Game Thread for UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies
UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies, Feb 2, 2012 6:00 PM PST
UCLA takes on the first place Washington Huskies on ESPN at 6 p.m. PST with Dave Pasch and Dan Dakich calling the action. Washington will be loud and the Huskies' Coach Lozerno Romar will be coaching his 500th game tonight. Washington sharpshooter C.J. Wilcox is hurting and not practicing but will play tonight. Joshua Smith returns home to his home state and the likely loud crowd that may focus on him.
UCLA is 1-4 on the road in conference this year and has not beat a Division I team this season outside the Los Angeles area and has not won at Washington since 2004. The official preview is here. The Huskies' preview is here.
Go Bruins!

Come on in, everyone!
UCLA up 15-12

oregon state broke a streak a few weeks ago
when we lost to them in Corvallis
Time for us to break a streak today
And here I thought
he was made of donuts or double-doubles!
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
cos our students want to be together
behind the basket
Anyone notice where their student section is?
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
That might not be our fault
You’re not supposed to have the student section behind the benches, and TV likes to have the benches in the frame. UW got grandfathered in for some stupid reason.
Because their AD had nads and said we're keeping it this way?
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Might be Pac-10/12, I know it is not an NCAA rule
UVa’s new arena has part of the student section directly behind the opponent’s bench, for example.

These refs hate Smith
When he is away from the ball they grab at him to tire and annoy him. Even if he isn’t near the basket or the basketball, he is being hacked
Yeah but you got to know who you are
THere is NO way Gaddy can knock him down, the refs know that. He is not going to get that call.
Of course they can't knock him down.
They aren’t running into him or anything. But you can’t just grab someone’s jersey and yank, no matter who you are
I think it is just because he is hustling
He is really trying out there
He started around 380ish
He is now around 350 – around where he was at the end of last season. He should have been in low 300 at the start of this season. He should try to get himself to 290s to start next year if he wants to have a shot at the pros.
Oh really?
That is cool. Where’d you get that?
David having a really good start to the game
8 and 4 so far and hasn’t gotten beat on defense as much as I expected against an athletic Udub team
The athletic players are more the guards and wings
That is where we will have problems.
Howland liberally substituting keeping our legs fresh - good stuff
got to have fresh legs to stay with those Wash athletes
Great news for our Bruins Hockey Team
The suspension for the paperwork error was lifted, in favor of a more appropriate punishment (to be determined). The Bruins will get to face the hated trogans this weekend after all.
Check skycam’s update here

Freaking commentators are rertarded
You can’t run into a standing smith and expect a foul
he got beat for sure
but the foul was BS.

Pac 12 refs like calling fouls
Do they need contacts or just like the sound of their own whistle
Wear makes floater small easy jump shot
28 26 Wasthington
And they are still a great team.
Well, if you are considering them against pac 12 teams haha
And they are still a great team.

Easily the most enjoyable UCLA basketball game this season. I'm very proud of the team's effort and, for the most part, execution thus far. Feed Travis, he's got the hot hand.
by HighDesertBruin on Feb 2, 2012 6:49 PM PST via mobile reply actions
He is EXTREMELY streaky
If he is on, he is one of the best in the country. If he is off, omg
I thought he was up to 40% from three in PAC 12
before this game
he's got potential to be a shooter
IIRC coming out of high school he was touted as someone who could shoot

Slightly OT - Recomendations
I’m staying near the UCLA campus on a business trip. Any of you have a recommendation on where to go to watch the rest of the game and get something to eat?
wow great
We aren’t doing anything on this offensive possession. Wouldn’t be surprised by a 35 second violation
Actually UW is a stupid team
I think we could call a play for a good shot
Was gonna Fanshot
took a CPR class today with a football coach from Bishop Gorman. He said that as far as he knows Shabazz still has us on top of his list. Again, for what it’s worth
Josh looks great tonight
he had a drop and a missed lay up that i remember but his game looks good. He’s been really active
They can hit a lot of there outside shots.
But it seems they miss so many by the basket. The good thing is that they a lot of the time put it back in. But still
We over penetrate.
We need to wait for Josh and get it to him.
What the heck is wrong with Jones?
He sat back with 8 seconds left and stood there
doesn't work
do you need to be a cable subscribber?
by UCLA_beer&mathematics on Feb 2, 2012 7:00 PM PST up reply actions
no they've changed it
you can’t access it unless you have certain cable subscriptions
by bucknellbruin on Feb 2, 2012 7:03 PM PST up reply actions
For online access you have to have ATT. Not sure who else has a contract with ESPN
Been a Bruin since birth
Comcast must have one
because I can see the game on my laptop (though it’s on TV here, too)
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
The list shows Time Warner and Bright House, but I have heard
subscribers complain that they couldn’t access it. HUH

by UCLA_beer&mathematics on Feb 2, 2012 7:08 PM PST up reply actions
I think I'll turn it back off. We have totally sucked on offense and defense since I turned it on. I'm a jinx.
Josh is really playing well tonight
Oh, what we could be…
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Smith is playing Amazing
Only reason we are in
UW has a lot to do with that
They’re really sloppy and undisciplined. It’s like watching a Lavin team.
What kind of english was on the ball
from the angle and where it hit backboard, it should have gone over the rim.
by Gen2Bruin1987 on Feb 2, 2012 7:06 PM PST up reply actions
Bull Sh
Are you kidding me, we can’t catch a break
wtf
UW just strikes me as a really selfish team. They only pass when they absolutely have to.
Smith is player of the half.
THey are poorly coached but well recruited
Wroten could start anywhere 1-3 for us.
Did you see that guy on washington?
He was sitting there hitting the ball so we couldn’t get it in.
Be in shape, play with a drive
Win the Pac-12. Make tens of millions.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
If Stover wasn't in, Ross would have gone to the hoop - instead he had to take a really
tough shot. I hope CBH noticed that.
No. I suggest more minutes for Stover, and avoiding too much Wear at the 5
because with our guards, Wash is going to penetrate a LOT, and neither Wear will intimidate those guys going to the hoop.
Zeek sometimes will
He is extremely inconsistent. Sometimes he is selfish and stupid
You know, Josh gets a lot of bad rep for his work ethic
But I think we are all saying things without all facts (including me). We have no clue what is going on with him and how his life is like. He could be on meds that do this to him. We will never know. It is not like they would come out and say that
If he needed meds that made him gain weight
Then he wouldn’t be losing weight now because he would still need to take them.
You can very well lose weight on certain meds
But it makes it damn well hard. Have you known a lot of people with anti-depression meds that are heavy? It is terrible trying to lose weight, but possible to do it slowly
I'm no doctor
But he came in way heavier than he ended last season. This tells me that he is in the process of playing his way into shape, which means he was doing much less than he is doing now over the offseason.
You are right
But all I am saying, is that it could be a lot harder for him than people think. It sometimes isn’t just a tiny bit of exercise and diet to lose a lot of weight
Or he could just be unmotivated
And irresponsible with the weight of this year’s team on his shoulders.
I despise Duke
but I watched them play Va Tech earlier tonight, and what struck me more than anything was how well they finished at the basket. Their bigs make layups, whether they’re contested or not.
If we make half of our shots from the paint this game, we’re up 10. The amount of points we give away because we miss gimme’s is absurd
yep
i know. But it’s quite a contrast watching this game after watching a Duke game

Stream?
My favorite site was taken down by ICE. Anyone have a stream, please?
13-9
Can't say names...
but if you google “stream sports online” and go to the second link, you’ll be happy.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
I get REALLY frustrated with him this time
But finally he does well with this
I like the effort but
We need to close and win a road game. I don’t want to be the skunk at the garden party but we need to win this game, a close loss is completely meaningless. UW is a poorly coached but talented team. CBH has the team he wants, he needs to win with it tonight.
We really do need to win this tonight...
I’m getting really tired of all the moral victories against Stanford etc. But, I do have to say, it is nice no matter what to see us trying out there. Win or lose (extremely disappointing at the latter) if we play like this I will watch the games I have tickets to.
The effort is definitely a step up from the apathy seen with several individuals before
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Losing is Losing
this game is winable, and if we don’t, I don’t care how close we are — it’s a very bad loss.
We are only shooting 41%
sjh
Hate to say it, but talent could count for the few buckets that could make a difference
Look at that last bucket, Howland had the defensive substitution in that he wanted. The Wash guards and wings wanted nothing to do with Stover, so Ross hits a prayer fall-back 20 ft jumper, BANKED in. All I can say, is wtf.
Only 5 TO's?
That is surprising, but I feel as if some of those layups should be TO’s
Jones
He can’t be the best player on offense and cover Wroten
Lot of fouls called by refs agian
Right now, both sides
*crowd* BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
He only hit him 12 times. And only 5 of them were hard!
right on cue
2 off rebs and a foul under the rim
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
On this team, the "goat treatment" means they get playing time
it means that they have the picture of cbh and the goat that the brick guy passed down
sjh
Yeah, I'm aware of that
It’s just that timeouts are a stoppage of play. Cheering about stopping the action seemed funny to me.
I thought the bench would be key
Oh wait, did not pick Smith though
That one still wasn't easy.
Just a great play in my opinion
I don't want us to play zone.
If we can do man to man, we should stay it.
Basically a lay-up drill for Washington

Speaks volumes of his character.
I am pissed off at Jones
He flops and then complains for the call
Will be interesting to see how he holds up down the stretch

Good news
A city councilman in downtown Denver who is originally from CA has made it his mission to get In-n-Out here.
Best. Politician. Ever.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
The best of luck on that one.
They are really picky on their franchises. Hope they pull it off.
Been a Bruin since birth
They don't franchise
Still family owned. They only build within a one day shipping distance from a distributor. So the councilman is pushing to get a distributor here.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
If they franchised
I would have opened one here 10 years ago and retired to luxury 8 years ago.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
The ESPN announcers are really really bad. Complaining about pick-up games as a Pac-12 game?
hyberbole?
Sore that the Pac-12 contract is with Fox?
There is nothing in it for them to hype the Pac.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Not really
Some of these turnovers have truly been terrible. Pickup game terrible. They have a point.
wash is horrible, but plenty of those TOs have been due to our active D
but, Wash has been HORRIBLE with the ball
Was that a good call by refs?
I’m not sure who that was out on. One thing I do have to say, is that the refs aren’t being one sided. They are doing a shitty job, but they aren’t being one sided
Psh. I'm not even listening to the announcers.
It’s too loud in my house, and I think I prefer it that way.
Why does Josh not have the ball after 45 seconds of time?
But still, nice 3
Remember UW players thought this game was going to be boring
They’re just turning it over frequently to keep things “interesting”
what the hell was zeek doing?
how does he not catch that???
this team is growing on me
when smith plays like this, they’re damn good. now we see why we were top 25 preseason
We were expecting Smith to be even lighter than he is now
At the start of this season. The whole year could have been different.
if reeves had a brain, if if if...
yes, i agree, we should be a top 15 team if everything played out like it could/should have
Seeing the Hec Ed crowd get excited there
with them right on top of the court and all the seats at a steep rake just pisses me off because we’re rebuilding Pauley and won’t get anyone that close to the action.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I tweeted my followers to ask which I should take
Just put the students behind one backboard
Student solidarity. Plus how are opponents gonna shoot free throws. GOOD LUCK!
/BARF
Imagine how great it'd be to be at Pauley
if we had a good team on the floor and the seats as close to the floor as Hec Ed. Too bad we’ll never ever see that. Not even $130m+ later.

if Josh can foul out one of their players..
Come on Josh, imagine how many fouls you’d draw if you were in shape!
I know it doesn’t happen overnight, but I hope it’s a persistent effort for the next year (sorry Tony Parker, maybe no playing time if you come here)
II love Josh's intensity tonight.
Maybe we should play all of our “home” games in Washington from now on.
Wear misses the dunk but makes the layup
Hurts himself
Prob twisted left ankle
came down on a foot. Immed signaled to come out, but then was walking with a limp. Hope he can walk it off.

nice move by josh
now I'm really really worried.

Great job UCLA. We are playing terribly.

greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Agree Lamb fought hard
Just could not hit a shot
yeah - pissed at the "no heart" comments
is someone reading their minds and not watching – these guys are playing their asses off – but at some point, you start running on fumes
We only played seven tonight
You play seven guys on the road you’re going to be tired at the end.

I like these kids they fight
I hate the PAC 12 ref
Really Dont understand
Why Powell didn’t pass it to Smith
That's what wealways do when playing for one shot
and it usually burns us, too
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Terrence Ross is really good and we suck against the zone
Theres the recap
That's on Howland
Manage the clock by giving up all offence. Sigh.
Who else should it be on?
Serious question for you. Not just being snarky.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Because he played not to lose for the last 8 minutes
Because he left weapons in the bench like stover.
20 sec and a TO and didnt call it to set up?

Howland doesn't know what to do

+1
This was not on the refs. This was a collapse by our team.
Howland says earlier this week it has been weeks since we practiced zone
which means we’re also not practicing offense against a zone and then we go out and look clueless against the zone. Shocking, ain’t it?
Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I tweeted my followers to ask which I should take
Now it would be nice to see that effort in any other game this year
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Screw his home town
Why doesn’t he play EVERY game as though he cares about his career, his pride, and his TEAM?! I can no longer support Ben Howland.

Tom Haverford
Would have officiated a better game
Down the stretch, the refs did everything they could to give the game to UW. It’s still no excuse for the meltdown at the end. I hate watching these type of games. Even with a ten point lead I had a sick feeling that we would let off the gas and lose…

Really, we don’t make this stuff up.
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
As soon as the guy guarding Smith got four fouls...
…we stopped sending the ball in to Smith. Becuase I guess trying to foul out a Washington player would be rude.

There's probably gonna be some morons
Tooting the moral victory horn. Save it. This was a terrible loss.
Bye Howland
You inexcusably blew 2008 Final Four with NBA All-Star level talent on the team and have been riding on the early success far too long. Time to get a legit coach who competes year in and year out.
We had them on the ropes the whole time !!!!!!!!!
And then we just buckled under and GAVE THE GAME AWAY !!!!!!!!!
Jesus f * Christ !!!!!!!
If Howland wins then he is the best coach ever. If he loses the game, he needs to be fired
I hate this __
Howland being 2-200 against UW in Seattle would have made him the best coach ever?
Pass me some of what you’re smoking.
Howland should have learned by now that playing not to lose
(as he did for the last 8 minutes) is not a winning recipe.
with 10 point lead they went into zone and we looked clueless
and it appeared we were in “slow down” offense with way too much time left in the game.
We lost our aggression and that cost us. The game is 40 minutes, not 35.
sjh
Agree...the 3/4 full court press after made UW baskets took us out of synch.
Also, if Josh Smith did not have to be subbed every 3-4 minutes…and be left in to dominate an inferior interior defense, then we might have had more success going to the ‘well’ more! JS could have had 30+
This game is not on Josh in any way
he played much longer stretches and more minutes than usual. He was running down the court on D. I’ll bet he played far more minutes that any game this season.
We had terrible shooting from T. Wear, Lamb, Powell and most of the game Zeek,
Zeek played a lot of minutes, probably because Powell was sick. Jerime, at the end of the game made some stupid mistakes.
Smith was our player of the game.
sjh
I stated earlier that Josh was UCLA's POG...
I just could imagine a “really in-shape Josh” would be much more dominant, thus allowing longer stretches of time before he was winded…and maybe less frequent Howland TO’s. Yes, the offensive fouls and crappy mid-air desperation passes did us in!
We lost to a guy that has NOOOOOOO CLASS. God damn it
No, Daniel Fox, You got it wrong, for Christ sake.
It’s the way Howland lost games he NEVER, NEVER for one f **** moment should have lost that we are so f * pissed. UNDERSTAND ????
Disclaimer - Daniel Fox is not me.
I don’t think Coach Howland should have been coaching this game (or any game after the disasters early in the season. Firing Coach Howland mid season would have taken courage, and we know neither courage nor competence exists anywhere in Morgan Center. (I think it’s too early to decide whether our new football staff will cower at the sight of Chianti Dan.)
Coach Howland has lost the privilege of coaching teams with the four letters. I love the man, but I detest the coach.
But Chaminade is a really, really, really good DII school!
