This Bleacher Report article talks about the ten best student sections in the country:
While games are indeed won and lost on the field, what happens in the stands has a huge impact. Student sections are one of the reasons why college football is the best sport in the world.
And like football teams, some are just better than others.
While some student sections struggle with the basics of wearing the school colors, others have made the act of cheering for their team an art form.
My question is, will we ever get on this list, or even get a whiff of it? As things stand now, I'd say we would be a prime contender for "10 lamest student sections in the country". Even for the game against NMSU, my MBA alumni remarked how pathetic the crowd was for a top-15 ranked CFB team. The crowd as a whole was whatever the opposite of "electric" is (FYI, I was in section 16L, where I recall somebody here mentioned they got yelled at for cheering and standing). I didn't really have anything to retort with to my classmates besides "the students are just moving in this weekend for school."
I've mentioned before ways to simplify the incredibly difficult to coordinate 8-clap, and we've discussed here and there ways we might get more students involved and getting out to the Rose Bowl. At this juncture, I have accepted that an on-campus stadium will never happen, especially under the current buffoon in charge of the Athletics Department, so we will have to make do with the Rose Bowl.
So what do you think, Bruins? I know we have a passionate bunch here on BN, but we would probably fill up 1 section at the most. It'd be the rowdiest section I'm sure, and we would make our team proud, but it is most definitely a small minority, and we still wouldn't have many coordinated, sustainable cheers that we could all do together.
Should I adjust my expectations of an "LA" crowd, and a student body that has never been guided or will never bother to do things like Texas A&M does, a full-on rehearsal the night before on how to cheer? Or is this fixable? I for one say, that if I were in charge of the Athletics Department, I would get this fixed ASAP, and it wouldn't be that difficult. We are accustomed to being the best at UCLA in every field we participate in. Shouldn't this count as one of them?
