VIDEO Highlights: National Signing Day Event at UCLA, Part 3

Well, the 2011-2012 football season is officially over. Hope all your Super Bowl bets paid off. If not, there's always next year.

We've got a long time before seeing the new edition of Bruins football. Thanks to Jim Mora and staff, we do have some positive things to look forward to, given the results of national signing day.

Friday, Patroclus' signing day wrap-up focused on defense. This final video (ICYMI here is Part 1 and Part 2) highlight installment of UCLA's signing day event complements that story with UCLA's defensive coaches introducing the 2012 defensive additions.

Star-divide

Defensive Coordinator Lou Spanos spoke briefly before having Demetrice Martin introduce the defensive backs. It was getting late, but coach Martin managed to fire up the crowd. He went on to introduce the defensive backs, Marcus Rios, Taylor Lagace, Ishmail Adams, Kenny Orjioke, Justin Combs, and Randall Goforth. Quotable: "Tips and overthrows - gotta get those!"

Jeff Ulbrich told us, "Want a new attitude around here? - You got it!" He introduced line backers Jeremy Castro, Aaron Porter, Nate Iese, and kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn.

Angus McClure introduced Defensive linemen Eli Ankou and all-everything Ellis McCarthy. You really need to see the last highlight clip for McCarthy. Can't wait to see him in Bruin Blue and Gold!

This concludes the National Signing Day event at UCLA. We've seen this opening act before. Lots of energy, lots of promise. Let's hope this time the show plays out a little differently.

Go Bruins!

Good energy and chemistry

Jon Gold mentioned how this staff is all of similar age and style, as compared to the previous staff. Bodes well. Hard to be patient.

Win the Pac, party at Daddy Combs...

or is that Diddy.

Now I know why they all committed.

Coach Spanos is definitely not comfortable

with an audience of other than his own guys. He has the look and reserved demeanor of an assassin. I like that for our DC.

Thanks for the Vids Tele.

Really enjoyed them. Nice to be able to see the personalities of the coaches. Feel the energy!

As a guy who has played LB in college, Ulbrich has the right attitude.

Big boost of confidence for me with regards to Ulbrich, Martin and (most importantly) McClure. He talks like a guy who knows what he’s doing with a defensive line.

Saving it for my 3-4 defense preview, but I would not be shocked to see Porter supplant Larimore within the first couple weeks of the season as the true Mike. That kid is absolutely the real deal from what I have seen of his film. I don’t watch a ton of high school highlight tapes because I’m not over the top with recruiting. But I’ve looked at Porter’s and Castro’s enough to make this call. They’ll both be playing this year. Probably more than Kendricks did last season.

Were you not pointing out

how Larimore was lost more often than not last year? If Porter catches on quick, he’ll definitely play. But in a 3-4, could they both be playing MLB?

And I agree with you about Ulbrich. The players are gonna go hard for that guy. He scares me a little bit…I like that!

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

That would be me.

Larimore has all the tools in the world, he may have just been poorly coached.

And, yeah, they could both be playing at the same time. But in a 3-4, one MLB is the guy who the entire defense runs through (with regard to calls, audibles, etc.). That’s what I could see Porter taking from Larimore. Too early to tell though.

"We've seen this opening act before"...

With a 50-0 for an encore!!!

Nothing but lip sevice so far! Thanks for the post it was enjoyable. Fool me once…fool me twice…third time???

Of course

It’s all about the results on the field.

However, what I do like is that this is Coach Mora’s staff, one that he put together because he had a plan. That part at least makes it different than the previous regime which seemed like a collection of parts rather than a united front, with some of those parts having been pushed on Neuheisel. Neu had no leverage when he came on, which is another reason why Chianti Dan brought him on: someone on whom he could have a lot of influence (because he was doing him a favor, essentially), and who came on the cheap.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Hope you're right T-10...

I am so solidly agnostic at this point. Not pessimistic or gung ho! Your point regarding “parts having been pushed on Neuheisel” is well taken.

13 years of futililty

would make anyone agnostic. The fact is, more UCLA fans should have the same perspective as you. Mora is not the disaster that we feared it would be, but he hasn’t shown anything on the field yet. The most sensible position is yours.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Great video

Hope Coach Martin can instill that energy and enthusiasm into the secondary.

Savvy of Coach Martin to talk about DB’s pressing receivers and how “we’re gonna see more of that around here.” Haha, this guy knows the frustrations of Bruins fans with last year’s D, and obviously these guys have done their homework on last year’s D.

Spanos was surprisingly uncomfortable, and I kind of see why we hadn’t heard much from him… he’ll have to develop some press rapport as the year goes on.

Ulrich is awesome. Ooozes swagger.

Also sounds like Kai Forbath is on his way out…

Well

it’s interesting that our last 3 kickers have names that start with K…

Assassins, like Coach Spanos

do not enjoy the spotlight. They prefer to let their body of work speak for them.

by 4everBruin on Feb 6, 2012 1:49 PM PST reply actions

I didn't think Spanos was that uncomfortable.

He didn’t have any recruits to talk about, kind of an awkward situation in general.
