Men's Volleyball - UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational Open Thread

The Bruins open the 2014 season today at the UCSB Invitational. The format for the tournament has changed this year with pool play matches restricted to a 3 set format so that the matches are classified as exhibition games. This allows teams to experiment with different lineups without the wins and losses from pool play counting in each team's record. However, the standings from pool play will be used to rank teams for cross-over play between the pools on the second day of the tournament, and those matches will be NCAA-sanctioned best-of-five set matches that will contribute to each team's regular season win-loss totals.

The pool the Bruins have been placed in includes IPFW, UC San Diego, Cal State Northridge, and Long Beach State. I expect that Coach Speraw will experiment quite a bit with his lineups during pool play and will give most, if not all, of his outstanding freshman class a chance to play.

Go BRUINS!

UPDATE - The Bruins will play #5 Stanford in the seventh-place match today starting at 12:30 PM.
