Dear Chancellor Block,
As a Bruin, I am absolutely disgusted by the revelations made by the Sports Illustrated article released this week. The lack of leadership and control demonstrated by Coach Howland and the poor attitude and actions displayed by some of his players are very appalling. We are not just any school. We are UCLA. We are the leaders and we are suppose to set the standard for everyone else. We have a legacy to protect. I'm pretty confident Coach Wooden would not approve of the things going on within our program right now.
I appreciate all that Coach Howland has done for UCLA. His early success of three straight trips to the Final Four is very commendable. Most Bruins, including myself, are very appreciative of that. However, that kind of success still does not give a coach the license to run a program the way it has been these past few years. It makes me sick to my stomach to read that Coach Howland would allow a player to intentionally harm another player physically. This lack of control and oversight on the part of Coach Howland is absolutely and unequivocally unacceptable. As the leader of this university, I hope you share this sentiment as well.
Athletic Director Guerrero may not have been implicated directly in the SI article, but his lack of leadership as the person in charge of the entire athletic department is clearly evident. With players leaving UCLA in droves, more so than other programs, that should have been a flag for Guerrero to monitor our basketball program more closely. Has Guerrero been asleep at the wheel this entire time? If not, why were no actions taken? Guerrero's comment this afternoon is very appalling: "The article certainly raised some issues, but we're aware of many issues as well." Guerrero has been aware of other issues within the program but still took no action? The timeline of these events go back to 2008. That's three years of inaction on the part of our athletic director.
As a proud Bruin alumnus, donor, and football season ticket holder, I ask that you take the appropriate action and remove Dan Guerrero and Ben Howland from their current positions. If this can be done by the end of the school year, I pledge to donate at least $500 to the Wooden Athletic Fund by December 31, 2012. I have donated $100 each of the last two years to the Wooden Athletic Fund and your staffers can verify this. I have no problem donating more money if the right people are running the show. Cheers to better days ahead.
