Game Thread for UCLA at Oregon: Trying to Win Outside Southern California
UCLA Bruins at Oregon Ducks, Jan 21, 2012 1:00 PM PST
UCLA has not won a game over a Division I opponent outside Southern California. Part of the problem for UCLA has been the slow starts. Last game against Oregon State UCLA started down 8-0. A fast start today would help as would better interior defense. Howland has praised Anothy Stover's defense, let's see if he plays more this afternoon as it would seem to help CBH get his 200th win as the Bruins head coach.
The official UCLA preview is here and the gametracker is here. The official Oregon preview is here. UCLA needs a win for too many reasons to count but it is now in seventh place in the conference and a loss tonight would push them below .500 in conference and make even there long shot hopes of winning the Pac-12 tourney more difficult as they would have to be in the first round play in games.
CBH has the team he wants playing well on offense. Will the defense do its part? Will he play zone? The only thing that is certain is he needs a win this afternoon.
Go Bruins

Remember people
After the discussions we’ve had this week, we need to ask people not to post online feeds for these games anymore. Thanks.
Pirated, illegal feeds
Are not protected speech. Believe you me, I think it sucks and I hate Big Media as much as anyone else, but we have to play by these rules or risk BN getting shut down (or worse, us getting sued).
I always thought that it was legal as long as the advertisements were not cut out
but it appears I was wrong. Maybe because of regional rights/advertisers?
Wait? Are you serious?
Are you actually altering your policy because of SOPA? LOLOLOLOL!!! WOWOWOWOW. I don’t actually know what to say. Having a no feed policy is fine, but having it because of legislation that had no chance of passing is laughable
FYI: UCLA's women's water polo team
opened the season with a 9-3 win this morning over Colorado State at Michigan. Second game later this afternoon.

I’m going to watch one more game this year to see with my own eyes one last time why he needs to go.
what an ugly court
dont think ill ever get used to it

one thing that bothers me about is our defense is there are lots of hands and arms

its david wear vs ej singler

I like the effort so far
except for Smith everyone hustling.
but him draining the 3 thirty seconds earlier?
make up my mind.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
the wears are nice complementary players
Coach hated the slam dunk. He preferred his players to make lay-ups. So I don’t know how to characterize the wears. I do predict even with our large early lead we will tire, fade, and the other team will adjust to whatever we’re doing
so does the put back by tyler lamb
signify a saving grace headed this team’s way?
No, that was Hollywood
They could not knock down Smith if they wanted to.
smith's idea of defense is flopping. he should let those guys bounce of him
but that would require establishing position
smith should have spun the other way

Tyler Lamb ...
is it just me, or is he very slowly becoming a very nice, complimentary player? Not a star, but the kind of kid who contributes by doing the little things right.
I don't know
He is not the stopper on D he was advertised but he does play hard. He caused the TO by CBH shooting too quick that time.

It's true. Never confuse activity with achievement says Coach
but I usually like what stover does out there.
The offense flow is hurt by Stover
but the defense certainly is helped.
Did they change the rules?
Is it no longer a foul when you pull the opponent backwards in the low post to keep them from going for a rebound? I’ve now seen Oregon do it at least four times, doing nothing to box out the ucla player, but simply pulling him backwards. None have been called.
I have seen that against the Wears
It is foul

Watching a full game, I see what I think is happening with the SPRT's
When the offense and defense look out of synch, you get bad calls just for looking bad. the opposite is true when you look good – we never got bad calls back in the Coach Wooden days and there were plenty of bad refs back in the day

Good...Defense...
when JS isn’t in, they’re quick on their feet, closing off lanes nicely. Not getting that many open looks. Not to mention Stover takes away the vertical shots….
Bad….JS is still out of shape, and we need to get back on the free throw line in practice, preferably with major noise in the background.
Ugly….TL is walking the edge between greatness and disaster. He’s always on the verge of losing control of the ball when he dribbles, but he has a good court eye when he dials it back. Plus, can we get Stover to work on some shooting drills?
My 2 cents…your mileage may vary.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
OT Kevin Love Fitness at UCLA
Read thread. Did anyone discuss Love’s comments during game last night about his fitness training at UCLA?
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
When asked about his weight loss
he said the most he weighed was at UCLA IIRC @ 260+ because they had him working out with the football team and drinking muscle milk and now that he was around <230, he was way more effective. Thought it was interesting.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
It would be consistent
If Howland wanted him to play center. He’s obviously a true PF at the NBA level, but in college it’s less clear.
Consistent with what? Josh Smith's fitness training?
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
If Howland wanted him to be a back to the basket
Bang down low kind of center, then he’d try to put on some weight. His and Smith’s situations aren’t even close to the same. Smith is barely functional at his current weight.
The Ducks are shooting 22%
For at least a half Howland fixed the D.
I think the Wears are playing well
like there work on the Boards
And getting set on D. The block the lanes well

Aren't these supposed to be OUR announcers?

Joshua Smith has officially become the biggest slug of the year. He should be embarrassed with his effort on the court, his effort in the weightroom, his effort in conditioning. When Howland's first final four team was up by 13 at the half, they'd win by 26.
If they were up by five, they’d win by 10. If they were up by 10, they’d win by 20. Not every time, but pretty darn often. They played as if they didn’t have a lead.

MJ calls it a great win for oregon
I call it a typical Howland loss
Singler killed us
We made him look like Kobe second half
There is no PG on this team. Cannot win without
a good point guard. Just like FB with no QB!
After this...
I can not and will not support CBH anymore.
We all knew what line-up was working in the first half. He didn’t start with it in the second. He waited until we lost the lead .
Louisville, KY for UCLA class of '87
Garbage!!
CBH made too many bad decisions….his time has passed.
I'd like to see another poll to see Howland's support on the Nation
I know policy shouldn’t be done via polls, but I continue to be interested why people still support this guy besides the three final fours.
If we win the pac12 tourney......
……will we need a waiver to goto the big tourney with a losing record?
Yes…..it’s me…Dan Guerrero.
Missed FT's, bad passes, missed D assignments, unforced TO's, Tubby Smith
and this group of not very highly skilled players this year. Yep, must be all Howland’s fault.
Right?
That's the point...
yes, there are legitemate concerns about CBH…but the guys on the floor play the game.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
It's a circular argument
Who’s the guy who recruits the players who play on the floor.
I just hope we do not lose any of our commits from next year, or Powell this year, he sure doesn't seem happy coming off the bench
With the season lost, why not start Powell and give Stover more minutes?
Howland's problem doesn't happen as much
during games…but on recruiting trail. We went from Farmar and Collison and Westbrook and Afflalo to Lazeric Jones and Jerime Anderson. Jones shoots 16 times? The ball needs to go inside. Wears playing better and we play better D with Stover instead of the human buffet line.
Here's Fatboy Slim's line. 12min/6pts/3reb/4TO
BENCH MIN FGM-A FTM-A REB TO PF PTS
Joshua Smith, C 12 1-3 4-6 2 3 4 4 6
If he's playing smith for points...
it’s not working this weekend.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
