All Not Well at Southern Cal: Add Prater to the Transfer List

Well, it seems that not all is well in South Central. Here is the link:

USC Trojans wide receiver Kyle Prater announced Monday evening that he would be transferring from the school.

Prater posted a departure message on his Twitter account.

So now they have lost Prater, Carlyle, and Baxter. Are more to come? We shall see.

My question to those in the know because I am not a numbers/scholie kinda guy. How does this affect their scholarship situation. Don't they only have 15 each to give for something like 3 years? If so, isn't losing these guys extremely bad for their depth considering it doesn't really open up a scholarship for other guys?

Usually it wouldn't be a big deal because you could offer a scholarship to someone to replace the lost player but not in this case right? Would love some clarity. THANKS!

I think the scholarship limitations apply to the whole team, not just on new scholarships. i think they have a 75 scholie cap, so if they can “encourage” players to transfer it can clear space for players that Kiffin may want more than Carroll leftovers

SC doesn't have enough scholarships to sign 15 players

Players low on the depth chart are being encouraged to transfer if they want more playing time. Right now SC needs 4 more scholarships freed up. All of the players are leaving voluntarily, with the exception of Baxter, who was kicked off the team, the rumor being that he wore an ASU shirt to practice the day after the Trojans lost to ASU in Phoenix causing a bit of a ruckus at practice. His general attitude was poor, and he was a “me first” player. The team had a meeting, and decided that the team would be better off without Dylan. He is an incredible talent, but his attitude is off the charts terrible. Its sad really.

The scholarship limit has 2 parts

The 75 scholarship limit is one part of the scholarship-related sanction, and is applicable program-wide for the next 3 years. But the big deal -as muircoach noted – is that the second part of the scholarship-related sanction is that (starting with this class) $C can only offer 15 football scholarships/year for the next 3 years. If after giving out the allowed 15 scholarships U$C is under the 75 scholarship cap, those scholarships will simply go unused.

It's not a hard cap is it?

From what I’ve read, and I could be very wrong here, they can give out EE scholarships next year and count those towards the current class if they don’t give them out.

So, if they only take 10 in this class they can take 20 next year. 15 + 5 EE, as long as they stay under the 75 limit.

Go Bruins!

The 75 cap is the problem

Right now with 12 commits USC is over the 75 limit by 4-6 scholarships. USC needs to pull scholarships, or encourage players to transfer to get under the limit so they can sign the maximum 15 players under the current sanctions. Kyle Prater was 4th or 5th on the depth chart this past season, and was unlikely to get any meaningful playing time. I would guess that Lane Kiffin would grant a release to any backup player, low on the depth chart, that would open up a scholarship for a new recruit coming in. Its a win-win situations for USC and the Prater. Prater gets more playing time without having to sit out a year, and USC gets compliant with the NCAA sanctions.

Prater through his twitter was gracious to USC, the coaches, and the players after his decision to transfer. The insinuation that he is leaving because his relationship with USC has soured is not correct.

Pretty Amazing

Prater was the #2 WR in the country behind Robert Woods in 2010, and he’s 4th or 5th on the depth chart. You really never know how these kids will develop.

Rivals actually had him ahead of Woods

I think if Prater didn’t catch the injury bug he woulda been a major impact player and still think he can be if he ever gets healthy

Speed was the problem

To me Prater was a possesion type of receiver, with the ability to go up high and catch a fade. Why he never fell into that roll was a mystery.

Certainly not an open field guy like Woods or Lee

But he wasn’t slow by any means. Ran good routes to get separation, big guy with a really good hands. I think most people imagined him as a Dwayne Jarrett/ Mike Williams type who is just a monster in the redzone

This sucks! Just saw on twitter that Josh Shaw

will not be coming to UCLA. I was hoping he would cause the guy is legit. Worse, it appears he may be going to U$C. This blows!! Here is the link:

Apparently, he could not be accepted academically. Hopefully this is bogus, but as of now things don’t look good on the Shaw front. Oh well

Scholarship Limits

$C can only bring in 15 players for the current class. They had about 9 slots open for EE (early entry) which would count towards last years class since they didn’t take all 25 last year. However, I believe the window for early entry has closed as the current semester/quarter has begun. So, they now only have 15 scholarships they can take.

But wait, there’s another part of this. They can now only take a maximum of 15 players. However, they still need to remain under the 75 maximum scholarships for the team. Therefore, they need to boot more guys off the team and pull scholarships in order to be able to give out all 15 scholarships.

Haven’t done a ful count of how many scholarship players they have coming back next year but I’m guessing they still need to trim some fat in order to give out the 15 scholarships this year.

My guess is they won’t take all 15 and allow themselves some EE’s for next year when they have a bigger “graduating” ….LOL…LMAO…I can’t believe I just typed that….class.

Go Bruins!

Playing time

or the lack of it is a big reason some of these guys are moving on. They all want to get drafted to play pro ball, but without playing time (and lots of game film for pro scouts to break down), it’s all a pipe dream.
