An Interesting Theory: Could Adidas Be Responsible For Alford Apology?

Is it possible that Adidas is the reason that Coach Steve Alford issued an apology on Thursday?

It's a distinct possibility.

"How is that even remotely possible, JB?" you ask.

Follow along and I'll show you.

According an AP story posted on Yahoo!:

Reebok has ended its relationship with Rick Ross following heavy criticism of lyrics by the rapper considered by some to be pro-rape.

The sneaker brand said in a statement Thursday that "Reebok holds our partners to a high standard and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so."

The article continues:

Ross has appeared in a commercial for the Reebok Classic sneakers. The company says it does not believe that the Grammy-nominated rapper "condones sexual assault," but the company is not happy with how he has handled the situation.

"We are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse," the statement read. "At this time, it is in everyone's best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross."

"So what does all this have to do with Coach Steve Alford?" you ask, getting slightly impatient waiting to understand the connection.

Well, you will recall that Reebok was purchased by Adidas in 2006.

As such, it is quite possible that Adidas said the same thing to Guerrero and company. I mean, if you read the last quote above you could basically substitute Adidas for Reebok and Steve Alford for Rick Ross.

I can almost see an attorney at Adidas/Reebok saying that, if your're going to drop Rick Ross for this stuff, you need to deal with the situation with the new head basketball coach at UCLA in order to keep us from getting sued by Ross.

On Thursday afternoon, gbruin concluded that there must be some pretty powerful force, other than the Daily Bruin, causing the Athletic Deparment to issue an apology today. Adidas may just be that powerful force.

Can you imagine what the backlash will be if it turns out that Adidas pushed for the apology?

For now, we will have to wait and see. It will probably take about 24 days before we know for certain.
