UCLA Football Recruiting: Simon Goines - A "Mammoth Tackle" from Texas – Commits to Bruins

It's time for another 8 CLAP. Jim Mora's recruiting freight train picked up even more momentum this Monday afternoon when the Bruins received a commitment from a highly coveted Simon Goines from Keller, Texas. Scout.com had the story first. It's confirmed here with the following comment from ESPN's Greg Biggins:

"It was the environment, the coaches and the campus, I just fit in really well there," TX OL Simon Goines on why he's headed to #UCLA

The "mammoth tackle prospect" (as described by Biggins)listed at 6-8, 295 on Scout.com committed to Bruin blue and gold in a closely watched national recruiting battle between UCLA and Missouri. Earlier today Missouri received a commitment from one of the most sought after recruit in the country - WR Dorial Green-Beckham from Springfield, Missouri. DGB's decision seemed to have no impact on Goines.

While Goines is listed a 3 star prospect on Scout.com and Rivals.com, don't be fooled. The kid had offers from over 15 D-1 programs including schools such as Arkansas, West Virginia, Baylor and Mississippi State. What is also interesting is that Goines was also recruited to play hoops by couple of mid major programs such as Western Kentucky and New Hampshire. Missouri apparently also talked to him about potentially playing in its hoops program when he reportedly committed to the Tigers last summer.

At 6-8, 295 Goines may have a good chance to get up to 310/320 range in college. It is kind of fun to think about his upside in Sal Alosi's regimen at UCLA. There seems to be a lot of upside around this kid, which is evident in the boatload of offers from some pretty solid programs.

Star-divide

So Goines is another crucial get for Coach Mora and Adrian Klemm as he will help roundup a pretty solid OL class of Lacy Westbrook, Colby Cyburt, Alex Ceachir and Carl Hulick. BTW Ceachir will reportedly enroll early which should help the staff manage the scholarship numbers for the roster.

Here are some video highlights (no sound) on Goines just mauling people:

Simon Goines Highlights (via 247SportsStudio)

If that wasn't enough for you, here is an extended highlight from his junior season. There is also more film on tWWL.

So with that let's all give Simon a big welcome to Westwood. The week couldn't have gotten off to a better start for UCLA.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATED (N): This doesn't impact Goines but just FYI as noted in the comment thread DGB "commitment" is not a done deal.

Chooooo chooooo!

The train keeps rollin’. Welcome to Westwood, Simon. You’re going to love it in SoCal.

I only have one more wish for this class…one more stud WR.

Adrian Klemm

Where would we be without him? 8 Clap for you good sir! I get the feeling this train will not stop till Wednesday. I expect Mora and Klemm to pull a rabit out. Would love to see a 4 Star WR hop aboard the Bruin bandwagon.

Looks great

IIRC, Goines was formerly a 4* but got slid down to 3* during the post-season reshuffling. The same thing happened to Westbrook, I believe.

Goines looks like he has some nice raw athletic ability. You might get lulled to slip if you pay attention to his upper body, but his feet move pretty quickly. Alosi should be able to do wonders for this guy.

+1

That 270 bench press won’t scare anyone but the kid is mammoth. Alosi needs to get his paws around these kids and when he and Klemm do their thing we may hopefully never look at star ratings the same way again. It sure will be exciting to actually see kids develop themselves in the program.

The trenches

Were where I’ve felt that we’ve been lacking the last few years… oh hell the last decade.

Good to see that we’re shoring up a key issue

Welcome Simon.

I am really liking the way our OL is shaping up. Maybe we can protect all of our new QB’s. I have two more wishes, a WR and Shittu.

Been a Bruin since birth

Almost seems as if they have rigged recruiting...

So, Goines needs to add weight, eh? He needs a weight mentor.

Oh, hell…I can’t go there.

Maybe.......

Josh Smith can act as a weight mentor.

In the highlight video

It looks like most of the plays are against the same team, where he just demolishes the same d-lineman over and over again. Kinda doesn’t seem like a good sampling against multiple opponents.

Sure

but you can’t teach size.

Goines + Alosi + Klemm = international house of pancakes

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Which, you know...isn't the worst thing in the world

I certainly like O-linemen who show absolutely no remorse for annihilating people.

Have some mercy, guys

I’ve been on a diet since January 1. IHOP sounds like heaven at this point.

Great to See the Texas Pipeline Open Again

We’ve had some great players from Texas and I’m glad to see us recruiting there, effectively, again.

Welcome, Simon — you will love Westwood.

BTW — I’m glad I’m not #8 in that video.

Welcome to Westwood

Man its nice to add that kind of size to our line

Another 5* who will leave the program

like the 4 who did the last 2 years…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

He'll leave

Because he’ll get drafted in the NFL. Last OL that was drafted from UCLA? Ogden from the ’90s?

I sure hope these great recruiters -- and their leader -- can coach!

As of now everything looks great. If these players can be coached to their potential, the drought may be over.

Line wins games

Welcome to Westwood, Simon!

I hope he abuses some trogans the way he abused #8 and #58 in the video.

How are they doing it?

It almost seems fishy how much success the new coaching staff is having in such a short amount of time. I am not saying that it is fishy, I am just saying that this kind of recruiting success is a very pleasant surprise.

by RealisticBruinFan on Jan 30, 2012 4:54 PM PST reply actions

It seems like.....

Mora was sign, sealed and delivered months ago and he had time to organize his staff. These guys came out of the box and hit the ground running. it was as if they had a game plan in place months ago.

by Twothphry on Jan 30, 2012 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Mora did have a plan.

And maybe we’ll be grateful that Chianti never did.

Of course, that’s no reason we should keep employing Chianti, either.

It's akin to the Petey hire

Mike Garrett lucked into Carroll, who he got after being turned down by his first three choices. And no one is saying Mike Garrett knew what the f**k he was doing. By all accounts, both Bruin and Trojan, he was a total tool and failure as an AD.

Yes, Carroll’s success was aided by the shady, underhanded things going on at U$C, but it’s the quickest analogy out there: just because you end up hiring someone who turns out to win, doesn’t mean you get the credit for making the hire.

3-star CB de-commits

CB Shannon Edwards, according to his hometown newspaper. Was a recruit from the previous regime (committed in June). He’d been asked to Gray-Shirt and instead de-committed.

The bright side is that the staff is making room for higher-rated kids, and kids that this staff specifically wants to recruit. I didn’t see any offers for Edwards from the schools that our new big-gun recruiters came from (SMU, ASU, UW), so they may have had a different evaluation than the RN regime.

by rich87 on Jan 30, 2012 5:09 PM PST reply actions

That kind of sucks

Don’t get me wrong: this class is fantastic, but by most accounts, Edwards had some freaky elite speed.

Then again, so did Randall Carroll. We saw how that turned out.

Oh well: I wish the kid luck wherever he lands, except when he plays UCLA.

So what happens on national LOI day?

The commits become official?

I know they can back out of a verbal commit, what about after the sign the letter?

LOIs are binding

Recruitment is over for a person that signs it.

by Tydides on Jan 30, 2012 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

They are then bound to the school they sign the LOI with.

If they want to go elsewhere from that point, they have to apply to leave, wait out a year, etc…

it's unfair students must wait out a year (in sports)

when coaches are not penalized at all for switching schools (ahem graham ahem)

[warning: i complain about this a lot]

Our Basketball team could definately use Simon's help.

Seriously though,
He will be a decent backup to Xavier, and who knows,
maybe even play some RT. More depth for the OL.
Great aquisition to develop, and it will be interesting watching him,
and a number of our young recruits, develop under this new staff.
Go Bruins!
