Winthrop found no correlation between the number of recruits with three or more stars on an FBS team and its subsequent winning percentages.

The star ranking system

has been called into question more than a few times in here.

Silly study

In general, teams with 4 & 5 * star players play other teams with 4 & 5* players, and 2* teams play 2* teams. 12-0 5* team has the same winning percentage as a 12-0 2* team, and will have accumulated a similar amount of tds on the road to that undefeated season, but not versus the same level of competition. Thus, studying winning percentages, touchdowns, etc. are meaningless. A better study would be to see how 2* teams fare vs 5* teams.
