UCLA Gymnastics - Sam Peszek out for the Year

Bad news on the Gymnastics front for the #2 pre-season ranked UCLA gymnastics team:

UCLA junior Samantha Peszek will sit out the 2013 gymnastics season after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon in practice on Monday.

Oof.

Peszek will redshirt this year and retain two years of eligibility. Overall, this is a big blow to the gymnastics team - Peszek was a leader and had elite level along with high level NCAA experience, on all four apparatuses. She most likely would have taken on a leadership position this year with the graduation of Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs. I personally was looking forward to Mattie Larson stepping up this year; now the rest of the team will also have to pick up slack with the loss of Peszek's consistent scores.

The first meet of the year is January 6th against Southern Utah.
