The UCLA Athletic Department fired off the e-mail pasted below to season parking pass holders for Lot I, which is adjacent to a cozy green area south of the Rose Bowl. It admonishes that the annual college fair will be held in the grassy areas shaded in blue during the Utah and Arizona games--two out of seven home dates this year. Those of you in the know will recognize that this area is populated on football Saturdays by unabashedly faithful Bruin fans, whose tailgate celebrations rival those anywhere in the country. De facto Bruin families across the generations have developed at these gatherings over the years. And, those faithful fans pay plenty for the privilege of being able to buy a parking pass located next to their regular tailgate venue.
Don't read me wrong--I laud the college fair, which encourages kids, particularly from challenged backgrounds, to aspire to a UCLA education. But isn't there a great deal of acreage in the Arroyo Seco? Surely, the great thinkers in Morgan Center could have found a more suitable patch of real estate for the fair. I guess it was easier to say to the Lot I pass holders, "Too bad, and thanks for the money, suckers." If these people were accountable to their customers, they would be among the terminally unemployed.
