Game Thread for UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans: BEAT SC!
UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans, Jan 15, 2012 6:00 PM PST
USC is hoping to throw out the record book and play their game of the year against UCLA tonight at 6:06 p.m. PST at the Galen Center on Prime Ticket and Fox Sports Net. USC has been truly awful on offense but their defense is good and could give them a chance if UCLA does not come to play.
The USC preview is here. The UCLA preview is here and the gametracker is here. Bruins Nation articles are on the side. De'End Parker is again out and according to his Twitter feed may be a medical redshirt. UCLA has not won on the road this year and USC has not won in the Pac-12.
Go Bruins! Beat SC!

I read in the other thread that Gus Johnson will be commentating
I hope this game isn’t even remotely close, beat $C!
Lorenzo Romar may never win a national chamiponship
but somehow, it seems like he gets his players to play hard every game.
Hmmm...I see him as more Lavin-esque
Great athletes who play a few big games all year (unfortunately, we are usually one of those) and make reasonably deep runs into the tourney. But, like Lavin, I agree I don’t see Washington winning it all with Romar
Wow, for once it is better to be on the East Coast
We have it here live
Not getting the game here...still showing UW
would appreciate commentary!
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
If the Wears play right, they won't need him early

Maybe Howland is superstitious
He played good last game off the bench

And a really terrible one

At least he's not *as* big...

Right now 4 shots and 3 TOs

I guess this is why SUC was a 1 point favorite

How can a trogan get a rebound between Smith and Ware?

Powell is in by the way
I think he helps with the nerves part strangely
ANderson ugly
We need the ball in Jones hands late in the clock
Well, only if you want Jones shooting
cuz he aint gonna pass.
I don't see any reason Shabazz would want to come here
unless he really loves beaches and warm weather
We're looking sloppy on the man D...
Can’t seem to beat the screens…way too many open players.

Watching Smith play makes me wonder?
Does this kid have anyone in his circle that can get through to him? How is he still fat and out of shape this far into the schedule? Disappointing!

I think Howland is choosing Lane over Stover some now
Interesting. I prefer Stover but Lane is better on the Boards and offense.

Go inside out
Go inside out first with the Wears/Smith.
Zeek should lead and shot attempts
Jerime can hit an open three.
Tyler should slash some on the weak side and is good at feeding the post.
Bad offense so far
Zeek not passing
Wears shooting outside
Jerime and Lamb being out scored by Stover
SC is very good on defense but they don’t have much talent. GO inside out.
Wear Wall may be coming back
Good D on the low post

71% from the field to southern cals 28%

"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that counts" - John Wooden.
It seems like our players confidence is growing every game though
Powell and Jones not hesitating(not like jones ever hesitated, but still). The Wears more confident posting up too…
Not sure whether to credit Howland for pulling the trigger
or fault him for taking so long to do so. Imagine if we started 5-1 this year.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Offensively this is good
After the slow start. Hope Zeek realizes that he can score and pass. That was when we took off. He has 11 points and 4 assists. So he is responsible for as many points as SUC has scored.
On Defense. It is too hard to judge this game. They are bad. This is the worst team we have played on offense all year, including the exhibition.
But still it is impressive that we are doing so well on offense.
Speaking of that.
Did you see the two guys behind the announcers that had the 50-0 shirts? Step on them Bruins!!
Been a Bruin since birth
Yep, and one of the guy unbuttoned his shirt
Just so the 50-0 can be featured more prominently. I hope they show it off some more. It only helps to make our point at BN to our players in the football program.
We need to embarrass southern cal!
"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that counts" - John Wooden.
Agree and I think we will
Last year when we had more talent we would not. THese guys play hard, just start like s%^t. We had as many TOs as baskets early.
This could be a historically bad SUC team
We need to win in such a way that they’ll consider dissolving their program.
Watch out what you say, or they'll send some knife wielding athlete with a bad fitting glove after you
Here at galen
Great team energy. Crowd of UCLA fans sprinkled around the center. We can make some noise. If play like this the second half we are sending a message to the conference.
by Uclaart1970 on Jan 15, 2012 7:03 PM PST via mobile reply actions
SUC is still a good defense team
Teams are shooting 40% against them and we are hitting 64%. That is truly impressive
I dunno
The Trojans are (in Charley Barkley voice) TURRIBLE.
Least talented team in the worst hoops conference in America. Dog crap awful.
They held UNLV and Kansas
to 41% shooting. They can play D. Offense you are very right.
Give it to CJM...
with a note….NEVER AGAIN
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Nope, we have done this often this year
I had a post on this. We start bad.
yes, nevermind, just checked the stats page
172 turnovers, 10.8 per game
next lowest is actually $C with 206, while Cal has 11.8 per game
I think the Trogans are retiring Harold Miner's jersey this game ...
… or something. Do any of you even remember Harold “Baby Jordan” Miner?
Tell Shabazz his games next year can be called by Gus Johnson.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Dam Zeek set that one up with a pick
But Demond made a nice block
And it's 100% true
High-flying scorers are a dime-a-dozen in the NBA. But guys who can play great defense, set good screens, rebound, take good shots and be smart with the ball ALWAYS have a spot on an NBA team.

I agree with Kerr and was just going to post that we are better without smith
sorry to say it, and I’d love for one of the +- guys prove me wrong.

It is mixed
Yes sometimes it is true. But there are times when we need Smith. Smith is the only guy when he is on, is unstoppable. Problem is now he is off more than on. Hopefully getting better.
We're doing pretty good

No the Wears are tired
And we are coming apart a bit. Smith is subbing in to give Travis a rest. He was looking really tired.
I tend to agree
the bigger problem is both Wears are tired. This is a time to play Lane a couple minutes.
Too many missed layups
When they show flashes of being a good team, they start showing why they’ve struggled this season. Terrible missed opportunities.

Sorry, but the entire change is not on Reeves
playing Powell more has helped.
Smith getting better.
Stover getting minutes
sjh
Well
It was on Howland for not disciplining Reeves from his first season. He is the one who kept giving Nelson one break after another and looked the other way.
my point is that had he made those changes
we would have been better, even with Reeves on team.
I’m not defending reeves or saying he should still be on the team
But blaming reeves is letting cbh off the hook
sjh
No I get that
But I am also blaming Howland for not disciplining Nelson sooner. The steps mentioned above – most of us called for it long time ago.

greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Terrible
Back to back turnovers that were just horrible plays. Lucky that sc can’t shoot or else this lack of focus would really hurt the team against a real team.
I think this slowing the game down really takes the fight out of our players.
It’s hard to have a rhythm like this. They play well when they’re not thinking.
Go Bruins!
I tuned into the second half expecting to see an improved Bruin execution
… instead a lot of the same issues:
- Lamb is mediocre at best J shooter
- Josh still fumbles around under the basket
- Zeke still misses a number of passes into Josh down low
- Norman still on Fr learning curve
- PG quickness of SC causes lots of penetration
Kerr properly questioning Smith's desire
more than once asking whether he really loves to play the game.
I would be a shame if he’s playing because it’s expected of someone with his potential, talent and size.

Great win Bruins
I’d say winning by 20+ (not counting garbage time), holding them under 50pts total, and out rebounding them by a 2-1 margin is pretty decisive.
