MUST WATCH VIDEO: Rick Neuheisel & Jim Mora Talk UCLA Recruiting on CBSSports
Bumped. In case you have not seen this yet, this is MUST WATCH TV for all UCLA alums, students and fans. The interaction between Coaches Jim Mora and Rick Neuheisel is pretty amazing. It tells us a lot about these two guys. It is too bad Neuheisel's career didn't work out as a UCLA head coach but the way he has handled himself after he was done as UCLA HC will enhance his wonderful legacy as a player. It also didn't hurt the fact that he did help this program by elevating our recruiting in recent years. As Mora is off to a great start we hope he can finally translate the recruiting success into on field one next season. - BN Eds.
Jim Mora was on CBSSports earlier today to talk about Signing Day, and there was a great interaction between him and RN:
UCLA coach Mora Jr. on recruiting (via CBSSports)
A couple of the key quotes after the jump.
Host: "How does signing day compare with anything else you’ve ever been through, like NFL draft day, say?"
CJM: "Well I think Rick can probably attest to this, it’s a lot different, you know, when you’re in a draft room, you’re picking the players, and on Signing Day, theyre kinda picking you, and so, theres a little more anxiety."
CJM: "I just wanna give a special thanks to Rick for setting the table for us here. And Rick, I…was putting your picture up, where you wouldn’t put it because you were too modest, I'm looking at it right now, #10, peeling back to rip one down the field at the Rose Bowl."
CRN: "Well I hope I completed it to the right colored jersey."
CJM: "Well I'm sure you did, and while we’re at it, your son is just one fantastic kid, and I'm really honored that he chose to stay here and play for UCLA."
CRN: "Well I'm thrilled that he’s there and he tells me everyday that things are going in the right direction. I'm happy for you and the class you brought in, that’s exactly what UCLA needed. I know it’s hard work to get it done."
There's a lot more from this interview, it's really worth it to watch through the whole thing.

All Class by both guys
Loved the exchange there. Rick definitely left us in a better position than when he took over.
Go Bruins!

Great stuff q. Let’s recommend this up!

Great post Q!
I love the part where Rick asks him what the challenges were when he took over. CJM said “aw, come Rick”, as in, dude, you know what a clusterfuck this place is!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Yeah, that was my favorite part as well
Figured it was best heard than read.
That was hilarious ...
he almost said “Chianti Dan.”

Thank you for posting
I was looking for that earlier this afternoon.
Rick already proved he's a Bruin for life...
… but man, to have ANYBODY be in this position and carry out it with dignity and class is mind-blowingly INCREDIBLE.

Indeed
So proud to have him as an alum. Hope he does really well in broadcasting. It’s a great gig and a lot less stress, after all!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Absolutely!
I was so sorry he couldn’t pull it off because you just won’t find a better Bruin than Neu. Better things ahead for him!
Can you image
Lameny acting like this, on either side of the equation? But then again, I don’t know why any network would hiring that snarky personality as a commentator.
CRN is definitely a class act
I am proud of the way he has handled himself during this entire demeaning process.
I was very impressed with Mora as well.
I’m also just a little curious how Howland would act if put in the exact same situation.
Howland is not a Bruin
So it is a different situation.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
We should probably dial back the anti-Howland rhetoric
If you feel he’s not the right coach for UCLA, that’s fine. But nowhere have I seen Howland act without class, and nowhere have I felt he’s represented the Four-Letters in a classless way.
Moreover, by the same standard that defines Howland as “not a Bruin”, our intergalactic treasure was not a Bruin, but a Sycamore. It’s a poor qualifier.
Anyone who represents our school with dignity and respect is, in my mind, a member of the Bruin family.

+1
Howland is all class. He may not be a Bruin or a great HC (or fit here anymore) but no need to bash his character.
Dump Dan!

"not a class act"
seemed to imply that Howland was not a class act. I don’t like his coaching style, don’t think he belongs here as the HC but I respect what he’s done in the past and “not a class act” seemed to come out of left field.
Dump Dan!

Seriously
The comments above are hilarious. People are so touchy to protect a coach who is going to miss tourney for the 2nd time in 3 years.
disagree
we all strive to keep posts on this blog respectful and classy. sometimes there are misunderstandings (in this case, LA Bruin’s reply to tassers’ comment), so they need to be addressed. CBH’s class has never been in doubt, as far as I can tell.
anyways, go bruins!

No worries, Nestor
I’m no Howler. I understand its time for him to go too.

not a bruin?
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
Seriously guys?
All I’m saying is, it’s a different situation, having the ex-coach talk to the new coach, when the ex-coach is also an alum and a program hero. I don’t think anyone should be surprised that Neuheisel is classy and supportive of the new coach. I’m not saying at all that Howland would not be the same way, in fact he has proven time and again to be classy in public (see support of Jrue Holiday). You look at a guy like Lavin, and he never missed a chance to somehow throw in subtle jabs at UCLA fans when he was a commentator. I don’t think Howland would ever be that way.
And I’m sorry, but Despite that, he is still nowhere near the vicinity of the neighborhood of the galaxy of John Wooden when it comes to Bruinhood, even if Coach was not a grad either. John Wooden IS UCLA Basketball, if not UCLA. Howland is not even close to that.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
I hope Rick can stay in the picture in some form.
I have always liked him, as a player and person. He will always rank high in my book.
Been a Bruin since birth
Thank you
for cleaning it up mods. I’ll learn how to format one of these days :-)
If Mora and these coaches can coach
as well they recruit, I CANNOT WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER TO GET HERE!!!
Congrats to CJM and his staff for a stellar recruiting effort.
Well, winning is everything !
By this time next year, or perhaps even sooner, we will know if coach Mora is the real deal.
My take on this great exchange between the coaches
CJM and xCRN are two coaches who’ve been through the trenches. They both know the euphoria and excitement of being hired as a new coach, as well as the lows and dejection when you get fired from that job.
When that happens a few times, that process has to humble you as a coach… maybe it makes you realize that in most cases, the coach who you’re replacing was probably also a pretty damn good football coach like you thought you were before you got fired from your previous job. Also makes you realize that just cuz you’re now in the driver’s seat, it doesn’t mean that the guy before you was a bum, but only that things didn’t align for them how they hoped and worked for.
I hope CJM can translate these great moves into actual football success. The vibe after a great signing day is sky-high, now it’s on Alosi to get these kids into shape and then the coaching staff to plan the right scheme for these kids going into Spring Practice!

Ask for seconds and get the recipies...
Now, that’s knowing which side of the bread is buttered!
Everyone can see RN is a class act.
And I agree, especially when you have to interview the person who just took over your job. However, I thought CJM initiated the kind words, making it easier for RN to respond. I also liked how CJM talked about not liking the term “recruitment” but prefer to call it “relationship building.” Like RN said, he is a quick study, and that makes me very optimistic about the future of UCLA football. I really think it is in the right hands, even thought initially I didn’t like CJM (his records and lack of college experience)

Where's Los Angeles?
According to the map at the beginning of this video, the CBS morons think it’s somewhere between San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria.
Maybe they were thinking of U.C. Los Alamos?
Finding Los Angeles on a map is hard.

RN for...
RNn should be UCLAs next AD…no questions asked WOW what a classy guy!!
That thought has been
percolating through my mind for weeks now. Knowing firsthand what harm a bozo AD can wreak upon an entire university, not just athletics, Neu would bring the right perspective along with his unsurpassed love for UCLA.
He has the passion
but I do think we need someone with organizational skills, to put together a good staff, and business sense, to negotiate with adidas, TV, the conference, etc. Someone who wouldn’t get bamboozled by, say, Jerry Jones…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Neu might be too nice for AD
We need a bully for an AD.
No, not belly. Bully.

zing!
Several candidates have “Cross(ed)” my mind just like “Kiki” used to cross over defenders with the jab step. Perhaps another “Gene B” could change the apathetic culture that another Gene B has instilled.

Work Wasserman in there and you’ll have it.

That's a great suggestion
I had never considered before. Young, smart, loves UCLA and has many football/entertainment connections. Any of these candidates would build upon UCLA’s international brand.

FWIW, Neu does have a law degree

I take it
that was the beer talking, and not the mathematics…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
They are inseparable
(% content EtOH) x (total volume)/(total body weight) x (EtOH metabolism rate/hr) + baseline mood level as a Bruin fan = Number of beers necessary to tolerate Chianti Dan for one more minute.
The answer turns out to be somewhere near infinity.
