NFL Championship Sunday Open Thread - 49ers/Giants; Patriots/Ravens

One of the very few times you will see red featured on the front page of Bruins Nation.

Today the NFL is set to narrow down its final four teams to the two squads that will battle - and given the current state of the UCLA basketball programs, this is the closest to a final four that the Niners/Giants/Ravens/Patriots fans here at BN are going to get for a while.

The San Francisco 49ers host the New York Giants later this afternoon in the NFC Championship Game, the game that will likely dominate BN's attention this afternoon. Aside from having a pair of 49er alumni on the UCLA coaching staff - including head coach Jim Mora, there is pretty heavy support for the 49ers among the front pagers and from what I have seen over the past weeks, a fair number of fans in the community. With that said, there is also some affinity on BN for Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PST on Fox.

Today's championship game action starts off with the New England Patriots hosting the Baltimore Ravens, kicking off just after noon PST on CBS to decide the AFC champion. For folks looking for a UCLA angle in this game, the Ravens have Brendon Ayanbadejo on the roster as a linebacker/special teams player. The Patriots also feature Bruin representation, with Matthew Slater as a standout special teams player who has seen action at wide receiver and as a defensive back this season. Bret Lockett is also a member of the Patriots, though he has spent the 2011 season on injured reserve.

John Harbaugh's decision to kick FG

Instead of trying to go for 6 on 4th and inches near the endzone early in Q1 is going to cost him.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 2:57 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I was calling Harbaugh several names...all that related to his lack of balls when he called for the FG.

I could not believe he didn’t want to go for 4th and inches in Q1, but went for it on 4th and 6 in Q4. Are you kidding me!!!!

no reason at all for the Ravens not to use their last TO there

when the placekicker is sprinting downfield to his position with the playclock under 15 seconds, why the hell did someone on the Bmore sideline call that timeout. hell, taking a delay of game w/that field position would have been better that rushing Cundiff that badly.

Manning

He is getting a lot of time to throw.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 3:52 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Comeon

Where is the pressure?

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 3:55 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

There you go

I want the Niners to do to Eli what they did to Joe in 91.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 3:57 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Question:

Is it common in professional football for guys to climb up on the television mount after a touchdown? And I’m surprised they get that kind of a flag on a Harbaugh team.

by bluetoo on Jan 22, 2012 4:07 PM PST reply actions

It's a technicality but the right call

It’s a prop.

Thought on VD.

Think Vernon Davis is playing like he’s jealous of all the love the other Freak Athlete TE’s have been getting this year. No man that large should run a sub-4.4.

Harbaugh should have gone for it on 4th and 2 @42

He obviously hasnt read the percentages here on BN.

by chirobruin on Jan 22, 2012 4:48 PM PST reply actions

Kind of surprised by it

I thought they’d get Eli Manning’s jersey dirty. It’s still pretty clean and it shows in the scoreboard. Unless the Niner D get to Manning consistently and throw his rhythm off, it will be a super bowl rematch between the Pats and Giants.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know how consistent they've been all year

but the giants line is looking powerful this evening. They’re picking up the pressure very easily . Maybe some halftime adjustments will expose the weak spots of their line. Judging by the way the tackles have been blocking, the pressure needs to come from the interior.

by MathBruin on Jan 22, 2012 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

And there you go - nice pressure on Eli!!!

Now the Niners need some points in the next series.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 5:55 PM PST reply actions

Yup!

Some momentum would be nice.

by Bruin15 on Jan 22, 2012 5:57 PM PST up reply actions

Niners need to score on this upcoming drive

Can’t put it on the defense alone, especially with Eli and his receivers.

by Bellerophon on Jan 22, 2012 6:05 PM PST reply actions

Sorry to all you 49ers fans for coming on here with UCLA football news.......

but I waited purposely until the end of the third quarter to give you some news if you haven’t heard. Jeremy Castro just flipped from Oregon to us. He announced it on twitter that he is a Bruin. Now go back to rooting for your Niners. Good Luck

Yep

Post will go up as soon as the Niners game is over. :-)

Niner defense

It’d be very cool to see the Bruin D tackle like that some day.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 6:45 PM PST reply actions

There aren't many people in the history of football who tackle like Willis.

But as a team, hell yeah. I’d love that.

Thought so.

No one would expect people to tackle like Willis.

Collectively they are such a vicious unit

It’s breathtaking to watch. I haven’t had a good dose of “Ben Ball” in years. Feels like this is the first time in years I have seen a team I root for play vicious D.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

Scary vicious.

They swarm, always bring it.

Enjoyed watching them play all year, especially after the Bucs quit in week 7.

I think that was a fumble.

But his forward progress was stopped.

Hate that rule because if he was falling forward instead of backwards, it would be a fumble. Progress should work both ways, IMO.

What a finish.

Phew - thank God no SPTRs in the NFL

Those morans would have called a PI or something.

by Nestor on Jan 22, 2012 6:55 PM PST reply actions

Don't see how you can win a game without converting a 3rd down.

But 2 separate NFL teams played a full game without committing a penalty. So you never know.

What will we see here

Play it safe for a long FG, or keep pushing for a TD?

It was blatant

When Smith is past their center and he’s yanking him back by the back of his pads. Fucking ridiculous.

Tough way to lose a game

Bummed for my Niner friends. Still, to get to the NFC Championship was quite a season.

Just noticed – the holder was wearing a ring. Never seen that before.

This hurts. And will hurt for a long, long time. I have no interest in hearing condescending remarks from my coworkers tomorrow. Good night.

The Giants have proven one thing, though.

You can play like absolute crap for the entire season. All that matters is getting hot at the right time. The regular season is virtually pointless. Whatever.

And I agree. I’m thankful I’m in LA, and not in NY like my best friend.

by BruinMW on Jan 22, 2012 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

Just home from the game,

What a bummer. Three huge plays decided this one. Two bonehead plays by Kyle Williams, and a blown non fumble call on Bradshaw. This hurts.

by SF Bruin on Jan 22, 2012 8:46 PM PST reply actions

Chance to shine blown

Williams had a chance to shine by replacing an injured player. This is the NFL now. How does he make such bonehead plays when given the chance to shine?
