Folks, thanks to few donations over the weekend we are now up to $4,625.00 - less than $2,000 away from the goal of $6,500. We are getting there. If you haven't done so, please DONATE. GO BRUINS.
As I cheered on our beloved Bruins at the House that Wooden Built on Thursday, I got to thinking about the current status of our men's basketball team. As I looked to the left and right of me in my section of "UCLA seats", all I saw were folks dressed up in their ugly red shirts cheering on their #1 ranked Mildcats of Arizona. Here they were, in our house and in our section cheering on their team. What is wrong with this picture?
While we expect UCLA to compete for national championships in all sports, there is something uniquely different with the men's basketball team. I do not, and I will never believe we are simply a "basketball school". We are more than just basketball. However, the identity of UCLA's athletic greatness is deservedly attached to the greatest Coach of all time, John R. Wooden. In a way, I feel like our men's basketball team can be seen as a barometer for the overall health of the athletic department and the leadership behind it. In other words, if Coach's team is not playing to the standards on and off the court he set during his time, then I feel a change needs to be made immediately. After seeing a top point guard commit to the cheaters across town, the sparse attendance in Pauley (which is a clear referendum of how our alumni and fans view DG's failings thus far), the botched hiring process that brought a man of no integrity with a huge contract and ridiculous buyout, and seeing other top recruits flee Los Angeles to play in the desert in Arizona; it has become obvious that things will get worse before they get better on the hard court and everywhere else in Westwood.
While I'm happy to see new hope in football, a championship baseball team, and a women's title in women's soccer, that isn't the entire picture. It's truly important to remember that our current buffon of a leader, Danny Boy, is the same person that publicly trashed UCLA hoops, continues to lower expectations for our teams, the ridiculous buyout for Alford that he lied about, and he called us as being part of the "irrational fan base". This is the same "leader" that wanted to take away courtside seating for the students and and charge these same students a fee to take a bus to the Rose Bowl for one of more important games of the season.
Change is needed now. Change starts at the top. We need to get this message out to the masses. Please do your part to get this billboard up asap.
