She will be missed
but her voice lives on forever!
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Great pipes
“AT LAST” . Just thinking about that song gets the hair on the back of my neck saluting!
"At Last" was my wife's and my first dance at our wedding reception.
Such a great song and such great memories for us.
Rest in peace, Etta.

Same here.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
Johnny Otis -- Yesterday
Johnny played a powerful role in the civil rights movement — in both voice and actions. He railed against segregation in the entertainment industry and in accommodations.
Otis, white and Greek, refused to stay in one place while the Black members of his band were forced to stay in another. Over and over again, he put his career on the line to force equality in housing and compensation.
He also discovered and nurtured a stable of successful artists.
In Sebastopol, he was my brother’s patient. One of my favorite memories — Otis was playing a club in Santa Rosa. We were at a table watching. “Doc” come on up and play with us. He handed my brother a sax, put a loud trumpet next to him, and let him play a set.
RIP Johnny. You done good.

She also completed a number of 4th quarter comebacks in her life
From heroine, alcohol, and finally obesity. From 1995 to 2008 she had a great run of music and performances. A force indeed, and an inspiration.
Thanks for the post. Johnny Otis was definitely a trailblazer much like
Jackie Robinson, Mayor Tom Bradley and so many other great African American Bruins.
RIP. You will be missed.
You always sang with great passion.

Lady had an incredibly rich voice. RIP.
Heaven’s got another headliner on the marquee.

"It's not who you are underneath. It's what you DO that defines you."
NPR -- Terry Gross James and Otis
Reruns of part of an interview with Johnny Otis and a segment on Etta James.
At the end, they credit Otis with discovering James.

I always liked Etta and I'm probably too young for it.
Apparently, my parents would play her records to put me to sleep as a kid. Maybe it’s a mental thing. IDK.
Think it is a little odd that she passes away while her voice is heavily sampled in two very popular songs right now.

I've had to tell several friends that the Avicii song is Etta James' vocals
Which other one is she in?

Another club song.
Flo-Rida I think.
Same sample from “I Get A Good Feeling.”

the Etta James sample is the intro to her song "Something's Got a Hold on Me" btw
had never heard the Flo Rida “Good Feeling”—but I’ve heard Avicii “Levels” a ton.

That was just an absent-minded post.
That’s the Flo-Rida song’s title. Not the sample.
Long night. haha.

She was one of a few vocalist...
who when you heard her everything stopped! Her voice was so commanding that once it started, it hijacked your attention! Very few singers can accomplish that.
Went to the Great Western Forum in the Late 60’s and YES"" with Jon Anderson was the last of 3 opening bands for some headliner group that I can’t even remember! Well as usual the opening acts were being soundly ignored…and then when Anderson started singing the “Etta James” syndrome kicked in. It always amazes me the extra gear certain people have! Natural??? more like supernatural!
