Dr. Zeke and Mr Jones
Because, alas, I don't get to watch the games, I have to focus on the statistics, and some things just jump out at you. In the tradition of Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde, I give you:
| game | who | FG/FGA, assists, turnovers | T.Wear |
| UCLA 65 Arizona 58 | Evil Mr Jones | 5/16, 4 assists, 3 turnovers | 7/9 |
| UCLA 75 ASU 58 | Good Dr Zeke | 3/10, 10 assists, 1 turnover | 5/7 |
| UCLA 66 USC 47 | Good Dr Zeke | 6/11, 5 assists, 2 turnover | 7/12 |
| OSU 87 UCLA 84 | Schitzo Dr. Jones | 6/17, 8 assists, 1 turnover | 8/12 |
| Oregon 75 UCLA 68 | Evil Mr Jones | 6/16, 1 assist, 3 turnover. | 7/9 |
Howland moved him to off-guard after the Arizona game, wryly commenting that "Zeke has no trouble with taking shots." At the time his assist to turnover ratio for the season was around 1.5 or 1.6, which is bad.
His first game as an off guard, he had 10 assists and only 2 turnovers, a truly "good dr zeke" performance. I thought "wow, this is a good thing." I forgave him for only shooting 3/10 because hey, any guard can have an off night
The next game, he was pretty solid overall. It was like he was becoming a good player
The next game, Schitzo Zeke Jones arrived: he continued to pass and got a lot of assists, and for the first time this season, his assist/turnover ratio crept above 2, which is mediocre. But he started getting full of himself and started cranking up the shots again. So he gets a big positive for looking to pass but a big negative for shooting too much, and it seems like dark clouds were beginning to gather overhead...
Against Oregon, he was fully back to being Evil Mr Jones, not looking to pass at all, shooting a poor percentage, and keeping the ball away from Travis Wear, who has been hot for five games and was shooting 77% on that particular day. Way to go Mr. Jones! And what is this? A Game Ball from your opponent!! Woo hoo!
So the big question tonight: who will show up, Good Dr Zeke or Evil Mr Jones?
The great irony here is, if he still has a fantasy about going pro, only Good Dr Zeke has a chance of even getting a tryout. For a guy his size, 8-10 assists against 1-2 turnovers looks pretty interesting. Defensive ability (which he does not possess in abundance, despite two years under Howland) is interesting. For a senior point guard, Good decision making is fundamental. Point guards who take too many shots and hit a low percentage? No thanks...

It seems to me that Zeke was pretty solid last year.
This year he seems to alternate between playing solid team basketball and not so solid, looking like he’s trying pad his numbers. Could it be something as simple as realizing this is his last shot to try out for the NBA? It would makes sense. Everybody knows Howland’s system is not a firework show. I bet he is simply trying too hard
Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. ~ Vince Lombardi
yup
But the irony is, he’s a point guard – he should be trying to rack up assists, not score. Especially on this team.
so far we are seeing Good Dr Zeke...
5 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 steals, 3/6 FG. If his assists + steals > turnovers + FGA, then he’s playing great as far as I’m concerned.
very good balance when Good Zeke shows up...
Right now 6 bruins have taken 6 shots and NP has taken 5. tough to defend against balance like that.
And it's Good Dr Zeke!
3/6 FG%, 6 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 6 rebounds
took a good number of shots, had a good number of assists, plus the bonus steals and rebounds. Hard to complain! If he does this consistently the team will play a lot better on offense.
but will he do it consistently…?
We have good Dr Zeke so far against Colorado
2/3 shooting, 3 assists, 1 TO. If he keeps playing within himself he’ll shoot a higher percentage and so will everyone else.
Definitely Good Dr Zeke!
9 assists again, and a high shooting percentage. Plus he led the rest of the guards into the same sort of mindset. Great job of leadership by Good Dr Zeke.
