"They were very good at throwing the ball underneath," Neuheisel said. "But truthfully, if we stay where we’re supposed to be and don’t come out of zones and don’t come out of gaps, we’re going to be just fine."

Neuheisel refused to blame a defensive game plan that had cornerbacks Sheldon Price and Aaron Hester playing seven yards off the ball much of the time, instead putting the onus on players who got out of position because they were trying to do too much.

"First game, wanting to make plays, wanting to make somebody else’s play," he said when asked why UCLA defenders they were so often out of their zones. "And it was not something that we saw in practice. First game and wanting to do that. We just have to trust that the offense and defense will work if we stay disciplined."

I admit it, we are all wrong

The seven yard cushion was a brilliant scheme made to look bad by the players.

Thanks for straightening that out for me coach.

Now I get it.

All would have been well if our guys had stayed in position seven yards off the ball. Hmm. If they’re seven yards away, and the guy catches the ball in front of him, then every two plays is a first down. Or maybe my math is off.

And staying in position means that we would have tackled the other guys. That is, if the other guys ran to where they were supposed to run, which iw where we were lined up.

I won’t be surprised if he starts talking about “turning the corner” and having a “movement.” Next will be the nice picture of him in a sombrero.

This is bad, Bruins. It is very bad.

How do we get San Jose State to only run to where we are in position, instead of to where we are out of position?

Bear

Ever heard of a guy named Bear Bryant? He said when it’s bad it’s my fault

I hate those comments

it is the same kind of garbage we used to get from Bullough.

But, I am going to go out on a limb here: my suspicion is that the coaches thought we could do just enough to win this game. And we almost did, had it not been for one TD drive with horrible tackling by the entire defense. I am beginning to think that they are saving a few things for the Texas game (on defense), since the Longhorns play a spread offense as well. I am reserving judgment until after the next 3 games.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I hope not

I’d be really dissapointed if we blew a chance to start the season on a positive note so that we could beat another team a few weeks down the road. smh

That’s like saying, let’s not show anything all season so that we can beat $C in december.

by King J77 on Sep 6, 2011 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Like I said

that was probably the plan going into the game. The coaches were probably confident that we’d squeak by, I doubt they expected that we’d fall behind 31-14. Anyway, I’m just speculating. I still think we’ll beat Texas.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

ah, gotcha

yeah, that was probably the plan going in. I thought they’d show just enough to win on D and spread it around on O to gain confidence in the passing game. 1 out of 2 aint bad…the loss was though.

If any of the coaches even hint that they held anything back on defense

against a QB who could very likely end up as the leading passer in college football history, then that coach should be fired. Immediately. Don’t take your opponents lightly. Ever.

If “we thought that we could squeak by” passed through any of the coaches heads, then UCLA football is in worse shape than I ever imagined.

Just for the record, I don’t think they took Houston lightly and I don’t think that they are holding anything back for Texas. The Bruns were out coached and outplayed, at least through the first half on D.

Is it just me

Or does this seem kinda ostrich-like? Seems like there’s a disconnect between HC, DC, the defensive players, and the viewing public.

by impaulv on Sep 5, 2011 11:48 PM PDT reply actions

in fairness

if the players don’t execute the gameplan as called, it’s tough to know how good or bad the gameplan was. Watching the game, I have no idea whether the questioner was right to ask why ‘UCLA defenders were so often out of their zones’, but he did.

And in fairness to CRN, there aren’t many milder ways of criticizing players than saying that their overenthusiasm for the start of the season got the better of them.

I Cannot Stand It

If your players are doing something incorrectly over and over again during a game, and it is actually causing the other team to have more points on the board than you do for the entire game, do you not correct them during the game?

Our Team Wanted This Game

They clearly wanted to be coached to win. I wrote this as an answer to an email yesterday:

Candidly, the look on Brehaut’s face, his posture, his walk…it was almost heartbreaking. Still on the field, he kept his chin up, earnestly congratulated Casey and the Cougers, he was a true sportsman and a gentleman. This kid has class, and he did us proud. But, after he came into the “alleyway” beside our section, he sagged. He was filthy, obviously disappointed and clearly tired and sore. We all cheered for the whole team as they walked by, of course. A few of them responded to us. There was no “sore loser” behavior whatsoever from any player, but I have never seen any team or athlete, after any loss, “big” or “small,” so quiet, still, and pensive.

I’d bet that any and each of those guys would have done anything they were told to do—made any adjustment they were told to make, fixed any mistake they were making—to win this game.

Does anyone thing the coaches *didn't* want to win this game?

Can anyone image Tresey either blowing it off or not making adjustments (the fact that Houston only scored once in the second half suggests that the D did adjust).

I forgot who said it, but I think that they hit the nail on the head: our team started slow for the first two drives (on both sides of the ball). That put them up 10-0 at the end of the first Quarter.

by KnudsenRockne on Sep 6, 2011 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Can Adjustments Only Be Made At Halftime?

By the end, our offense had the ball nearly ten minutes longer than theirs did. The Cougars made two touchdowns in under two minutes at the end of the first half…the time for adjustments was before that happened, especially since it could be seen coming.

Our offense adjusted by the 2nd quarter and made up for their slow start, our defense did not. They could have played two additional quarters, and if our guys continued laying back seven or eight yards off the ball, they simply would have lost by more points.

The point is that the “plan” didn’t work, it never worked, and CRN seems to be blaming the players instead of taking a critical look at the plan.

I’m with Fox, (above), just looking for the sombrero, at this point.

2nd and 11 at UCLA 42: Team rush for a loss of 1 yard to the UCLA 43.

  End of 4th Quarter

I see dropped passes, a fumble and conservative calling after being up 31-14 being the reason they didn’t put up more points. Nothing on the drive summaries or from watching the game again on sunday make me believe any changes were made to the scheme.
