Nebraska Confirms; Spoke With Howland About Coaching Job

Earlier this month, we linked to a rumor circulating about Nebraska "courting" Howland following SI's expose of his dumpster fire program falling apart. A couple of days ago, Omaha.com confirmed that a conversation regarding the Husker's coaching vacancy did take place.

(Nebraska Athletic Director) Boehm confirmed that he spoke to UCLA coach Ben Howland about the "generalities" of the job, but wouldn't confirm if he gauged Howland's interest. Boehm was at Pittsburgh when the Panthers hired Howland, believed to be the Huskers' top target in the search.

"Ben and I are very good friends," Boehm said. "We talked about a lot of things. We talked about his situation. We talked about other coaches that he recommended."

Howland's take on Nebraska to Boehm? Recruiting was key, and NU had the facilities in place to land good players.

"He did say this: 'The stars are aligned at Nebraska,'" Boehm said. "The stars aligned, and you have a mortar that is being built and there's a commitment in place.'"

While it sounds he spoke with them in more of an advisory role, there were enough generalities and deflections used that indicate that Howland was also a target of their search.
