Game Thread for UCLA at Oregon: Trying to Win Outside Southern California

UCLA Bruins at Oregon Ducks, Jan 21, 2012 1:00 PM PST

Will Howland play Anthony Stover #0 more minutes this afternoon for his post defense. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

UCLA has not won a game over a Division I opponent outside Southern California. Part of the problem for UCLA has been the slow starts. Last game against Oregon State UCLA started down 8-0. A fast start today would help as would better interior defense. Howland has praised Anothy Stover's defense, let's see if he plays more this afternoon as it would seem to help CBH get his 200th win as the Bruins head coach.

The official UCLA preview is here and the gametracker is here. The official Oregon preview is here. UCLA needs a win for too many reasons to count but it is now in seventh place in the conference and a loss tonight would push them below .500 in conference and make even there long shot hopes of winning the Pac-12 tourney more difficult as they would have to be in the first round play in games.

CBH has the team he wants playing well on offense. Will the defense do its part? Will he play zone? The only thing that is certain is he needs a win this afternoon.

Go Bruins

Remember people

After the discussions we’ve had this week, we need to ask people not to post online feeds for these games anymore. Thanks.

by Tydides on Jan 21, 2012 12:48 PM PST reply actions

Pirated, illegal feeds

Are not protected speech. Believe you me, I think it sucks and I hate Big Media as much as anyone else, but we have to play by these rules or risk BN getting shut down (or worse, us getting sued).

I always thought that it was legal as long as the advertisements were not cut out

but it appears I was wrong. Maybe because of regional rights/advertisers?

by JimmyBurke on Jan 21, 2012 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

Wait? Are you serious?

Are you actually altering your policy because of SOPA? LOLOLOLOL!!! WOWOWOWOW. I don’t actually know what to say. Having a no feed policy is fine, but having it because of legislation that had no chance of passing is laughable

Look

SBN doesn’t want us to do it, okay? DMCA is still out there and we’d rather not cause problems for SBN. Get it?

Did they change the rules?

Is it no longer a foul when you pull the opponent backwards in the low post to keep them from going for a rebound? I’ve now seen Oregon do it at least four times, doing nothing to box out the ucla player, but simply pulling him backwards. None have been called.

Watching a full game, I see what I think is happening with the SPRT's

When the offense and defense look out of synch, you get bad calls just for looking bad. the opposite is true when you look good – we never got bad calls back in the Coach Wooden days and there were plenty of bad refs back in the day

Good...Defense...

when JS isn’t in, they’re quick on their feet, closing off lanes nicely. Not getting that many open looks. Not to mention Stover takes away the vertical shots….
Bad….JS is still out of shape, and we need to get back on the free throw line in practice, preferably with major noise in the background.
Ugly….TL is walking the edge between greatness and disaster. He’s always on the verge of losing control of the ball when he dribbles, but he has a good court eye when he dials it back. Plus, can we get Stover to work on some shooting drills?

My 2 cents…your mileage may vary.

If Howland wanted him to be a back to the basket

Bang down low kind of center, then he’d try to put on some weight. His and Smith’s situations aren’t even close to the same. Smith is barely functional at his current weight.

This is so frustrating!

Joshua Smith has officially become the biggest slug of the year. He should be embarrassed with his effort on the court, his effort in the weightroom, his effort in conditioning. He is lazy and costing us the game today because he can’t do crap. Sorry….but I am tired of watching his lazy ass walk up the floor, miss two footers, not dunk, etc. I would much rather watch the Wears give effort and not be that good than Smith give no effort and suck

This season is a wash

The coach has lost the plot. This team is no fun to watch. Regardless of a win or loss here, this is basically a lost season. I have no reason to believe we can catch fire and win the P12 tournament or do anything of note. I will only go to games to watch Stover and Powell. Finish this season’s bleeding. This makes me sick. When Howland's first final four team was up by 13 at the half, they'd win by 26.

If they were up by five, they’d win by 10. If they were up by 10, they’d win by 20. Not every time, but pretty darn often. They played as if they didn’t have a lead.

These guys? What did they think Oregon was going to do in the second half? Just roll over?

Howland's problem doesn't happen as much

during games…but on recruiting trail. We went from Farmar and Collison and Westbrook and Afflalo to Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson. Jones shoots 16 times? The ball needs to go inside. Wears playing better and we play better D with Stover instead of the human buffet line.
