UCLA Football Recruiting: Bruins Nab A Quarterback From Texas
AHMB noted in his recruiting reset this am that a QB signing is a "must" for this off-season. Well the wait is over. As fanshotted by 4everBruin T. J. Millweard from All Saints' Episcopal School (Forth Worth, Texas) has just committed to UCLA. At 6'5, 205 Millweard could potentially be a good fit in Coach Noel Mazzone's offense at UCLA. A tall QB with a gun from Texas. Hmm. Someone needs to put together some Tommy Maddox highlights on YouTube [better than drudging up this painful memory (warning ugly band tune in the background) ] to remind us how such a QB can be pretty cool thing in an explosive Bruin offense.
It was his relationship with Mazzone that resulted in this commitment for UCLA. Millweard was a commit for Virginia Tech before switching over to Arizona State. Once Mazzone to UCLA became official speculation heated up about his commitment to UCLA. After last weekend's recruiting trip, he didn't waste any time to make the decision. He probably also wanted to commit fast before Nathan Sudfield tripped to UCLA (which was supposed to be this upcoming weekend IIRC). It will be interesting to see what Sudfield and our coaches decide to do.
Either way Milweard's decision addresses a big need in terms of depth concern at QB for UCLA. More on him after the jump.
If you have not seen Milweard's tape before, you can check out here (via DevilsDigestTV). You can also check out his profile on Scout.com which provides the following assessment:
This evaluation is based on a 7 on 7 tournament so not everything can be scrutinized. He has great leadership skills and plays well under pressure when the game is on the line. He made several amazing passes to the corner of the end zone putting it in perfect stride with his receiver and so that only his receiver could catch it. Had a couple of passes sail on him but he was very accurate on the day, needs to get a bit quicker on the release.
A little more at BruinsBall.com. ESPN lists him as a 4 star QB fwiw. With Milweard's commitment UCLA's QB depth chart shapes up like this for 2013 season:
Brett Hundley (redshirt sophomore)
T. J. Millweard (redshirt freshman)
Jerry Neuheisel (redshirt freshman)
Eddie Printz (true freshman)
I imagine the coaches will be looking to take at least 2 QBs (including Printz) for the class of 2013. I will also not be surprised if we see a QB transferring into Westwood. All in all, the way Jim Mora and Noel Mazzone have addressed the depth issue at this position the last few weeks has been pretty encouraging.
Welcome to Westwood TJ.
GO BRUINS.

If our coaches can coach, the 2012 season should be exciting. Almost forgot, we need good QB play because the talent is there for all positions next season.
Hopefully, long suffering Bruins will get redemption.
yes!
Our coaches can coach =) The players need to listen they have a SUper Bowl CHamp on their staff. This falls on the players now.
Oh wow, really?
Awesome! That means we don’t ever have to fire any of our coaches ever again! Oh goodie! If we don’t win, it’s the players’ fault! Hail to the bus driver!
Super Bowl Champ on staff = winning for sure! Gosh golly gee, we should have figured out that formula sooner!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Printz seems to "get it" re: QBs at UCLA
Eddie Printz @FreshPrintz7
when you to a school like UCLA there is a good QB in the class ahead of you and the class behind you. #StepYaGameUp
Hope the other guys have that same attitude this year and in future years.

New culture at UCLA!
as opposed to "when you go to a school like UCLA and there is a good QB in the class ahead of you and the class behind you. #TransferYaGameToFurman

millweard seems to have a lot of interceptions
about 2:1 touchdown/interception ration, Eddie Printz ration much better
the more the merrier
id rather 10 4* qbs on our roster than one 5* because then one of them will probably pan out. thats a bad analogy, but what I’m trying to say is we will take both of them and see who is better. right now i think it should be hundley’s job to lose and millweard should redshirt. we shall see!
Great "Chin whiskers!"...
welcome to Westwood MillBEARD! Hope you pan out like the other Texas QB that went to Stanford!
+1

Maybe highest rated...
but lowest “Star average”. High ranking due to quantity…not quality. Not that there isn’t quality. Still a very good class. Goes to show the drawing power of UCLA even following recent disater of the last few coaches.
that's factually incorrect
the average star ranking is about 5th, it’s definitely not the lowest.
how are YOU counting it?
per Scout, average star rating for UCLA is 2.93 (vs Oregon 3.47). UCLA is ranked 10 but Oregon is ranked 11. Not too much to read into it, but it seems Gogetthem has it correct.
On the other hand, the star system is more of a guideline to talent not set-in-stone law (Pirates of the Carribean, anyone? hehe)

Well...
this doesn’t require high mathmatics to figure out…out of the top 20 or 25 teams I saw…only UCLA and West Virginia had a “under” 3 star rating average. All the rest were 3 and above. We/you(odysseus!) must be taking about something else.

True but...
Rivals rankings which only measures 5 and 4 star recruits has us ranked at 21. We have a ton of 3 star prospects, and a lot of times the difference between 3 and 4 star can be negligible.
With a couple more signings we’ll have a top 15 class no matter what measuring stick is used.
10-4 on that jwher...
I have ZERO complaints regarding this class. I am amazed it’s as good as it is! May the coaches squeeze every ounce of ability out of these guys! Tremendous class all things considered!
Soo..
when does CJM start telling some recruits that their services will no longer be required? We can’t keep them all….or can we?
I'm sure he already has started
but judging by the buzz around the program lately, they might not WANT to look elsewhere and some of them might be still choosing to just walk-on. Who knows, we won’t hear anything publicly. Worst case scenario (even though it’s kindof a dick move), Mora will just pull scholarships from guys he doesnt want.
Even though you like having depth at these positions
I wouldn’t be surprised if they ask some of our lesser-recruited DB and OL recruits (Guys like Nario Yakoo, Treyvon Watson, Jerico Richardson, Isaiah Folasa, etc ) to either greyshirt, walk-on, or look elsewhere.
Well, Coach Mora can recruit and hire!
Now if he and his assistants can coach as well as they recruit and hire, we’ll have found the real deal.
So far there has not been one misstep. And it looks as if Coach Mora is hiring his own staff this time, and not having one imposed on him by you-know-who.
Has anyone seen Printz' profile?
He plays for the Trojans in Georgia. It was a little off-putting. Red and gold uniforms, the old-school Trojan-head on their helmet. He’s even #7.
But I love the kid on film. Looked good.

Same with '12 commit LB Kenny Orjioke.
I’m sure Orjioke had a hand in getting him to look at UCLA.

What happened to Ka'imi Fairbairn, UCLA's only committed kicker?
Scout took him off the committed list while Rival still has him listed. UCLA certainly needs a KIcker.
Can't we bring back our soccer manager? After all, he red-shirted his first four years.

Lol, awesome idea!
Let’s enroll him in grad school, it would work!
He is looking at Cal
Hasn’t jumped, but I don’t know if he stlll counts as a verbl commit at this time.
formerly bruinhoo
Well
He’d be the only guy going the other way towards Cal at the moment…
If true, why doesn't Rival decommit him or why hasn't Scout listed him as a soft verbal?
Could Mora have culled Ka’imi out? Anyway, If Ka’imi is gone, UCLA certainly needs a good kicker.
A bit of good news
Greg Biggins @GregBiggins 3m
After a home visit with Coaches Mora and Klemm tonight, LB Aaron Porter said his commitment to #UCLA is rock solid
THAT'S what I'd like to hear
admittedly, it would be kinda dumb to jump ship after all the buzz surrounding the recruiting
Off-topic
But I’m over at the California Golden Blog and man… there is some bad blood between U DUB and Cal going on. For those that don’t know, UW poached another one of Cal’s WR coaches. It’s hilarious but epic-ly sad for Cal at the same time….
More fun for us. GO BRUINS.
Cal is hating Sark big time right now.
Can’t blame them. Losing Lupoi, especially at this time, was a huge blow to Cal’s recruiting class. With the Bears’ ups and downs under Tedford, they really depend on top talent. In the meantime, Lupoi’s switch might raise questions about his loyalty to a program and could hurt UW in the short run.
We need Mora and staff to use this opening to really solidify our recruiting class and message to recruits. With *$c being in the doghouse, Cal and UW in flux, and Stanford becoming a question mark without Harbaugh and Luck, this is really a blue and golden opportuinty for the Bruins.

Agreed
There’s no doubt that this power-play by Udub definitely opened some doors for UCLA, nonetheless it does leave some pretty bad taste behind. I mean while it’s kinda amusing to watch it unfold, this pac-12 shank by Udub is nonetheless shady and is going to fundamentally shift power to the northwest.
It isn't very sporting, is it?
All’s fair in love and college football, and UW is clearly going all in to try to catch up with Oregon.
And I really like the phrase “Pac-12 shank”.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
I think the most telling thing
from all the recent news is that the PAC-12 definitely woke up and is serious in college football. I expect good things (and lots of shady things) down the years, exciting to say the least.
True - times are changing
I’m watching this UW defiling of Cal with a sort of combo of bemusement, horror, and fascination. And I’m locking all my doors.
Some day we’ll look back fondly at those naive innnocent days when *$c was only buying houses for a player’s family. Ahh, we were all so simple back then.

It's hard not getting excited about all this News...
i was excited about what i was hearing before this last season.

lookin good guys.
Nice tall QB with a good arm will be perfect in Mazzone’s scheme.
JT34 need your break down!
good looking stuff in the video. see a lot of QB draws too! saw some lineups that looked like the pistol?… dunno, should be an intense spring practice with all this competition coming in! GO BRUINS!
QB Haden Reddig
UCLA and Coach Mora should go after a Good QB right here in their back Yard. Cathedral High School in LA’s 6’4 210lb QB Haden Reddig. He was All State as a sophmore and had over 900 Yards passing in 2 games before being injured ACL the second game of the season. He is the younger brother of Boston College QB Chase Reddig. Go Bruins and Go Phantoms"

throwing motion...
Is damn near identical to Brock Osweiler… that was the first thing i noticed in the video.
Recruiting class ranking is as meaningful as.....
…..a “Do not remove” mattress tags.
More relevant:
1. Can our coaches grow and utilize the talent?
2. Will these guys play hard and have a Bruin attitude?
3. Why is Dan Guerrero still our AD?
very pleased that our new staff can recruit but our business is unfinished with DG laughing on Mora’s coat tails. CJM is making DG look like a idiot savant.

What a week
I wake up yesterday to find out McCarthy commits and this morning Millweard is also on board.. Wow Coach Mora and his staff are putting in some work.. I havent been this excited since 08 when we got Riley,Shirley and a couple more recruits to sign on signing day… But we all know how that class worked out.. Either way we are making headway… on another note everybody has been riding DG on all blogs and calling for his head as well but nobody has pointed out that hes on the tourney selection for the ncaa.. hes the reason why we got those favorable rankings but most importantly kept us on the west bracket when we made those final four runs… Does he still need to go maybe but i think come march we are going to need him if we dont take the PAC-12 tourney to atleast get us a 14 or 15 spot…
We don't need him
The team needs to earn their way in with their play, not use their incompetent AD’s position to sneak us in to take pressure off of the coach and, by extension, the AD.
+1!!!!
Guerrero also petitioned for our 6-7 team to play in a bowl—only to have the entire country laugh at us. Playing post-season is earned!

Are you drinking the Kool Aid?
What’s wrong with Spaulding Field? 11 years of football garbage, save one freak year. Firing Toledo for Dorrell for Neuheisel. The completely botched coaching search. (Hopefully, he got lucky on his fourth coaching decision.) Accepting incompetence year after year, blowout after blowout. Meddling with coaching staffs. Basketball a joke, hanging over a cliff, praying for salvation on the come of the next class. Another transfer. The Pauley restoration fiasco. The fraud on the students only cured by the open rebellion of the alumni. A tone deaf Moron Center. A pretty darn good program. Strapping it on every day but somehow face palming on Nikki Caldwell. But as Block would say, “Hey, did you see the Cal game?”
HILARIOUS!!!
DG is the reason we got those good seeds? You are smoking crack, Abi. DG is not allowed to be in the room when they discuss UCLA’s seeding. Another ignorant comment. He does NOTHING for UCLA’s seeding. Yeah, he did a lot of good seeding us in freaking Philadelphia to play against Villanova in 2009.
Put. The. Pipe. Down.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Don't forget a really fine QB on the roster . . .
Remember Brett Hundley, 6’4"; 220 lbs, and is smart and knows the game.
