Game Thread for UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies

UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies, Feb 2, 2012 6:00 PM PST

Here's to hoping we see a motivated Joshua Smith #34 of the UCLA Bruins tonight. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

UCLA takes on the first place Washington Huskies on ESPN at 6 p.m. PST with Dave Pasch and Dan Dakich calling the action. Washington will be loud and the Huskies' Coach Lozerno Romar will be coaching his 500th game tonight. Washington sharpshooter C.J. Wilcox is hurting and not practicing but will play tonight. Joshua Smith returns home to his home state and the likely loud crowd that may focus on him.

UCLA is 1-4 on the road in conference this year and has not beat a Division I team this season outside the Los Angeles area and has not won at Washington since 2004. The official preview is here. The Huskies' preview is here.

Go Bruins!

Time to break a streak

Anyone notice where their student section is?

greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com

by gbruin on Feb 2, 2012 6:34 PM PST reply actions

That might not be our fault

You’re not supposed to have the student section behind the benches, and TV likes to have the benches in the frame. UW got grandfathered in for some stupid reason.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 6:36 PM PST up reply actions

Because their AD had nads and said we're keeping it this way?

Might be Pac-10/12, I know it is not an NCAA rule

UVa’s new arena has part of the student section directly behind the opponent’s bench, for example.

These refs hate Smith

When he is away from the ball they grab at him to tire and annoy him. Even if he isn’t near the basket or the basketball, he is being hacked

by Daniel Fox on Feb 2, 2012 6:41 PM PST reply actions

Yeah but you got to know who you are

THere is NO way Gaddy can knock him down, the refs know that. He is not going to get that call.

Of course they can't knock him down.

They aren’t running into him or anything. But you can’t just grab someone’s jersey and yank, no matter who you are

He is now around 350 – around where he was at the end of last season. He should have been in low 300 at the start of this season. He should try to get himself to 290s to start next year if he wants to have a shot at the pros.

Great news for our Bruins Hockey Team

The suspension for the paperwork error was lifted, in favor of a more appropriate punishment (to be determined). The Bruins will get to face the hated trogans this weekend after all.

by gbruin on Feb 2, 2012 7:04 PM PST up reply actions

You know, Josh gets a lot of bad rep for his work ethic

But I think we are all saying things without all facts (including me). We have no clue what is going on with him and how his life is like. He could be on meds that do this to him. We will never know. It is not like they would come out and say that

by Daniel Fox on Feb 2, 2012 7:04 PM PST reply actions

If he needed meds that made him gain weight

Then he wouldn’t be losing weight now because he would still need to take them.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

You can very well lose weight on certain meds

But it makes it damn well hard. Have you known a lot of people with anti-depression meds that are heavy? It is terrible trying to lose weight, but possible to do it slowly

by Daniel Fox on Feb 2, 2012 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

I'm no doctor

But he came in way heavier than he ended last season. This tells me that he is in the process of playing his way into shape, which means he was doing much less than he is doing now over the offseason.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

You are right

But all I am saying, is that it could be a lot harder for him than people think. It sometimes isn’t just a tiny bit of exercise and diet to lose a lot of weight

by Daniel Fox on Feb 2, 2012 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

Or he could just be unmotivated

And irresponsible with the weight of this year’s team on his shoulders.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

I despise Duke

but I watched them play Va Tech earlier tonight, and what struck me more than anything was how well they finished at the basket. Their bigs make layups, whether they’re contested or not.

If we make half of our shots from the paint this game, we’re up 10. The amount of points we give away because we miss gimme’s is absurd

by bucknellbruin on Feb 2, 2012 7:06 PM PST reply actions

We go up soft

It’s been a problem for a long time.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

yep

i know. But it’s quite a contrast watching this game after watching a Duke game

by bucknellbruin on Feb 2, 2012 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

I like the effort but

We need to close and win a road game. I don’t want to be the skunk at the garden party but we need to win this game, a close loss is completely meaningless. UW is a poorly coached but talented team. CBH has the team he wants, he needs to win with it tonight.

by DCBruins on Feb 2, 2012 7:13 PM PST reply actions

We really do need to win this tonight...

I’m getting really tired of all the moral victories against Stanford etc. But, I do have to say, it is nice no matter what to see us trying out there. Win or lose (extremely disappointing at the latter) if we play like this I will watch the games I have tickets to.

by Daniel Fox on Feb 2, 2012 7:15 PM PST up reply actions

No moral victories

(To everyone else) Don’t even try to bring that in here if we lose.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:15 PM PST up reply actions

Losing is Losing

this game is winable, and if we don’t, I don’t care how close we are — it’s a very bad loss.

We are only shooting 41%

by Class of 66 on Feb 2, 2012 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

UW may be tied for first in the conference, but this conference blows, and they’re not that good that we can write this off as “oh well, we were competitive”.

by Tydides on Feb 2, 2012 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

Hate to say it, but talent could count for the few buckets that could make a difference

Look at that last bucket, Howland had the defensive substitution in that he wanted. The Wash guards and wings wanted nothing to do with Stover, so Ross hits a prayer fall-back 20 ft jumper, BANKED in. All I can say, is wtf.

by mplsbruin on Feb 2, 2012 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

This was not on the refs. This was a collapse by our team.

I could see if this was a one time thing

But collapsing down the stretch is not new for this team.

Howland says earlier this week it has been weeks since we practiced zone

which means we’re also not practicing offense against a zone and then we go out and look clueless against the zone. Shocking, ain’t it?

Screw his home town

Why doesn’t he play EVERY game as though he cares about his career, his pride, and his TEAM?! I can no longer support Ben Howland.

Tom Haverford

Would have officiated a better game

Down the stretch, the refs did everything they could to give the game to UW. It’s still no excuse for the meltdown at the end. I hate watching these type of games. Even with a ten point lead I had a sick feeling that we would let off the gas and lose…

Achilles asked who was nervous.

Really, we don’t make this stuff up.

As soon as the guy guarding Smith got four fouls...

…we stopped sending the ball in to Smith. Becuase I guess trying to foul out a Washington player would be rude.

There's probably gonna be some morons

Tooting the moral victory horn. Save it. This was a terrible loss.

Bye Howland

You inexcusably blew 2008 Final Four with NBA All-Star level talent on the team and have been riding on the early success far too long. Time to get a legit coach who competes year in and year out.

We had them on the ropes the whole time !!!!!!!!!

And then we just buckled under and GAVE THE GAME AWAY !!!!!!!!!

Jesus f * Christ !!!!!!!

with 10 point lead they went into zone and we looked clueless

and it appeared we were in “slow down” offense with way too much time left in the game.

We lost our aggression and that cost us. The game is 40 minutes, not 35.

Agree...the 3/4 full court press after made UW baskets took us out of synch.

Also, if Josh Smith did not have to be subbed every 3-4 minutes…and be left in to dominate an inferior interior defense, then we might have had more success going to the ‘well’ more! JS could have had 30+

This game is not on Josh in any way

he played much longer stretches and more minutes than usual. He was running down the court on D. I’ll bet he played far more minutes that any game this season.

We had terrible shooting from T. Wear, Lamb, Powell and most of the game Zeek,

Zeek played a lot of minutes, probably because Powell was sick. Jerime, at the end of the game made some stupid mistakes.

Smith was our player of the game.

I stated earlier that Josh was UCLA's POG...

I just could imagine a “really in-shape Josh” would be much more dominant, thus allowing longer stretches of time before he was winded…and maybe less frequent Howland TO’s. Yes, the offensive fouls and crappy mid-air desperation passes did us in!

We lost to a guy that has NOOOOOOO CLASS. God damn it

No, Daniel Fox, You got it wrong, for Christ sake.

It’s the way Howland lost games he NEVER, NEVER for one f **** moment should have lost that we are so f * pissed. UNDERSTAND ????

by Htse005 on Feb 2, 2012 8:27 PM PST reply actions

Disclaimer - Daniel Fox is not me.

I don’t think Coach Howland should have been coaching this game (or any game after the disasters early in the season. Firing Coach Howland mid season would have taken courage, and we know neither courage nor competence exists anywhere in Morgan Center. (I think it’s too early to decide whether our new football staff will cower at the sight of Chianti Dan.)

Coach Howland has lost the privilege of coaching teams with the four letters. I love the man, but I detest the coach.

What the f ****** is wrong with our team ?????

You had those god damn dogs by their balls already. Do you know that ?? It’s their TESTICLES you had under your feet already, okay ?

Why ? Why ? And god damn f ****** WHY ?

Lazeric Jones

Another bad night for him… sigh
The truth is he can tear up D2 and poor D1 school guards, but can’t play against any decently athletic team…
