UCLA at WSU Game Thread: Going for a Road Win
UCLA Bruins at Washington St. Cougars, Feb 4, 2012 2:00 PM PST
UCLA has won 5 in a row on the road against Washington State but has not won a road game outside of Southern California this year. One streak will be broken tonight. The other news is Travis Wear is unlikely to play, which means more minutes for under-used Anthony Stover and little-used Brendan Lane.
The Cougars' preview is here. The official UCLA preview is here and game tracker is here. Another downside of a less than stellar year is this game is only carried on the Root Network (formerly Fox Sports NW) and not available locally. Don McLean and Chris Roberts will be doing the game on radio.
Go Bruins.

The good news about no TV means we don't have to make up any excuses for not watching.
In fact, they might not even play. The players could go grab some pizza and just phone in a score and some stats.
This game is a preview
Of the forthcoming NIT tournament. Here’s to Howland leading us to an NIT banner.

That picture of Lane getting blown by
illustrates exactly why he doesn’t get more PT
No, we're getting some weak-ass...
…lame shit about some limp dick USA basketball youth tournament in Belgrade.
Seriously. Who gives a f**k about this?!
F**k you Comcast and f**k you FSN.
Root Sports might be a more half-ass set-up...
…than Versus and that’s saying a lot.
This network isn’t even JV level. It’s walk-on freshman team level.
What kind of programming decision is that?
Do they really think they get more viewers this way?
I can understand if they didn’t want to send a camera crew — but, apparently, there is one covering the game.
sjh
But, then it's not on
Instead of the listed game, we are getting something about the world games.
Have we slipped so low that we are being replaced by a reality show?
sjh
Is there a God in heaven protecting us from ourselves?
Says so here, too. But there’s something about the world university games on.
sjh
The last was in and out
I think he will be ok

Body language from the Bruins is so poor
weak half-assed passing and everyone is slow moving around the court
Have the players lost faith in Howland?
In themselves
it’s not all on Howland all the time.
When they are on the floor, they have to play to their best.
sjh
Stover has been completely ineffective today, not defending the paint, not getting blocks, rebounds, nothing
Our players are not very good.
Amazing to me that the other teams seem to be so much more talented than we are.
sjh
I'm trying to think of anyone that belongs on an NBA roster
The only one I can think of is Joshua Smith, but only if he loses 50+ lbs. (no exaggeration). It’s really very sad, especially considering how astonishingly pathetic the entire Pac-12 conference is top-to-bottom. I really can’t remember the last time every single team ranged from mediocre to extremely pathetic. We’re somewhere between bad and very bad.
Powell could not get enough elevation to dunk the ball, and misses the layup
at least, I think that was Powell, I still think his flu is bothering him
ZEEEK!!!!!
major play by zeek. steal, dunk and 1
moral victorys
they seem harder and harder to come by
what is our FT % this year?
seems lower than last year or is it just me?
not sure I'll be back for the 2nd half.
It’s a BEAUTIFUL day in Seattle. Started cold and clear around freezing, but bright sunny day about 60 now. We get very few days like this in February.
GO BRUINS!
I feel the same way -- a beautiful day in Bodega Bay
but, I’m a sucker and can’t not watch. It’s an illness.
sjh
lol i hear that
i was up there over xmas and one of the few days it was sunny EVERYONE was out at the park
Coug Mark Ryien on the floor at 1/2 time talkin about his Cancer Foundation. Nice.
U-C-L-A Fight, Fight, Fight! Go Bruins! Go Lakers! Go Dodgers! Go Angels!
Ben Howland empties my passion bucket for UCLA Basketball, and I resent it.
i'm gonna get some stuff for the superbowl
try to be back for the end…
I am watching this dumpster fire
While doing chores …. I am running out of chores to do … I need something else to keep my mind on while watching our garbage team.
Vacuuming is done, grocery shopping done
Laundry has been folded. Hmm … may be we brainstorm about dinner.
The one cool thing about Howland’s basketball sucking &s is that because we do all chores during hoops game on Saturday, we have lot of extra time to chill out on Sundays.
Maybe start going through the closets and look for clothes
You haven’t worn in the past year and set it aside for donation.
You two crack me up
If football and basketball never revive themselves, we can change this to the Bruins Housekeeping blog
We are missing T Wear
I love Stover, but he’s not having a good game. Totally ineffective on O and no D rebounds or blocks.
sjh
They are shooting 92% at line and we are 62%
We are not good enough to shoot that poorly when given charity shots.
sjh
I don't think I have ever seen a U.C.L.A. team shoot a higher %...
…from the line than its opponent.

missed fts
have been the difference in scores for many games
oh my god
this is really a competition they are having for the WSU students/audience
throwing newspapers into a box.
Wears still lack proper shot block technique
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
I have a question for all of you ...
why do I torture myself by watching this?
What’s wrong with me?
(That’s two questions)
Like me, you have no life
I assume
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
Your second question answers the first.
When you find out what’s wrong with you, you’ll discover why you enjoy the torture.
As a SF Giants fan, I am accustomed to torture. But we have spectacular pitching, and cute infielders.
I'm still annoyed they pushed out Neukom.
Mr. Bowtie really wanted to improve the team, and seems like he wanted to spend the money to do so, and some of the other owners didn’t seem happy with opening their wallets.
(that is my theory.)
+1
Agree 100%. It’s like ownership didn’t want the pressure to meet the fans’ expectation of fielding a competitive team year-in and year-out, so they dumped Neukom & came up with the dreaded “rainy day” fund excuse.

Watching this garbage feels watching Lavin's last team
And this is the second time in three seasons we have been feeling this way.
Yet, we have to read illogical defense of Howland from people who do not watch these games.
Ouch! Nestor that really does mean we all need serious counselling or lots of alcohol!
Just the mention of the" Lav"(atory) makes me ill.
You just have to LOL at people...
…who come to Ben’s defense but then openly admit they haven’t been watching how shitty we are.
Typically fairweather fans: “oh, UCLA isn’t in the Final Four this year? Oh, I’ll watch next year I suppose”
It looked like to me that the WSU player just tripped and fell down
Stover gets called for the foul and his astounded
Wait, what do you mean?
I had to read in the comment threads here last from Howlers how “pretty” our offense was after we beat up basketball powerhouses aka Utah and CU at home.
Motum with the nastiest looking three
Zero arc, and clanged it off the back iron.
Part of me wonders if watching the WNBA would be more entertaining.
Yes, it’s THAT bad.
This season was lost in December
with RN psycho meltdown and JS showing up having enough weight for two point guards.
Note to CBH
It is good to hav e a zone option
by DCBruins on Feb 4, 2012 3:38 PM PST via mobile reply actions
JS dropped a rebound - huh.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
It has keyed the "comeback"
Imagine if we practiced it
by DCBruins on Feb 4, 2012 3:43 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
regardless of how this game ends, I'm looking forward to another $C loss at UW.
Pathetic that that’s all we have to look forward to…..
damn Arizona swept the Bay Area wow

Please stay zone
CBH don’t blow this

Imagine if Smith had shown up in game shape instead 50# overweight....
I think after last summer the trainers will be in close contact with him over the summer. At least I hope so.
it would be silly to think
He can play pro ball in the US at this point. Plus, from what I’ve observed, he likes being a college student. Maybe he’s excited to play in the new Pauley!!!
More like excited...
…for the new concession stands at Pauley.
Boy needs to get himself into serious shape if he wants to have a legitimate NBA career and not be known as Tractor Traylor II.
It would be silly, but NBA teams bite all the time...
You can’t teach size, and if nothing else, Smith has size, in abundance.
Do not post links to illegal online streams
Seriously people. First, it’s illegal (or does no one watch the news and see the Dept. of Justice just seized a bunch of these pirate stream websites?). Second, and more importantly, posting them here makes BN (and those of us running it) liable to being shut-down.
So, seriously, knock it off.
Repeat offenders will be banned.
maybe you shouldn't have given the link to me
on thursday I feel asleep at half and woke up with us up by ten only to see us die—-a death of slowdown
they score 3 out of the time out
and we turn it over.
OK, I admit it. I've been stupid enough to follow the score
This is about where things were last game. I think we’re doomed.
c'mon bruins hold it together
zeke needs to be the floor general out there and keep things under control…
Just now dropping in
If it goes south here, you can blame me.

Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
It's that, the tweet, the rn connection, the lack of dedication. Frustrating to watch.
Hail to the Hills of Westwood.
why doesn't every team full court press us?
by Objection Penguin on Feb 4, 2012 4:02 PM PST reply actions
That's pretty good strategy, when you think about it.
Call a time out. Set a play. Get an off-the-ball offensive foul and not only lose the ball, but lose your high scorer. Nice job, guys.
dmac is as disgusted by this team
as we are

I used to be able to trust Zeek with FT's in the final minutes, now I don't know who to trust anymore.
I don’t believe in any of our guards
they aren't going away easy
wsu score 3, 12 seconds left up 4
It's amazing how good we make every team look down the stretch
No matter how bad they are.
yes it was
we should have clobbered this team. at least we switched up to the zone. mixing it up is good…
63 - 60
get the split. CBH should have used the zone in seattle. we would have swept the washington schools if he just used his brain sometimes… sheesh…
Stress
I feel like my blood pressure has sky rocketed throughout this game, so stressful to watch UCLA play.
You can thank waters and Fox and me for closing that out
(whew)
greg in denver, U.C.L.A. guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Anyone old enough to remember Lew Alcindor scoring 61 pts against WSU?
Sure wish we had a dominant player again.
remarkably painful to watch
Today I learned that we miss T Wear.
Ugly ugly
but a win’s a win. I’ve given up all hope, but I’m just a happier person when UCLA wins. Now gonna go enjoy this beautiful winter weather for a bit before catching a movie and having a good Saturday.
Everyone else enjoy their Saturdays as well. Be safe. Live long and prosper.

Okay Bruins!
Go outside and enjoy the rest of the afternoon in sunny Seattle, Bodega Bay, and here in SJ.
Twitter DailyBruinSports
“UCLA’s best road win of the season.”
Cheeky.
Ugly win..
At least we won on the road outside of Southern California.. but the Bruins are still a NIT team (at best) and CBH and DG still need to go.
Go Bruins!
you know negative comments are easy to make.
especially when you will not be held accountable FOREVER for making them but if what you want to occurs occurs it is forever
Signature Victory
With that statement win, we are now tied for 6 seed in the Pac-12 tourney, thanks to Stanford loss. Next stop final 4.
