Just thought I'd throw my two cents out there. Seeing as it is crystal clear now that none of the so-called "first tier" coaches are realistic (Donovan and Pitino are not coming, sorry), I'd like to see Jay Wright get more consideration and at least a phone call.
He's a good coach who has had a really solid run of success at Villanova. What I think benefits us is that he has that track record of being (fairly) steady. Granted the last couple years not so much, but his program wasn't a dumpster fire like Howland's was. His teams play solid defense (remember when they tore us apart a few years ago?) and offense (much better than Howand's style), so it would be a nice brand of ball that I would think would put people in the (empty) seats inside Pauley.
The guy also seems like he has a bit of a swagger to him and I think it would resonate well with recruiting locally; he could be one of those coaches who could recruit at a barber shop (I mean he recruits well in Philly so he's gotta do it well in LA, right?), and also at nice restaurants down in Orange County. All-in-all I think Coach Wright would be a good hire that can give us the consistency of competing for the PAC-12 crown every year, and have us as a constant presence in the tournament come March with some deeps runs to the Sweet-16 or better every other year.
Maybe all he has been missing is to take a step-up in the program ladder. With the resources he would be disposed to at UCLA, I think he could definitely take a team of his style of recruits to the mountain top. But at any rate, I know I'd much rather see him roam the sidelines at Pauley than any NBA coach option, or the pathetic mentions of coaches like Romar, Gottfried, etc.
