UCLA Football Recruiting: Javon Williams is a Bruin, Fun Continues on National Signing Day

Jordan Payton was the first rocket boost for Bruin Nation this morning. Now the NSD festivities just got another huge boost in Bruin Nation with the commitment of WR Javon Williams! Just a little while ago Javon picked up the UCLA hat (over Arkansas and Oregon) with a loud cheer from his family.

Javon is another huge get for this year's recruiting class. WRs were an area of need and as the recruiting period went on, it looked as though we'd be thin at that position. But this staff just does not quit. Now with the commitments of Payton and Williams we are looking good. We may not be done yet though as UCLA is still in the running for Randall Goforth and may be more!

A 6'5" wide receiver out of Arizona, Javon comes from Chandler HS, the same high school as Brett Hundley. He is touted as a "red zone weapon", and the football gods know that we need one badly! He's a 3-star recruit on Scout and a 4-star on Rivals (who compares him to former Trogan Mike Williams), with great size and good speed.

So let's all give a massive collective 8-clap for Javon Williams and welcome him to UCLA!

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Williams was down to choosing between Arkansas and UCLA. If he was recruited so heavily by Bobby Petrino, you have to think this kid could be something special in a spread oriented offensive scheme. He seemed destined to Arkansas until he visited UCLA on January 27th. Coach Mora's staff was simply relentless, I love the attitude of not giving up on any recruit and of addressing an area of need, even at such a late stage.

You can keep tracking the signees on the official site here. Also, keep eyes on the lists on BRO and BruinBlitz.

Let's continue the fun in a fresh open thread.

Recruiting High School team mates

Is a postive in my opinion. Especially QB’s and Receivers. Hundley and Williams already have a familiarity and comfortability with each other which will benefit them on the field. Can’t wait for spring ball. Go Bruins!!!

Injuries really hindered both of those guys to really make that connection they had in high school. If both guys would have stayed healthy who knows what kind of QB TE threat they could have been.

2009 was like this to me

watching the flood of SC targets commit to us on ESPNU (Riley, Carroll, Presley, etc). Unfortunately…that was a reminder that you don’t win championships on February 1st. But damn do we look good right now

by bucknellbruin on Feb 1, 2012 11:24 AM PST up reply actions

No, it doesn't

Actually, Neuheisel’s first signing days were more exciting because we hadn’t been relevant on NSD in years because of Dorrell. Now that Neu has done it recently, it doesn’t have the novelty factor.

by Tydides on Feb 1, 2012 11:33 AM PST up reply actions

The day doesn't feel different

but the staff does…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Feb 1, 2012 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

I even disagree with that

We were plenty excited for the Neuheisel, Chow, Walker combo before we figured out that Chianti forced that to happen and destroyed any real chance at having a cohesive coaching staff.

by Tydides on Feb 1, 2012 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

That's exactly what I mean

ok maybe the feeling is the same, but the way the staff was put together is completely different. So in retrospect, it’s the same feeling, but a bit more reassuring ;)

you know sometimes when you have a choice between 2 things, so you flip a coin, and as soon as it lands for one choice you know instantly in your gut the other one is what you wanted – when it came down to UW or UCLA maybe thats what happened – as soon as he committed maybe he realized it wasn’t what he really wanted, ya know?

by dcbruingirl on Feb 1, 2012 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

Not necessarily

Number of kids will be enrolled early. Some kids have left the program due to suspension/discipline issues. There will also be natural attrition due to injuries/transfer that is common place in football (happened at UCLA and other places before and will happen again).

Teams always find a way to make it work. This isn’t a concern

by Waitingfornumber12 on Feb 1, 2012 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

Watson might be one of those

kindly asked to look elsewhere. Combs is def. coming.

by BillytheSid on Feb 1, 2012 11:34 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe Combs decided not to take a schollie. You never know.

If we signed all of our verbals, we would have 26 LOI’s. Room for 2 more.

If Combs refused a schollie (no idea if he would), we’d have room for 3.

I read that too.

I’m not implying that he’s not coming. Maybe he’s refusing a LOI.

If Michael Roll can do it

so can Justin Combs!

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Funny note on Jordan Payton

Check out his twitter pic (I’m assuming he updated it last night)

Guess he must have spent some time admiring the pic and caught himself reading the quote below the TV instead of the one on it.

Gaah!

Being at work today is not cool.

Would love to see this.

Comparing Leach's recruiting at WSU to other schools ...

… is somewhat apples to oranges. Pullman is a tough place to recruit.

by Nestor on Feb 1, 2012 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

and actually

Leach has been getting some big props from Biggens et al for the guys he’s bringing in.

by Odysseus on Feb 1, 2012 11:52 AM PST up reply actions

It's going to be TTU redux

unless he gets a good defense. Playing in Pullman is going to suck for years to come regardless.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

and by that I mean for the visiting teams

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

One note folks

Do not share links of streams that are not lawful. We will keep hiding any comments sharing links to streams. We can’t do it.

I had a meeting for 2 hours and I came back to this!

Jordan Payton, Javon Williams, and Kenny Walker!!

Wow. I am so pleased with this class.

As Nestor said, everything else from here on is just bonus!

You better go to another 2 hr meeting

if you want us to pull in some more top recruits

by Bruinator on Feb 1, 2012 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

i haven't been this excited since..

2008 – top 10 class
2009 – top 5 class
2010 – top 8 class

we can recruit…but can we develop?!

by uclarob on Feb 1, 2012 11:53 AM PST reply actions

You know DG is already writing his next blog to ......

….take full credit for this hire and class of recruits.

It was so disingenuous

He says “this is why we hired Coach Mora, because we knew he would bring this kind of recruiting blablabla” or something to that effect. If that is the case, why the F did he go after Petersen, Sumlin and Golden first?

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

He is such an F-stick.

The fact that he gets paid so much and does very little…turns my gut.

plus can we keep those kids in school...

recruiting stars are meaningless if they are kicked out for breaking rules / laws.

by VeniceBruin on Feb 1, 2012 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

+1

Getting the kids as we’ve seem is only the first step, as seen before some attrition is expected but we want some new Bruin stars to be born!

OL is in good shape, we have solid qb recruits, depth, etc, need some great years!

First NSD as an adult!

Judge: Mr. BPD, How does your client plead to the charges?

Me: (Text from friend that J.Payton flipped) Sorry your honor, I haven’t spoken with him yet. My I have moment…

God, this is my favorite holiday of the year and I have to spend it in court. Someone send me back to college and law school where I could just play the signings in class!

Nah

you should say that about Shittu. He’d be a bigger get at this point.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Sorry for the misspelling of Marcus Rios & Kenny Orjioke earlier. Got a little quick on the trigger finger!
