UCLA is better than this.....

Hi there. My name is Jeffrey Beentjes and I am a UCLA alumnus (class of 1992) and a frequent BruinsNation lurker but not a long time poster. But I feel like I need to comment on what I saw in Pauley at the Long Beach State game.

At one of the timeouts, the in-arena video scoreboard switched to the MistletowCam - the seasonal version of KissCam - and many happy couples kissed and the audience was happy. And then the MistletowCam was switched onto random players on the Long Beach State bench, who didn't kiss, probably not unexpectedly because how would the cam owner know any two particular Long Beach State players were a couple, and the whole audience in the arena laughed at them.

To get this obvious laughter, implying that the Long Beach State players were weak because they would kiss, was certainly the intent of the folks running this part of the show, but as a gay man it made me feel small, like the university that I graduated from and feel passionate about being a fan of, mocks me because of my sexual orientation.

In this year, where proud UCLA athletics alumni Chris Kluwe and Brandon Ayanbadejo have put everything on the line fighting for my right to be viewed as a complete person, capable of lifelong love and commitment against bigots who would deny that, I am extremely disappointed that some Dan Guerrero subordinate at Pauley could proclaim that this is not UCLA's view.

Just typing this right now, it made me cry. And I am one of those butch men who never cry about anything.

This needs to stop.
