Our #5 men's volleyball team fought back to defeat #10 Ohio State on the second day of the Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu. The set scores were 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13. The Bruins' attack was led by Dane Worley with 19 kills. Spencer Rowe and Kene Izuchukwu chipped in with 13 kills apiece. Libero Evan Mottram once again led the team in digs with 11, and RS junior Connor Bannan contributed 51 assists. The box score is here, courtesy of the Ohio State athletics website (and oddly not currently available at the UCLA athletics website--Guerrero, you're doing a heck of a job!)
The Bruins, now 5-1, have opened with six consecutive five set matches, losing only to #1 UCI along the way. Coach John Speraw continues to evaluate his deep squad, experimenting with different combinations and giving court time to players like Jonathan Bridgeman and Kendall Partie who've had little playing time so far this season. The Bruins leading hitter, junior Robart Page, did not play, nor did outside hitter Gonzalo Quirago who is our third leading attacker in kills per set. Coach Speraw also changed his setter, leaving freshman Steve O'Dell on the bench after playing all five sets in the previous match.
The Bruins close out the tournament with a match against the hosts tonight at 9 PM PST. GO BRUINS!
