Bumped. $750K bonus for 0-50 and missing the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years. And that's just scratching the surface of Chianti Dan's boondoggle at UCLA. Heckuva job Chancellor Block. - BN Eds.
What's wrong with a "750,000 retention bonus?!"
As if Dan Guerrero's looting of UCLA did not already surprise you, I came across this amendment to Dan Guerrero's contract yesterday. Here is a link to the contract (PDF). In the contract, Dan Guerrero was given a retention bonus of $150,000 per year for a 5 year period up until March 31, 2013:
"Retention Bonus: Provides for a retention bonus of $750,000 payable at the end of the fifth year of contract if Director Guerrero completes the five full years of service of contract. None of this bonus will vest on an interim basis, unless Director Guerrero is terminated without cause by the University, in which case it will vest at the rate of $150,000 per year of his service as Director."

This means come March 31, 2013, UCLA will be on the hook to pay Dan Guerrero another $750,000. This is disturbing yet not very surprising to me considering Dan Guerrero has been raising bus fares and student ticket prices for students throughout his tenure. You would think the University would allocate that $150,000 towards transportation fees for students to get to games at the Rose Bowl instead of charging them a fee students at other universities do not have to worry about.
Something to take note of is that it does not look like UCLA has re-upped Guerrero past March 31, 2013. This could be very significant for UCLA fans in getting him out of Westwood after the upcoming football and basketball seasons. I recently spoke with some people at UCLA who relayed that Chancellor Block was not prepared to run a University like UCLA and does not like public scrutiny at all. UCLA fans must not allow Chancellor Block to reward Dan Guerrero's incompetence over the past decade once again.
We must continue to point out all the errors Guerrero has made and his even more embarrassing salary and bonuses, including his Italian Chianti trip, to Chancellor Block and the media. UCLA's Tom Hansen must be shown the door. Imagine what a Larry Scott could do for us at UCLA.
