campus store today and online, too. Now that’s $coreboard.

Everyone is talking about Maryland's opponent, too

I would like to think people talk about UCLA because it’s a classy place with classy teams, etc. Not because someone with major issues of taste was given carte blanche to try an experiment. Last time we tried an experiment, we ended up with CTS, and his record was pretty much the same as the Maryland uniforms.

This is college football, where exposure and attention are key. To high school kids, those uniforms look sick. I guarantee they liked them for the most part. They win.

by tasser10 on Sep 6, 2011 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

I kind of honestly hope kids don’t like those. I mean shoot, I can see kids liking the Nikegon uniforms… now the Maryland ones? They’re just a huge big mess. But each to their own, I guess.

Either way, you’re right. I couldn’t have cared less about Maryland before, and now they have an entire thread dedicated to them on BN. So I guess they won this one.

by UCantbeatLA on Sep 6, 2011 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

OJ has had plenty of threads dedicated to him, too

There are many TV shows emulating the Maryland uniforms, such as all the housewives shows and the one about the tasteless, classless New Jersey people. Maybe we can have all our players pull an armed robbery. We would get plenty of attention that way (although we would only tie just$c* in that department). How about UCLA women doing sex tapes? More good publicity there, and of course it would lead to another TV show.

by Fox 71 on Sep 7, 2011 6:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I like the Oregon

uniforms, but really dislike the new Maryland jerseys.

by uclakid123 on Sep 7, 2011 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I sense the generation gap

I would be interested in knowing what percentage of geezers (and I guess honorary geezers) think the Maryland Oregon Howard Stern look is better than the classic uniforms of the past. The other side of that coin is how many kids (defined any way you want, I suppose) like the old style better than the new.

My guess is that more of the only demongraphic group that matters (what is it? 16 to 49?) would prefer the new, vomit-inducing uniforms. (Not to try to influence the vote, or anything.)
