Bruins are going to take on the winner of the Cal Poly and San Diego game this evening at 6 pm PST. At the time I am blogging this San Diego is up by a score of 3-2 at the bottom of the fourth. So I am going to go ahead and up an open thread now, not just to track our game this evening, but to keep tabs on scores around the country (via ESPN).
UCLA will have the luxury in the winner's bracket of using our 3rd starter against our opponent's 4th starter. Just for curiosity, I looked at the median score for the Bruins and each of our potential Sunday night opponents in this situation. The results were not as favorable as I expected. I guess we will have to go out and win this on the field, instead of with calculators.
Here are the numbers-
UCLA batting against team's 4th starter (midweek games)- median runs scored 5
UCLA pitching using team's 3rd starter (Sunday games)- median runs allowed 4
USD batting against team's 3rd starter- median runs scored 6.5
USD pitching using team's 4th starter- median runs allowed 5.5
Cal Poly batting against team's 3rd starter- median runs scored 5
Cal Poly pitching using team's 4th starter- median runs allowed 3
The most encouraging number is the 5 runs scored on average by UCLA in mid-week games. This is higher than the average for Friday or Saturday nights, when the Bruins struggle against the opponents' front line pitchers.
However, UCLA's bats have gone cold in recent games against 4th starters- UCLA has only scored more than 2 runs against a midweek opponent 1 time in the last 5 midweek games. Here are the scores of the last 5 games- 11-1 loss to Long Beach, 8-1 win over Irvine, 4-1 loss to Northridge, 5-2 loss at Fullerton, 2-1 win over UCSB.
We definitely need to pick it up against whoever we face tonight.
Sounds right to us.
First pitch is scheduled for approximately 6pm Pacific time. Live stats will be available as usual via Gametracker, and an audio broadcast is available here via the official site. Tonight's game will not be televised, but ESPN will be streaming the game online through ESPN3.com.
This is your open thread for tonight's game and also for NCAA action around the country.
