Colorado Buffaloes at UCLA Bruins Game Thread
Colorado Buffaloes at UCLA Bruins, Jan 28, 2012 1:00 PM PST
Today's riveting matchup between the mediocre-by-record UCLA Bruins and the mediocre-everywhere-but-the-record Colorado Buffaloes promises to be a exciting interesting important game.
The stakes are quite high...for Colorado. The Buffs will attempt to continue to outplay their metrics and stay in the hunt for an inaugural Pac-12 Championship with a second conference road victory at Chianti Dan Guerrero's Garbage Arena. Meanwhile, the Bruins will try to keep their heads above water in the conference standings. Sitting at 4-4 with the Ben Howland Bermuda Triangle Washington roadtrip on deck, UCLA needs to take advantage of this prime opportunity to pick up a win.
(Ancient) history will be on the Bruins' side today. From the official preview:
This is the sixth meeting between UCLA and Colorado with the Bruins leading the series 4-1. UCLA is 4-0 all-time in games contested in Los Angeles. The Bruins won the last meeting, 104-70 in Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 2, 1977.
UCLA comes into this game as 8 point favorites. Game will be shown on Prime Ticket.

It may have already been covered, but small forward Xavier Johnson committed to Colorado sometime ago
and here’s a video of him dunking over Shabazz Muhammad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkogO_TVXY8
Ok, that doesn’t make him any better than Shabazz, but he is a local mater dei player who seems like he could have been a solid surefire get for UCLA, as opposed to Shabazz who is still a wildcard in terms of who he will commit to.
Still searching
but have not yet found any stream of this game. I look forward to the conference getting their digital presence going (and to having much better Bruin teams to watch).

C'mon Jerime
I am okay with the TO but no hustle
by DCBruins on Jan 28, 2012 1:07 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Wow. Another slow start?
Box score we have 3 to’s, are shooting less than 33% and they are over 50%
sjh
at least we only spotted them 5
unlike o-state with 9 and stanford with 11 or somethin
To win we are going to have to force 20 TOs
Co is bigger and more athletic

What a loser
It’s 75 degrees outside right now. WTF am I doing here watching this?
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
It's a disease, clearly.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
speaking of disease
im sick so can’t go outside anyway ):
Certainly a day for the beach, weather wise
Yep, Hilgard is right, it is a disease…
formerly bruinhoo
Yeah, good on D and O
He needs to get more consistent
Bruins hot for outside
not much inside unless it is on transition.
We all all reading what you post.
hard to have comments on something we can’t see.
Been a Bruin since birth
I think the size of the buffs
is making it easier for our smaller guards to reach in for the ball
high energy at the pit called the Sports Arena
LOTS of kids and they are loud.
Congrats to whoever thought of bringing them in (I’m going to College?)

Facepalm...
I could be watching GameTracker
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Powell missed a short shot
but makes up with good D on the other end
SPTRs are here
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
I was wondering what happened...
clunking shots or getting burned on D? (following gametracker)
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
oh oh
jerime anderson starting to play like jerime anderson
Bruins are throwing up junk
and not getting back 26-22 UCLA and a TO by CBH.
LOL
I forgot all about that pic, great find.
Is the 2 minutes later picture available?
Or better yet… the video? lol

I'm Chancellor Block
How about that Utah game?
Sounds like we need speed...Where is Stover?
The world wonders
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Hasn't played since he made the mistake
of playing well.
my guess is
CBH sees the buffs making perimeter shots and fouling us inside. Stover’s o is limited so keep josh in
Can Smith play in roller skates?
might get him back in transition faster.

Coaches in suits and tennis shoes, not a great look

The coaches in tennis shoes are traditionally part of that.

would like to see powel & lamb & stover all in
with stover playing F.
That's what I am getting from Yahoo as well
Jerime and Travis Wear the only Bruins with 2 fouls
formerly bruinhoo
Lamb for 3
He looks good when he has time, but not so great when he is rushed.
Powell for 3 to end the half!
good way to end the half, Zeek drives in and draws the defenders, dishes to Powell
Powell for 3! 40 36 good guys half

The numbers show us playing a decent game...
but do they look like they’re playing well?
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
the game is entertaining
defensive mistakes from the usual suspects are keeping the game closer than it should be.
Bruins on fire from 3
I don;t know if they can keep a 6-8 pace into the second half
Jerime was making some bad mistakes on offense
Josh still not tough enough to do anything beyond crazy weak layups.
+1
Although it is like a broken record, Smith really should have some more points. Hopefully he can at least keep the Buffs in foul trouble in the second half.
For those who can't watch
you can imagine we are not playing good defense, giving up a lot of points in transition. Colorado is very active on defense and seems to gamble for steals pretty often. Colorado players are faster and more athletic so they’ll beat us on the run.
Also, Josh Smith is a liability on D, fell down a couple times or was too slow to make a rotation.
it's a picture of the rose bowl

Can we come out with Intensity to start the 2nd half?!?

Big 3 and TO by CO: 47-41 good guys
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
drive and dish seems to be working.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
Stats at half
Both teams shooting well – UCLA at 57.7%, Colorado at 55.6%. Bruins 6-8 from 3-pts. range. Norman Powell 2-2, Tyler Lamb 2-3.

10 point lead. TO CO?
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
One thing I don't like about his offense
is that he can be indecisive. If he gets more aggressive it will help his game.
In this case
appears dribble penetration is breaking them down and we’re effective hitting spots ups and cutters. Looks good right now.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
@UCLAGameday: MBB opens up a 51-41 lead with 15:54 to play.UCLA shooting a 62.5% from the field.

We set up and execute the inbouund but the ref does not turnover the ball?!?
by Bruin Dad and Grad on Jan 28, 2012 2:20 PM PST via mobile reply actions
And he was guarding Dimwiddie 1on1
shocking that he could keep up.
That was a good d sequence -- but with Josh on the floor, we need to play zone
he just can’t hedge and get back into place
sjh
Smith dunks
and steps on the ball to injury himself

Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
I think Powell is getting sucked into the emotions of this game
Goes for the steal and gets called for the foul, Howland is furious
smith's foot landed on the ball
ouch. may have sprained something.

Stover changes the game
He needs more minutes. Teams are scared of him.
Ok, I know that UCLA is known for imploding
but maybe you should REALLY call a timeout and make some adjustments, Colorado?
I'm excited
for the flurry of Howlers tomorrow
LOL
If we continue to be terrible on the road, no home win will save CBH.

Smith is in better shape (still needs work), team chemistry IS improving,
and although I know there are those who expect instant results, I (for one) am pleased to see how this team is developing. The big question in my mind is can they keep growing and building?
Colorado is a different team away from home
and we are a different team at home. I wouldn’t call it progress until we see results on the road.
And progress or no progress, this team is way behind where it could, even should, be.
But, this is a good win, mainly for the activity and the team nature of the play.
Fans giving UCLA a standing ovation going into the timeout. Bruins up 66-49 with 7:32 to play.

What's good about this win
is not that we beat CO (because how good are they, really?), but it’s that the team really seems to be improving, to be sharing and moving the ball more, and playing with emotion and intensity. Smith HAS lost weight, and IF he gets even close to where we expected him to be, we can be a really good team in the 2nd half of the season.
so a bad UCLA team beats one one of (FOUR?!) teams tied for first place in the pac-12
we have such a wacky conference.
Colorado is terrible away
This will make Colorado 3-6 outside of Boulder.
we beat the ( a ) 1st place team in the conference!
We can take this thing.
26 assists!
LJ: 9 assists, 4 turnovers
JA: 8 assists, 3 turnovers
TL: 6 assists, 2 turnovers
NP: 2 assists, 0 turnovers. 2 blocks. (hee hee)
If LJ is pass-first, the others follow and good things happen
Lots of assists, but...
How much of that was unsustainable red-hot 3-point shooting?
good point, but
LJ passed the ball at least 13 times and only took 11 shots (if you count the time he was fouled). If he continues to think pass first the Bruins should continue to improve on offense because IMO, he was the problem before.
Odds
Someone said 8 but I saw 91/2 in the Star Tribune which is Kevin Love’s paper.
Josh Smith
Sadly when you are as big as he and make 371/2% from close in you just aren’t doing what you are supposed to do.
