UPDATE: UCLA Hockey Suspension Lifted; Crosstown Cup Game 5 vs. USC Set for Saturday

Bumped. We wanted make sure everyone saw this update. Many thanks to skycam for this brilliant leadership on this. Go Bruins (and Beat $C). - BN Eds.

Bruins fans, I am thrilled to report that the UCLA ice hockey club's suspension has been lifted by Club Sports, and its game against USC for the Crosstown Cup is once again on as scheduled. The official word came just after 4:00pm, before an appeal hearing with the Club Sports Executive Council was scheduled to occur.

While I don't have too many details yet of how the reversal happened, a few things are clear. First, this would not have been possible without a great show of support from the Bruin community. The fact that the decision was handed down before the hearing shows that your voices were heard loud and clear. So my thanks go out to all of Bruins Nation, as well as to those in the USC community who also chimed in with your support.

Star-divide

Second, the team will still face some sort of sanction for the paperwork infraction, most likely probation. I want to be clear that the team did not seek to dodge discipline for failing to follow the rules, only that the punishment fit the crime.

With all that said, it's time to focus on the task at hand - winning the Crosstown Cup on Trojan ice. The team could use as much support as possible in enemy territory, so I encourage every Bruin fan to make it to the rink to cheer on our team. The game is at 7:30pm, this Saturday, February 4, at Anaheim Ice, 300 W. Lincoln Ave., Anaheim, CA.

If more details become available, I'll try to update this post, and of course, I'll try to get a recap up postgame.

I hope to see you all there. Thanks once more for all of your support.

GO BRUINS - BEAT $C!

Great news, skycam!!

Really happy for you guys! You deserve all the credit for rallying support with your post here, and to silverlake for forwarding it on to BRO. I wish I could be there to cheer you on, but I have a squirt and a U8 to follow around south Denver rinks all weekend.

Now go out and puck up the trogans!

Great Job Bruins!

No go get ’em UCLA Hockey!

Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. ~ Vince Lombardi

We should not be surprised when reasonableness and good judgment prevail,

but it’s so rare when that happens with the current UCLA athletic administration. Before the BN and before the internet, the smug decision makers would have stuck their thumbs in the team’s collective eye, and done it in the safety of anonymity. Now, thanks to Sky, it didn’t happen. I’m so proud of my brothers and sisters in the Bruins Nation. Great job by all.

Now two more things need to happen. First, our team needs to take care of business against the trogans. Second, and I think equally as important, we need to find out the names of the persons who made the silly decision in the first place, and find out why people who think this way are allowed to be in positions of authority. (Then we need to get them removed, but I suspect that will only happen when Hercules shows up to clean the Augean Stable called Morgan Center.)

Way to go, all

Props to all:

To skycam, for bringing this to our attention.
To BN, for bringing this to the public’s attention.
To readers of BN, who let those within UCLA know that we cared about this issue.
To UCLA staffers, who righted the wrong in timely fashion.

BN adds to its sterling reputation of fighting on behalf of all Bruins. Nice going, people.

I received this a few minutes ago from jason zeck (jzeck@recreation.ucla.edu)

In response to a short note requesting the team be allowed to play against ’SC…

Supporters of UCLA Ice Hockey,

On behalf of the entire UCLA Ice Hockey team, the team officers would like to ask the students, fans, alumni, the university, and our opponents to read this letter in order to gain a better understanding of the circumstances regarding our pending sanctions:

An officer of a club sports team is not a position to be taken lightly. By accepting our roles as officers of UCLA Ice Hockey, we vowed to fulfill our obligations to ensure the completion of a safe, successful season. However, due to our own mistakes and actions, we failed as leaders and did not comply with several Club Sports policies. Our negligence caused the team to travel without university approval multiple times. This is a dangerous circumstance where we as leaders can be ultimately found to be at fault should an accident occur. Not only does this mistake violate university policies, it also puts our team at great risk. And for this we are truly sorry. We let down our team, fans, opponents, and ultimately our university which expects us to carry out our leadership duties as officers. If we had simply done our jobs and fulfilled our obligations, this situation should have never occurred.

We want to acknowledge that the club sports staff worked diligently providing over 50 hours of educational training and team specific meetings to help educate and train us as officers. In addition to these educational meetings, members of the Club Sports staff were always willing to individually meet with us and work to prevent future infractions from occurring. We felt these one-on-one meetings to be very informational and helped us make progress in fulfilling our obligations as officers. Thus, there is no excuse for our actions. Club Sports spent countless efforts trying to steer our club on the right path, but we failed to meet our responsibilities due to a lack of diligence and effort. It is for these reasons that we would like to thank Club Sports for all of its help, and we would like to offer our sincerest apologies for failing to demonstrate adequate leadership.

We would like to take this moment to also apologize to our two opponents affected by our actions: the LMU and USC ice hockey teams. Multiple infractions at the beginning of the academic year had caused us to previously forfeit a game this season to LMU due to a team suspension. We were given permission to play them this week while on suspension because they did not deserve to be penalized twice. And we are also sorry that our mistakes directly affected our biggest rival, USC. Our actions as officers put us in the unenviable position of possibly having to forfeit the biggest game of the season. We know that USC is as excited as us to participate in the game, and our mistakes nearly took their opportunity to play Game 5 in front of their home fans. Again, our administrative mistakes led to this predicament, and we apologize for putting both teams in difficult circumstances.

The club sports program has taught us more than just competing and winning. It’s about developing us as responsible leaders. As student leaders at UCLA, with the legacy of Coach Wooden, who insisted upon values such as integrity and responsibility from UCLA athletes, we are taking 100% responsibility and accountability for our actions. We apologize to the students who serve on the Club Sports council, the numerous other club officers who do fulfill their responsibilities, the UCLA Recreation department, the university, the alumni, our fans and our opponents for putting ourselves in the position.

UCLA Hockey would also like to apologize to all others affected by this situation, as we know that the implications of our actions were far reaching and severely detrimental. We have accepted several administrative and leadership sanctions which are effective immediately but will allow us to complete the remainder of our season. The entire team is committed to serving out our administrative sanctions with integrity and excellence. We understand that being allowed to compete wearing the UCLA letters on our jersey is a privilege and we are very appreciative of being allowed to compete in our games this weekend against LMU and USC. We could not be prouder to represent UCLA on the ice, and we look forward to finishing our season the way we set out to do. Go Bruins!

Sincerely,
Michael Carder, President
Mark Yost, Vice-President

Well done guys

Way to take responsibility. Everyone will be better off going forward coming out of this situation. Hope it all works out and let’s get a win!

by Nestor on Feb 3, 2012 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

No kidding

Now, THAT’S how to take responsibility. No equivocating. No deflecting. No conditions. Just a straight-up “we screwed up; we’re sorry.”

This letter begins by explaining the reasons why the rules exist. The explanation makes the rules sound reasonable and the sanctions understandable. But, the letter doesn’t stop there. The responsibility-taking and mea culpas follow.

How many times have you seen an “apology” start with the first component and either dance around or omit the second component completely? Me, too.

To Whomever Owes Someone an Apology: Please see this letter from Messrs. Carder and Yost for reference.

These guys have no future in the NFL

This is an apology without any qualifications. Where is the “If I caused any harm, which I didn’t, from my actions, which I didn’t actually do….” Good job, fellas.

Still, I question the attitude of the guys in charge who chose unreasonableness taken to an absurd level rather than a level-headed approach. Mr. Gilbert put it this way, in the Mikado: “My object all sublime, I shall achieve in time, to let the punishment fit the crime, the punishment fit the crime.” That didn’t happen until Bruins rose up against injustice.

by Fox 71 on Feb 3, 2012 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

Since club hockey has to travel just to practice, why did UCLA have a problem with this?

“However, due to our own mistakes and actions, we failed as leaders and did not comply with several Club Sports policies. Our negligence caused the team to travel without university approval multiple times.”

These guys need a note from home before they can practice? Is something going on here below the surface? These violations seem chickensh*t to me.

As my old boss used to say,

If they’re not chickensh*t, they sure have their henhouse ways.
