Game Thread for UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans: BEAT SC!

UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans, Jan 15, 2012 6:00 PM PST

Will Joshua Smith #34 of the UCLA Bruins rise above the Trojans tonight? He better. . (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)

USC is hoping to throw out the record book and play their game of the year against UCLA tonight at 6:06 p.m. PST at the Galen Center on Prime Ticket and Fox Sports Net. USC has been truly awful on offense but their defense is good and could give them a chance if UCLA does not come to play.

The USC preview is here. The UCLA preview is here and the gametracker is here. Bruins Nation articles are on the side. De'End Parker is again out and according to his Twitter feed may be a medical redshirt. UCLA has not won on the road this year and USC has not won in the Pac-12.

Go Bruins! Beat SC!

my god…are we going to beat Washington at all this year?

Lorenzo Romar may never win a national chamiponship

but somehow, it seems like he gets his players to play hard every game.

Hmmm...I see him as more Lavin-esque

Great athletes who play a few big games all year (unfortunately, we are usually one of those) and make reasonably deep runs into the tourney. But, like Lavin, I agree I don’t see Washington winning it all with Romar

by uclaluv on Jan 15, 2012 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

Offensively this is good

After the slow start. Hope Zeek realizes that he can score and pass. That was when we took off. He has 11 points and 4 assists. So he is responsible for as many points as SUC has scored.

On Defense. It is too hard to judge this game. They are bad. This is the worst team we have played on offense all year, including the exhibition.

But still it is impressive that we are doing so well on offense.

by DCBruins on Jan 15, 2012 6:57 PM PST reply actions

No the Wears are tired

And we are coming apart a bit. Smith is subbing in to give Travis a rest. He was looking really tired.

by DCBruins on Jan 15, 2012 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

I tend to agree

the bigger problem is both Wears are tired. This is a time to play Lane a couple minutes.

by DCBruins on Jan 15, 2012 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Agree -- play stover

maybe stover and smith at the same time

Too many missed layups

When they show flashes of being a good team, they start showing why they’ve struggled this season. Terrible missed opportunities.

Sorry, but the entire change is not on Reeves

playing Powell more has helped.

Smith getting better.

Stover getting minutes

More zone

really, cbh had to stop being stubborn — it was not all reeves

sjh

by Class of 66 on Jan 15, 2012 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Well

It was on Howland for not disciplining Reeves from his first season. He is the one who kept giving Nelson one break after another and looked the other way.

by Nestor on Jan 15, 2012 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

my point is that had he made those changes

we would have been better, even with Reeves on team.

I’m not defending reeves or saying he should still be on the team

But blaming reeves is letting cbh off the hook

sjh

by Class of 66 on Jan 15, 2012 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

No I get that

But I am also blaming Howland for not disciplining Nelson sooner. The steps mentioned above – most of us called for it long time ago.

by Nestor on Jan 15, 2012 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

true

part of Howland not being stubborn was him holding players accountable. No more Dragos. Ever.

by BamaBruin on Jan 15, 2012 7:42 PM PST reply actions

Terrible

Back to back turnovers that were just horrible plays. Lucky that sc can’t shoot or else this lack of focus would really hurt the team against a real team.

by UCLA4Life on Jan 15, 2012 7:43 PM PST reply actions

I tuned into the second half expecting to see an improved Bruin execution

… instead a lot of the same issues:
- Lamb is mediocre at best J shooter
- Josh still fumbles around under the basket
- Zeke still misses a number of passes into Josh down low
- Norman still on Fr learning curve
- PG quickness of SC causes lots of penetration

Kerr properly questioning Smith's desire

more than once asking whether he really loves to play the game.

I would be a shame if he’s playing because it’s expected of someone with his potential, talent and size.

Great win Bruins

I’d say winning by 20+ (not counting garbage time), holding them under 50pts total, and out rebounding them by a 2-1 margin is pretty decisive.

That's sort of what I thought

They’re as bad in Bball as we are in Fball. They’re so bad we don’t even taunt them.

Looked like all the players’ parents showed up in the one shot of the seats that I saw.

There were lots of Bruins.

You could hear them doing UC..LA and they even got the U.C.L.A. wave going around the arena towards the end.
