On Thursday, Jamaal Wilkes will have his UCLA #52 jersey retired, a well deserved honor. On January 30, Reggie Miller will have his #31 UCLA jersey retired. Why? Because he made the basketball Hall of Fame??? But that was based on his accomplishments in the NBA. What did he do at UCLA besides take a lot of shots and score a lot of points?
Reggie Miller was never an All-American at UCLA. Reggie Miller led UCLA to exactly one NCAA tournament victory in his four years. Retiring Miller's jersey is an insult to all the great Bruin All-Americans who helped UCLA win multiple national championships and have yet to have this honor, players like Keith Erickson, Lucius Allen, Mike Warren, Curtis Rowe, Henry Bibby and Dave Meyers. This sets a terrible precedent.
What if one-year Bruins like Kevin Love or Shabazz Muhammed make the Hall of Fame based on their NBA careers some day? How about Russell Westbrook, whose UCLA achievements were exceeded by a hundred or so other Bruin players? Should they have their UCLA jerseys retired? Of course not.
Now that dimwit who hosts the UCLA postgame radio show has been all over this issue, but only to promote his buddy, Don MacLean for this honor. Does MacLean deserve it? Certainly more than Miller. Yes, this is just another bonehead move by the athletic department and those who run it.
