I'm not surprised.

This site is usually quite accurate. Wonder who Coach Mora has targeted?

this may be a dumb question

but, why would a playoff NFL DC want to coach college FB? This may be naive, but it seems like a huge demotion. Also, UCLA can’t pay NFL-type money.

I doubt they're looking at a DC

more likely one of the defensive position coaches

by BillytheSid on Jan 16, 2012 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks Billy

that makes more sense. Do you know if they get an increase in salary that way?

by UCLA_beer&mathematics on Jan 16, 2012 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

They might get a bump in salary

Not sure how NFL-level position coaches compares to NCAA-level Coords, salary wise.

But I’m not even sure that salary would be the biggest motivating factor for many of these guys. More likely it’s the opportunity to move up the ladder, increase the resume, take on more responsibility, and showcase an ability to be a DC.

There are only 32 DC jobs in the NFL, so if you want to be a DC and show that you can manage an entire defensive unit, you either have to be good/lucky enough to be one of those 32 guys, or jump down to the NCAA level.

Fangio, oh please let it be Fangio!

I doubt it, but still. That would be so awesome!

by BruinMW on Jan 16, 2012 1:45 PM PST reply actions

Not going to happen dude

Fangio’s next gig will be a head coaching position.

I'll take anyone from a defensive staff on any of those teams

Seriously.

Ravens/Niners/Giants all have great defenses, and any Pats coach will be a Bill Belichick product which is awesome.

Pats D

not so awesome :\

the pats d is bad

more because of personnel than XOs imo

I agree

you know you’re a ragtag bunch when your slot WR/PR is playing safety and your other safety is your bad corner. But responding to Billy’s post…Belichick products are not so awesome. Look at Crennel (Browns), McDaniels (Broncos), Mangini (Jets and Browns), Weis (Notre Dame) and Al Groh (Jets, Virginia). None of the coaches from Belichick’s 2nd HC gig have been awesome. First time around w/ the Browns? He had Nick Saban, Jim Scwartz and Kirk Ferentz on staff. Awesome

Oops

Didn’t see your post. Not so awesome details – posted above

This could be good

3 of the 4 teams left in the playoffs have strong, tough defenses. This is in spite of two quarterbacks (Brees, Brady) this year breaking Dan Marino’s 27 year-old passing record, with a third (Stafford) coming close. In a day where the NFL is driven by elite QBs, it was the pass-rush of the Niners/Giants/Ravens that prevailed in the end.

I bet Mora’s targeting one of those D-line coaches.

With Dorrell or Neu

We’d be hearing rumors of the Bengals’ water boy for DC.

I know we’ve gotta play a game or two first, but I see a big difference in Mora’s approach to this. Could he be playing a game of chicken with signing day, waiting to give us that last minute, yet big edge? Is he that savvy already?

Coach Mora grew up in

the home of a successful NFL and college coach. Pretty sure he’s learned a thing or two from pops. I imagine Jim Mora Sr. still has a well full of football savvy and knowledge for Jr. to draw from.

My guess would be Jim Leavit

Linebackers coach for the 49ers and former head coach of USF

by abasketballfan on Jan 16, 2012 2:52 PM PST reply actions

Yep.

I even heard this rumor about two weeks ago.

by UCL@ on Jan 16, 2012 2:57 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Leavitt would need to keep his nose clean considering how he left his last college gig.

Controversy for allegedly striking a player and then trying to cover it up (i.e., asking other players and coaches to change their story).

That's true

A background check is needed to discover if it was an isolated incident or if there’s a history of problems. He has had great success on the field so the the reward compared to the risk may be worth it.

by abasketballfan on Jan 16, 2012 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

That's the only one I know of, and I think it was a slow news day

and a reporter tryng to make more of something than it was worth.

I don’t think it will be Levitt because he is anti-Hollywood. He’s not handsome and his voice sounds like he had his throat stomped on more than once. He is not smooth at all. LA fans will require smoothness above all things.

DL coach Jim Tomsula of the 49ers

He’s Coach Mora’s man, I’ll bet. Tomsula has coached 28 seasons of football at the high school, college and professional levels. He has been a head coach, assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, special teams coach, linebackers coach, defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach.

Tomsula joined the 49ers after enjoying one of the most successful stints in NFL Europa history. Prior to being named the head coach of the Rhein Fire in 2006, which made him the youngest coach in NFLE history at age 38, Tomsula served as the Berlin Thunder’s defensive coordinator for two seasons, winning World Bowl XII in his first season with a defense that ranked first in the NFLE against the run.

The speculation

is over. We have a 3-4 defense beast with a long Steelers pedigree as DC. Lou Spanos is the man!
