McDonald Chooses Gophers Over Bruins
As an criminal defense attorney, my job is to be cool and collected and avoid becoming an "alarmist" in the eyes of the judge, jury, or my client. So, at the expense of being labeled an "alarmist" by readers of this blog... This recruiting class needs more WR's.
As some of you already know, Andre McDonald (a wide receiver from Minnesota) has committed to Minnesota over the Bruins, among others. This is a loss simply due to the fact that as of today, we have but one wideout committed to the class. McDonald was a 6'2'', 200 lbs. wideout with great hands. Scout has him down has a high three star and ESPN has him down as a fourstar. this would have been a great pickup since he had named us one of his top two and recently visited our campus (how can someone see our campus and NOT want to immediately come to out school??).
I wish McDonald the best of luck at Minnesota.
Getting down to brass tax, our receivers underpreformed under the CRN administration, we all can admit that. Further, we are losing our most "formidable" receiver in Rosario due to graduation and another due to disciplinary reasons. This leaves us with a big whole, especially since Mazzone will be running the spread next season which requires four receivers at a minimum.
Simply put, we need bodies. And having just one WR commit isn't enough. Some of us agree that Jevon Williams will sign with us by the end of it. Conceding that, two WR's recruits can't be enough. And I am not 100% sure Williams is a lock.
.... And now, Off to Court.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Welcome to the growing list of Bruin JD's on this blog
It’s a bummer to be losing what looks like a solid WR. However, maybe it’s just because I’m still scarred from Dorrell’s infatuation with recruiting at the WR/DB positions, but I just don’t get too concerned about being thin at WR versus having a great QB and solid Line play.
Between Lucien, Shaq Evans, Marvray, Jordan James and Thigpen, and Fauria we have a lot of young talent and speed that can get out there and catch the ball. Bell, Johnson, and Jerry Rice Jr. give the depth needed, along with what I’m sure will be one or two DB recruits flipping over.
PS, it’s such a minor point that I wouldn’t normally point it out, but just in case it comes up in a brief or two, the expression is “Brass Tacks” not “tax”
I dunno
If SC can teach us anything, its that having studs at the WR position can make your QB look like a rockstar.
HMMMM....since we have so many Bruin JD's on here......
….isnt there some legal challenge that can be made to get DG our of Morgan Center????
A class action on behalf of the citizens of California on the wasting of their tax dollars
We need standing
standing is a problem
If we can find that he did something wrong (misuse of funds, stealing from public coffers – something like that), then maybe there would be a violation of the False Claim Act. We can ask the Attorney General (or the DA? Can’t remember) to institute an action to recoup the money, and if the AG refuses to file, then our whistleblower gets to file with an “ex rel” in the caption: “The People of the State of California ex rel Bruins Nation v. Guerrero.”
You younger JDs who are still junior associates and therefore quite used to being given crappy assignments should research this issue and get back to us. Now I will relax with the other geezer lawyers and let the youngsters pull the the laboring oar.
With the group of current talented UCLA WR and TE's we have on roster....
it would be nice if the Bruin Passing game for 2012 included: 1) running consistently ‘good routes’, 2) they catch the ball if it is thrown to them, 3) the QB has enough time/protection in the pocket to throw or is mobile and can throw to open receivers, and 4) QB looks off receivers and goes through his progressions faster with confidence. With the current group of WR, TE and RB’s we have people who can make a difference, but lacked the fundamentals to succeed. However, with all that said, it still would be fantastic to have two or three 4-5* WR recruits in every class!
Your excellent point number 3
is really point number 1. All very good points you’ve made.
I have every confidence that Coach Klemm and Coach Mora will get the O Line squared away. If I am right in that belief, our QB will have time to make reads and go through his progressions. We had a strong ground game that I think will be even stronger this year (refer to point 1). Any O lineman worth his salt loves to punish defenses with the run game. We have some O line bulldozers, with more coming. A strong running game allows the passing game to flourish. If the D plays tight to stop the run, Coach Mazzone’s style of offense lets the playmakers make plays and burn the D with the short passing game. Receivers Coach Yarber knows his business and Coach Mora isn’t going to let a lackadaisical player do anything but ride pine. Players will have to earn their playing time, and that requires meeting all of Coach’s expectations, on and off the field.

I'm not so sure
Somehow I feel like Mazzone is going to use the personnel at his disposal. He recruited a FB and a TE, which makes me think that we might see quite a few 2 and 3 WR sets. This team is not talented at WR right now, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see us go to a more run first approach with some spread mixed in. Quotes from Mora seem to indicate a multiple set offense as well. This bodes well IMO, because they’re not being oblivious to the kind of talent we have. 2 years from now we can expect to see much more spread elements. We’ll see.
Local Schools Should Get Local Kids
I can understand how a Minnesota kid would choose to go to Minnesota — and there is a lesson for us in terms of recruiting local talent.
The University of Minnesota has just opened a brand new, on campus, incredible stadium with top notch facilities. Football Saturdays are a big deal. The Big 10 is full of pomp, pageantry, and tradition.
If we had the same on campus capability, we’d be more competitive for local talent.
sjh
There is a good lesson there.
It appears Jim Mora and Co already grasp that lesson and are going after CA talent in a big way. U SuC plays in the Colosseum, designed for track and field and other Olympic events. It is not that great for football, unless you like watching Lego Football. It hasn’t hurt them, but being close to campus cancels the lousy setting. We play in the Rose Bowl, perfectly designed for one thing only; football. An on campus stadium isn’t going to happen; this isn’t Minnesota where the gophers outnumber the people. Our chance for a stadium on campus was lost many decades ago, unfortunately. Winning has a curious way of filling seats though, no matter their location. Jigsaw Dan hasn’t put the pieces of that puzzle together yet. Regardless of DG’s incompetence, Coach Mora has every intention of making this happen by building a winner. Great weather, unmatched location, countless diversions, the beaches, history; UCLA has all of that and more. Minnesota kept a good native son player home. I wish him the best and good luck to him in his career. We are doing just fine with recruiting.
Don't. Give. Up.
Block is older than I am. He won’t be there forever.
