Josh Smith's Conditioning Still a Huge Question Mark Per Howland

Apparently Josh Smith is still not in shape per Ben Howland:

Howland was asked how Josh Smith has been coming along and said Smith has had a couple good practices. Howland then was asked if Smith has continued to get in better shape. Howland responded with the following:

"I think he's got a long way to go where we want him to ideally be. We're less than two months from opening up our regular practice so there's a lot of work to be done between now and then. But I think this trip will be good and a barometer to where he is in his conditioning and where he needs to be because he's going to play a lot."

That was from Miguel Melendez who followed up with this:

I saw Smith but I can't tell whether he's lost any weight just based on the fact I've never covered this team. I asked a seasoned beat writer and he thought Smith actually put on some weight since the last time he saw Smith.

Ouch.

So we are not going to have Shabbazz and Tony Parker for the China trip. This will potentially negatively impact one of the main purposes for this China trip - giving a team with a completely new core of talented recruits time to gel early. Now one of main X factors for this season - Smith's conditioning - is being called into question by the head coach.

Kind of an ominous start for Ben, who needs to get it done - dominating run to the Pac-12 championship, a top-2 seed in the Western region and a run to (at least) the Final-4 - this season.

GO BRUINS.
